The use of lean software development methodology and business model experimentation has become popular in software companies in recent years. business model experimentation is used to validate assumptions made on a product from real customers before the actual product is created. A minimum viable product is used to test the business model by gathering and measuring customer feedback. However, in many cases creating a minimum viable product requires the development team to take shortcuts and workarounds in the product. This phenomenon in software development is called 'technical debt', where companies trade long-term software quality to short-term gain in time-to-market. We investigated four software companies and conducted nine interviews to understand the relationship between business model experimentation and technical debt. The goal was to study how business model experimentation is affecting to technical debt. The results showed that business model experimentation has a clear relationship to technical debt.

Data warehouses (DW) and OLAP systems are technologies allowing the on-line analysis of huge volume of data according to decision-makers' needs. Designing DW involves taking into account functional requirements and data sources (mixed design methodology) [1]. But, for complex applications, existing automatic design methodologies seem inefficient. In some cases, decision-makers need querying, as a dimension, data which have been defined as facts by actual automatic mixed approachs. Therefore, in this paper, we offer a new mixed refinement methodology relevant to constellation multidimensional schema. The proposed methodolgy allows to decision-makers to enrich a dimension with factual data. In order to validate our theoretical proposals, we have implemented an enrichment tool and we have tested it on a real case study from bird biodiversity.

For decision making in a community, a set of alternatives needs to be identified. The set of alternatives should be consistent with recognition in a community (Social context). In this study, we define "social context" as typical wording in community. Such wording appears in newspaper articles. We focus on the issue of bicycle riding in Japan and clarify the change of social context by using newspaper article. We show that wording in newspaper articles on bicycle riding in Japan has been changed during the past 11 years.

Process mining techniques enable the discovery and analysis of business processes, identifying opportunities for improvement. However, processes are often comprised of separately managed procedures that have separate log files, impossible to mine in an integrative manner. A preprocessing step that merges log files is quite straightforward when the logs have common case IDs. However, when cases in the different logs have many-to-many relationships among them this is more challenging. In this paper we present an approach for merging event logs which is capable of dealing with all kinds of relationships between logs, one-to-one or many-to-many. The approach matches cases in the logs, using temporal relations and text mining techniques. We have implemented the algorithm and tested it on a comprehensive set of synthetic logs.

Nowadays, companies have to report a large number of data sets (e.g., sustainability data) regarding their products to different legal authorities. However, in today's complex supply chains products are the outcome of the collaboration of many companies. To gather the needed data sets, companies have to employ cross-organizational and long-running data collection processes that imply great variability. To support such scenarios, we have designed a lightweight, automated approach for contextual process configuration. That approach can capture the contextual properties of the respective situations and, based on them, automatically configure a process instance accordingly, even without human involvement. Finally, we implemented our approach and started an industrial evaluation.

Enterprise architecture (EA) is a discipline driving change within organizations. The management of EA change is a challenging task for enterprise architects, due to the complex dependencies amongst EA models when evolving towards different alternatives (To-be models). In this paper, we present an approach supporting design decision during EA evolution. The idea is to reason on (To-be) models when evolving to a posterior state. To that end, we rationalize on a set of design decisions that are mapped on a non deterministic finite automaton, which is then evaluated by Markov decision processes. The idea consists of computing EA models valuations while integrating both alternatives rewards and risks metrics. In doing so, we consider risk as a correctness factor to choose the best alternative. Finally, we simulate our risk-based approach using a manufacturing scenario and discuss its usefulness and applicability.

In the current fast-changing and turbulent operational environments, the organizations are continually being pressured by many endogenous and exogenous environmental variables. Many and complex effects occur simultaneously and large volumes of data are available. For this reason, in a process-based organization, when change is demanded (e.g., business processes re-engineering) it is difficult to collect, and interpret, the complete information about the current state of the organization. Therefore, a problem is how to decide which design actions should be enacted with the incomplete information available from the executed business processes. In this context, this paper combines information systems engineering (DEMO business transactions design) and operation research (Markov theories) to contribute to the decision-making body of knowledge. As the result, this solution enforces the organization with resiliency capabilities that are triggered whenever any misalignment occurs. The proposed solution is evaluated through argumentation and by a qualitative comparison between two Markov theories (MDP and POMDP) based on a real-world case study.

The field of humanitarian logistics has evolved rapidly over the past decade, drawing on contributions from the areas of operations research, business engineering, supply chain management, information systems, and computer sciences. Even more varied are the specific problems that are modeled and addressed, ranging monitoring of the supply chain as a whole to decision support for specific sourcing or distribution decisions. While recently, few studies have presented taxonomies and identified research gaps, there is to this date not yet a clear understanding of how the different methodologies and domains shall be combined to achieve a consistent mix of methods and tools. In this paper, we present a start towards this aim comparing two distinct perspectives and related research approaches, methods and tools: business engineering and operations research. Our findings indicate that there are real opportunities for interdisciplinary research to improve the overall performance of the humanitarian supply chain.

Portable devices have been experimented for data acquisition in different domains, e.g., logistics and census data acquisition. Nevertheless, their large-scale adoption depends on the development of effective applications with a careful interaction design. In this work, we revisit existing strategies for mobile application design and evaluation and use the Semiotic Ladder from Organizational Semiotics as an artifact to organize a set of guidelines. We propose a set of semiotic-informed guidelines with questions for evaluation of mobile application interfaces. We also propose a methodology for the evaluation of mobile application interfaces based on the proposed guidelines set. We demonstrate the use of the proposed methodology in the evaluation of four mobile application interfaces designed for phenological data acquisition in the field.

The fields of long-term digital preservation (DP) and enterprise content management (ECM) have remained, until recently, rather separated. Along with increasing amounts of digital content and evolving DP services, there is a need for maximal automation of preservation processes from ECM systems instead of continuing current resource-consuming practices. This paper aims at a design problem definition on the integration of ECM and DP solutions. In order to motivate and to define the problem in more detail, we conducted a review on ECM and DP literatures touching the issue. The review reveals a research gap addressing a need for designing new middleware solutions for interactive processes between ECM and DP. We suggest a general-level model of three such processes between ECM and DP: preservation administration, pre-ingest, and access. The article concludes with avenues for future research on novel solutions for integrating DP with contemporary ECM and other information systems in organizations.
