While there is a general agreement on the need for tools, which guide the evolution of complex organizational systems, and while there already exists a wealth of tools and approaches for the measurement and management of complexity, it seems that in practice these approaches often fail to achieve the desired impact during transformation processes. Based on focus group data and based on related literature, we analyze the factors that hinder current complexity management systems from guiding enterprise transformations and contribute a set of design principles, which address these factors. In particular, it is important to be aware of the context, to use a consistent ontology, to pay attention to visualization and to raise awareness and support.

This research paper aims to identify the role of Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in a logistic chain managed by an international freight forwarder providing multimodal logistic services. More specifically it aims to identify how RFID technology impacts both: the productivity of operations and the management of logistics processes. The focus of the research is on the processes within and between two Distribution Centers (DC), namely a DC in China (point of origin) and a DC in Canada (point of destination), with a specific emphasis on one critical process: the deconsolidation of a Less than Truck load (LTL) container.

Background: Contemporary software development organizations utilize multiple channels to disseminate information about their indicators, measures, trends and predictions. Selecting these channels is usually done based on the availability of the visualization technology and a set of requirements elicited from stakeholders at the company. Eliciting these kind of requirements can be labor-intensive and time-consuming. Goal: The objective of this research is to develop a method for selecting which dashboard should be used. As the set of dissemination patterns of measures in modern organizations is limited, this method should be able to identify the needs of visualizations at the company and match them to the dissemination patterns and their supporting technology. Method: The research method applied is action research conducted at Volvo Car Group. The action research is conducted as part of a project redesigning a large project status reporting tool and has been designed to quantify the requirements elicited from the stakeholders of the system. Results: The results is the dashboard selection model which consists of seven dimensions - type of reporting, data acquisition method, type of stakeholders, method of delivery, frequency of updates, aim of the information, and length of data processing (flow). Conclusions: The conclusions show that using this model leads to a rapid identification of the best visualization method for measurement data, which has a cost-saving impact on measurement programs and effect-maximizing impact on the companies.

This paper studies the design of information systems that leverage the use of both sensors and the social web, while addressing solutions for children in socially challenging situations. Socially challenging situations are defined as situations in which one experiences negative social pressure and, therefore, requires immediate help from trusted people. The authors first provide a glimpse into the rapid development in sensors and the rise in the importance of the social web. The paper then sheds light on the theme of socially challenging situations, which is elaborated through two workshops, and defines the core areas of focus. Further, a low-fidelity prototype for the safety of children is created and evaluated in a small-scale user experiment. The state of the current technology is then reviewed in order to visualize the possible practical realization of solutions. The outcomes of these steps provide interesting insights for possible future work.

The paper takes a close look at a participatory design (PD) process with old users. We discuss how we organized and carried out the PD process so that they could participate in the mutual learning and co-construction activities on their own terms. We use the design of a radio to illustrate how the old users participated in the co-construction. We discuss some important topics to consider when organizing PD with old users: recruiting, timing, continuity, representativity and immediacy.

Decentralization of organizations and subsequent change of their management and operation styles require changes in organization's processes and heavily involve IT. Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks fit to primarily centralized organizational structures, and as such have shortcomings when used in decentralized organizations. We illustrate this idea on the example of one organization in the Higher Education sector that faces decentralization of its structure and has to adapt to it. Overcoming these challenges requires some new principles to be introduced and incorporated into the EA knowledge. In particular for IT governance, in this study we argue that peer-to-peer principles can offer more suitable governance over current EA frameworks as they are able to better align with decentralized components of an organizational structure.

Various proposals for how to eliminate some of the obstacles in multi-criteria decision making exist and methods for introducing so called surrogate weights have proliferated for some time in the form of ordinal ranking methods for the criteria weights. Considering the decision quality, one main problem is that the input information to ordinal methods is often too restricted. At the same time, decision-makers often possess more background information, for example regarding the relative strengths of the criteria, and might want to use that. Thus, some form of strength relation often exists that can be utilised when transforming orderings into weights. In this article, using a quite extensive simulation approach, we suggest a thorough testing methodology and analyse the relevance of a set of ordering methods including to what extent these improve the efficacy of rank order weights and provide a reasonable base for decision making.

Colored Petri Nets (CPN) are a widely used graphical modeling language to manage business processes. business processes often appear in dynamic environments;therefore, context adaptation has recently emerged as a new challenge to explicitly address fitness between business process modeling and its execution environment. Although CPN can introduce data by defining internal data records, this is not enough to capture the complexity and dynamics of the execution context data. This paper extends CPN tools to support the management of context-adaptive business processes. To achieve this challenge, CPN tools are integrated with ontology-based context models that properly represent and manage the business process context. This allows context to be appropriately modeled at design time, and queried and updated at runtime. The combination of ontologies with CPN tools presents a way to bridge business processes management with context data management while treating data and behavior as separate concerns. In this way, system design, reuse, and maintenance are also improved.

Context-aware systems are used to aid users in their daily lives. In the recent years, researchers are exploring how context aware systems can benefit humanity through assist patients, specifically those who suffer incurable diseases, to cope with their illness. In this paper, we direct our work to help people who suffer from Parkinson disease. We propose PHEN, Parkinson Helper Engine Network System, a context-aware system that aims to support Parkinson disease patients on m any levels. We use ontology is for context representation and modeling. Then the ontology based context model is used to learn with Bayesian Belief network (BBN) which is beneficial in handling the uncertainty aspect of context-aware systems.
