Background. Global Software Engineering (GSE) represents a recognized practice that facilitates the collaborative development of software artifacts across geographically distributed teams. In this context, the successful design and maintenance of software requires continuous collaboration to manage critical architectural decisions effectively. Consequently, various tools for Architecture Design Decision (ADD) have been developed to support design thinking and the decision-making process. However, recent research studies have drawn attention to challenges in managing ADDs within distributed environments. Aim. Our study aims to determine assessment metrics to evaluate if the existing ADD tools support Distributed Collaborative Design (DCD) in the GSE setting. Method. We used a Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) method and conducted expert surveys to define and validate the assessment metrics. Result. We present six assessment metrics for evaluating the support of ADD tools in facilitating distributed collaborative design (DCD). Conclusion. The assessment metrics provide a tool analysis to extract insights into current practice within an ADD process in distributed development environments.

Frailty and multimorbidity becomes more prevalent as the population continues to age. We employ directed hypergraphs to represent the complex interactions among multiple health conditions and capture the inter-dependencies within multimorbidity sets. We introduce the inclusion of 'Mortality' nodes into directed hypergraphs. Through the analysis of ResearchOne data, we aim to identify the most prevalent combinations of frailty conditions alongside their co-occurrence with mortality, providing valuable knowledge for healthcare professionals to improve patient care and develop targeted interventions. We demonstrate that hypergraphs enable us to determine the probability of acquiring another electronic frailty index (eFI) condition, understand condition connectivity and sequentiality, and identify the most influential hyper-arcs. The findings from this study suggest that hypergraphs enable us to retain progression information compared to holistic views, facilitating the implementation of more effective healthcare strategies.

Adding knowledge to data or information is an essential step for new information system, which need to break down silos in order to support a large diversity of applications. Conventional integration approaches have difficulties in meeting the flexibility required by new needs, mainly because they rely on rigid schema. Graph-based approaches, such as knowledge graphs, are promising, as they allow to use different graph models such as RDF or property graph models. However, they do not make it easy to describe complex relationships at different levels of abstraction. The reification process, already well-studied for RDF, is a promising solution to add new representation capabilities. This paper delves into the process of knowledge reification within the property graph model as a novel approach to enhance the expressivity of knowledge graph model by adding capabilities of representing complex relationships and multilevel abstractions. Based on the study of reification models for RDF, we formalize a new model for property graphs by generalizing the different reification techniques.

In this paper of study, we propose a rigorous scientific approach to ensure the transition to Enhanced BPMN2.0 Transform the metamodel into an executable business process model. Large-scale agile software development is increasingly being organized with product management. Although product management is familiar to software engineering, we need research-based knowledge about organizing product management in an agile development context. This study focuses on product management challenges and configurations in a Nordic fintech organization with 10,000 employees. We conducted 19 interviews with participants involved in core product management activities. The study identifies ten key factors that hinder product management performance in a large-scale agile product company. Further, we present six product management configurations used in the fintech organization. The most suitable setup depends on the product lifecycle stage, product size, and development team setup. Our summary of the product management configurations and challenges can guide software product managers working in large-scale agile companies.

Portugal aims to reduce road crashes and fatalities through the implementation of the European Union's Vision Zero strategy. However, for municipalities, choosing effective interventions at a reduced cost is a challenging task. The choice of the proper countermeasures obeys to a series of constraints imposed by local budgets, municipal governments, urban planning strategies, existing infrastructure, and others. To aid decision-makers in designing Municipal Road Safety Plans that maximize safety at reduced costs, a planning approach was built. The proposed approach presents structured sets of countermeasures, linking crash types and site characteristics with potential interventions. The work used real road crash data from three Portuguese municipalities and comprised three stages. First, a cluster analysis to identify and characterize road crashes according to crash type (e.g., vehicle type, number of vehicles) and crash site (e.g., road alignment, cross section, intersection type, visibility). Then, a literature review and an empirical study supported the identification of possible groups of countermeasures for each crash type, and the specification of sets of interventions for each countermeasure group. The final proposal was confirmed by selecting crash hot spots from the original database evaluate if the measures had been correctly assigned to each crash type, providing both exemplification and validation. This work highlights the potential for a structured approach to identify efficient and cost-effective solutions when planning road safety interventions to be included in Municipal Road Safety Plans.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential for enhancing public sector services. However, the lack of explainability within many AI systems, particularly those relying on opaque 'black box' neural networks, hinders widespread adoption due to concerns about fairness, accountability, and trust. To address this, explainable AI (XAI) has emerged as a vital area of research, aiming to illuminate the reasoning behind AI decisions. Neuro-Symbolic AI (NSAI) provides a powerful technique for XAI, combining the strengths of symbolic reasoning with neural pattern recognition. Enterprise Modeling (EM) offers systematic methodologies to capture multifaceted domain knowledge, including process models, rules, and ontologies. This paper explores the potential synergy between XAI, NSAI, and EM for developing trustworthy and transparent AI solutions tailored to the public sector. While this integration offers exciting possibilities for explainable AI, the field is still nascent.

While context information has been demonstrated to be essential in understanding processes, the use of context in process discovery techniques is still very limited. This paper proposes a novel process discovery method that improves process analysis through the definition and exploitation of activity specialization hierarchies. Our method includes strategies for extracting process models by flexibly incorporating contextual information into process activities, allowing for seamless transitions across different levels of contextual detail. We use a real case study on bees' foraging to show how activity specialization hierarchies can help in contextualizing the discovered processes. This integrated method provides a comprehensive framework for contextualized process analysis, offering practical insights for both researchers and practitioners seeking to analyze processes whose execution varies depending on their context.

Effective monitoring and control of particle sizes play a pivotal role in minimizing variability and enhancing energy efficiency within mineral processing plants. The conventional industry approach relies on laboratory procedures for particle size analysis, yet challenges arise in obtaining representative samples from bulk materials and rapidly assessing particle size. To address this, we introduce a novel machine vision framework based on Edge AI architecture and deep convolutional neural algorithms. This framework enables real-time particle size analysis, offering an alternative to traditional offline laboratory methods. This paper is a crucial component of our proposed concept and focuses solely on validating a deep convolutional neural network algorithm trained using synthetic datasets. The introduced model achieved an impressive mean Average Precision (mAP) score of 0.96, with processing times of under 1 s. These outcomes underscore the potential of deep convolutional neural networks for real-time particle size segmentation, representing a significant step toward pioneering an innovative Edge AI system for particle size assessment within mineral processing plants.

The presence of Artificial Intelligence and specifically Machine Learning (ML) has increased in all manner of software applications, and it already plays a major role in a variety of systems pertaining to information Science such as public transport, disease diagnosis support and other medical problems. This increase in use has raised concerns about possible environmental impacts, since ML models require to be trained in datacentres that can impose a high ecological toll. With the aim of uncovering new ways of reducing the energy consumption of ML models, in this study we will explore the energetic impact of class balance for binary classification tasks by comparing a set of logistic regression models (LRMs) trained on a synthetic balanced dataset against another set trained on a synthetic, unbalanced dataset. We focus on the total energy and time required to complete the task, and discover that the order in energy efficiency of the models remained consistent regardless of class balance, but those trained on the unbalanced dataset required between 1.42 and 1.5 times more energy to complete the tasks, despite requiring only around 1 s more of runtime. We finish by analysing the results and proposing using synthetic datasets to estimate the energy cost of different hyperparameter options for LRMs.
