This paper addresses the factors that determine the survival of young software firms and startups. It specifically focusses on the role of venture capital and organizationally radical innovation in this. The interaction of venture capital investment with the type of innovation pursued by the software firm is shown to jointly increase survival in terms of time to acquisition.

Paper-based questionnaires are often used for collecting data in application domains like healthcare, psychology or education. Such paper-based approach, however, results in a massive workload for processing and analyzing the collected data. In order to relieve domain experts from these manual tasks, we propose a process-driven approach for implementing as well as running respective mobile business applications. In particular, the logic of a questionnaire is described in terms of an explicit process model. Based on this process model, in turn, multiple questionnaire instances may be created and enacted by a process engine. For this purpose, we present a generic architecture and demonstrate the development of electronic questionnaires in the context of scientific studies. Further, we discuss the major challenges and lessons learned. In this context the presented process-driven approach offers promising perspectives in respect to the development of mobile data collection applications.

Semantic integration remains a challenge, but it is particularly problematic in areas such as e-commerce, where ontologies are either nonexistent or have lightweight axiomatizations. In this paper we present a case study that examines how two weak ontologies can be mapped together in the e-commerce setting. We also examine the role that upper-level interlingua ontologies can play in the development of ontology mappings.

Enterprise systems offer the potential of integrating corporate functions as well as enabling business process improvements. These systems can be deployed in three different software sourcing modes: in-house, on-premises, and on-demand. This study examines whether software sourcing gestalts, i.e., combinations of IT resources and organisational resources involved, are able to absorb changes in the firm's environment. If this is the case, the prevailing gestalts of IT and organisational resources parsimoniously "fit" the chosen software sourcing mode in response to changing forces in the firm's environment.

Review ratings and text sentiments respectively represent quantitative and qualitative aspects of user-generated product reviews. These two types of polarity information complement each other in affecting consumers' review evaluation. Few extant studies consider the interplay of review rating and text sentiment on perceived review helpfulness. In this study, we attempt to investigate this potential interaction effect and examine whether it is conditional on review length. The empirical results from an analysis of 70,610 restaurant reviews from *** indicate that both review ratings and text sentiments exhibit negativity bias effect, such that negative ratings and texts are more helpful than positive ones. Meanwhile, the two types of review valence have a positive interaction effect on perceived review helpfulness. Moreover, the interaction effect of review rating and text sentiment is stronger for longer reviews.

This paper presents a novel task-oriented approach to crowdsource the drafting of a constitution. By considering micro-tasking as a particular form of crowdsourcing, it defines a workflow-based approach based on Onto2Flow, an ontology that models the basic concepts and roles to represent workflow-definitions. The approach is then applied to a prototype platform for constitution-making where human workers are requested to contribute to a set of tasks. The paper concludes by discussing previous approaches to participatory constitution-making and identifying areas for future work.

As modern day technologies advance, so have different methods in which users can interact with computers. Computers are currently being used in combination with devices like projectors for teaching and presentations, in which the mouse and the USB wireless presenter are two of the main presentation devices. However, such devices like the USB wireless presenter, is limited and cannot fully encapsulate what it aspires to simulate, a computer mouse. This device fails to simulate the movement of a mouse but may only simulate the actions of a right and left arrow key. This paper proposes a novel approach to allowing users to interact with a computer from a distance without the need of a mouse, but instead using a laser pointing device, a projector and a web camera, by developing a novel laser-touchscreen system. The test results confirmed the laser pointer could be used to simulate the movement of the mouse as well as mouse clicks with very high accuracy. It could also be potentially used in a gaming environment, especially in first person shooter games.

Social media can provide valuable information to support decision making in crisis management, such as in accidents, explosions, and fires. However, much of the data from social media are images, which are uploaded at a rate that makes it impossible for human beings to analyze them. To cope with that problem, we design and implement a database-driven architecture for fast and accurate fire detection named FFireDt. The design of FFireDt uses the instance-based learning through indexed similarity queries expressed as an extension of the relational Structured Query Language. Our contributions are: (i) the design of the Fast-Fire Detection (FFireDt), which achieves efficiency and efficacy rates that rival to the state-of-the-art techniques;(ii) the sound evaluation of 36 image descriptors, for the task of image classification in social media;(iii) the evaluation of content-based indexing with respect to the construction of instance-based classification systems;and (iv) the curation of a ground-truth annotated dataset of fire images from social media. Using real data from Flickr, the experiments showed that system FFireDt was able to achieve a precision for fire detection comparable to that of human annotators. Our results are promising for the engineering of systems to monitor images uploaded to social media services.
