Methods from Operations Research (OR) are employed to address a diverse set of business Process Management (BPM) problems such as determining optimum resource allocation for process tasks. However, it has not been comprehensively investigated how BPM methods can be used for solving OR problems, although process mining, for example, provides powerful analytical instruments. Hence, in this work, we show how process discovery, a subclass of process mining, can generate problem knowledge to optimize the solutions of metaheuristics to solve a novel OR problem, i.e., the combined cobot assignment and job shop scheduling problem. This problem is relevant as cobots can cooperate with humans without the need for a safe zone and currently significantly impact transitions in production environments. In detail, we propose two process discovery based neighborhood operators, namely process discovery change and process discovery dictionary change, and implement and evaluate them in comparison with random and greedy operations based on a real-world data set. The approach is also applied to another OR problem for generalizability reasons. The combined OR and process discovery approach shows promising results, especially for larger problem instances.

Augmented Reality (AR) has become increasingly popular in recent years and is being used in a variety of fields, including education, entertainment, marketing, healthcare, and tourism. AR has appeared as a vital marketing technique, making the hotels improve theway the guests perceive the environment they in. AR can be a powerful tool for hotels looking to improve the guest experience, increase revenue, and differentiate themselves from competitors. By leveraging AR technology, hotels can create memorable and engaging experiences that leave a lasting impression on guests. The present research expands on the "Uses and Gratifications" framework, which was previously applied to web contexts, and now extends its application to a new context, namely augmented reality. It seeks to investigate the effect of the key benefits generated from interacting with AR on consumer satisfaction and purchase intentions within Hotel sector. Consequently, the research will integrate the Uses and Gratifications model with Technology AcceptanceModel to investigate the effect of augmented reality on consumer satisfaction and purchase intentions. An empirical investigation was conducted in hotel sector in Jordan. Hypotheses were tested and the results showed that AR has significant impact on consumer significant and purchase intention.

Chatbots such as ChatGPT have caused tremendous hype lately. For BPM applications, it is often not clear how to apply chatbots to generate business value. Hence, this work aims at the systematic analysis of existing chatbots for their support of conversational process modelling as a process-oriented capability. Application scenarios are identified along the process life cycle. Then a systematic literature review on conversational process modelling is performed. The resulting taxonomy serves as input for the identification of application scenarios for conversational process modelling, including paraphrasing and improvement of process descriptions. The application scenarios are evaluated for existing chatbots based on a real-world test set from the higher education domain. It contains process descriptions as well as corresponding process models, together with an assessment of the model quality. Based on the literature and application scenario analyses, recommendations for the usage (practical implications) and further development (research directions) of conversational process modelling are derived.

In the business automation world, APIs are everywhere. They provide access to enterprise tools such as customer relationship management solutions, or custom automations such as unattended RPA bots that automate repetitive tasks. Unfortunately, they may not be accessible to the business users who need them but are not equipped with the necessary technical skills to leverage them. Most recently, chatbots are becoming the go-to medium to make automation software accessible to business users. Since API specifications aren't written with a chatbot use in mind, additional work is needed to make APIs accessible through a natural language interface. Making this process scalable to many APIs requires an automated data training pipeline for intent recognition models, a crucial component within chatbots to understand natural language utterances from users. More accurate intent recognition models lead to better user experience and satisfaction. Prior work proposed approaches to extracting intents from OpenAPI specifications. However, the resulting models tend to be brittle due to weaknesses in training data. In this work, we propose a data augmentation approach based on paraphrasing using large language models and propose a system to generate sentences to train intent recognition models. Experimental results highlight the effectiveness of our approach. Our system is deployed in a real world setting.

Stresses and temptations in the workplace foster employee behaviour that is less than desirable. The term weasel has been used to describe employees that exhibit a variety of undesirable behaviour at work, including taking undeserved credit, performing below expectation, shirking work, and making co-workers look bad. While this behaviour has traditionally been hard to detect, contemporary systems record many of our work-related actions and the resulting event logs can be subjected to process mining analysis. In this paper we focus on detecting weasels through the evidence they leave behind in such event logs. We capture a variety of weasel behaviours in the form of patterns and suggest how process mining can be used to unearth this behaviour. The patterns are validated through a survey with relevant stakeholders.

Process extraction from text is an important task of process discovery, for which various approaches have been developed in recent years. However, differently from other information extraction tasks, there is a lack of gold-standard corpora of business process descriptions carefully annotated with all the entities and relationships of interest. This paper presents the PET dataset, a first corpus of business process descriptions annotated with activities, gateways, actors, and flow information. We present our new resource, including a variety of baselines to benchmark the difficulty and challenges of business process extraction from text. The PET dataset, annotation guidelines, and inception schema are freely available via ***/datasets/patriziobellan/PET.

To develop strategic insights regarding the aggregatemining disputes in the province of Ontario, Canada, and to better understand their structured power hierarchies, we developed a two-level hierarchical graph model based on three case-specific classical conflict models. The stability analysis of the two-level hierarchical graph model shows that despite producing potential resolutions at the local level (sub-models), the model does not result in an equilibrium. This finding suggests that in the absence of preferences by the common decision-makers (i.e., provincial, and local governments), finding potential resolutions to this class of disputes may be difficult.

business processes are regularly modified either to capture requirements from the organization's environment or due to internal optimization and restructuring. Implementing the changes into the individual work routines is aided by change management tools. These tools aim at the acceptance of the process by and empowerment of the process executor. They cover a wide range of general factors and seldom accurately address the changes in task execution and sequence. Furthermore, change is only framed as a learning activity, while most obstacles to change arise from the inability to unlearn or forget behavioural patterns one is acquainted with. Therefore, this paper aims to develop and demonstrate a notation to capture changes in business processes and identify elements that are likely to present obstacles during change. It connects existing research from changes in work routines and psychological insights from unlearning and intentional forgetting to the BPM domain. The results contribute to more transparency in business process models regarding knowledge changes. They provide better means to understand the dynamics and barriers of change processes.

With the progressing developments of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in business and society, understanding the role of AI in enabling organizational change and agility has become an increasingly relevant area of inquiry. However, despite this interest, the specific effects of an AI architecture capability that helps firms design and deploy AI technologies in the organization on firms' dynamic change capability remains an underexplored area in the literature. To address this gap, we built upon the dynamic capabilities view and conducted an extensive survey of senior business and IT managers in the Netherlands. Based on a sample of 168 final respondents, we tested a research model with associated hypotheses using a composite-based structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. The analyses confirm the hypotheses and show that AI architecture positively enables the firm's change capability. Furthermore, the firm's change capability positively impacts operational agility. Hence, ourwork extends the current knowledge base of dynamic capabilities while offering various implications for practice. These practical recommendations could facilitate managers overcoming change capability and agility challenges.

Process discovery is one of the most challenging tasks in process mining. Based on event data, a process discovery approach generates a process model that captures the behavior recorded in the data. The hybrid miner is a two-step process discovery approach that creates a balance between the advantages of formal modeling and the necessity of remaining informal for vague structures. In the first discovery step, an informal causal graph is constructed based on direct succession dependencies between activities. In the second discovery step, the hybrid miner tries to convert the discovered dependencies into formal constraints. For vague structures where formal constraints cannot be justified, dependencies are depicted informally. In this paper, we reduce the representational bias of the hybrid miner by exploiting causal graph metrics to mine for long-term dependencies. Our evaluation shows that the proposed approach leads to the discovery of more precise models.
