We propose a novel research line integrating Statistical Model Checking (SMC), a family of simulation-based analysis techniques from quantitative formal methods, with Process Mining (PM), a collection of data-driven process-oriented techniques. SMC and PM are complementary. SMC focuses on performing the right number of simulations to obtain statistically-reliable estimations (e.g., the probability of success of an attack). PM focuses on reconstructing a model of a system using logs of its traces. Nevertheless, both approaches aim at providing evidence of issues/guarantees of the system, and at proposing enhancements. We aim at enriching SMC by explaining why it produced specific estimates. This might help, e.g., identifying issues in the model (validation) or suggesting improvements (enhancement). Given that SMC uses statistics to decide what is the correct number of simulations (or traces), we avoid by-construction the complex issue of under-representation of system behavior in the logs crucial to many PM exercises. This work-in-progress paper demonstrates the proposed methodology and its usefulness using a simple example from the security threat modeling domain. We show how PM helps highlighting both mistakes in the model, and possibilities for improvement.

Serverless computing shifts the responsibilities of provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure resources from developers to cloud service providers, allowing developers to focus solely on their applications. Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is a serverless computing approach that enables developers to develop their applications as event-driven functions. There are many FaaS platforms available through public cloud providers or open-source distributions. Understanding the differences in these platforms and keeping up to date with their latest developments is challenging. Hence, it is necessary to systematically model the information about FaaS Platforms to allow practitioners to select the platform most suited for realizing their use cases. This paper presents the Faa-SOnto ontology, a semantic model that represents the characteristics of FaaS platforms. We developed the ontology systematically following the NeOn methodology. We fully implemented the ontology using OWL2 and created a knowledge base with information about ten different FaaS platforms. The knowledge base is semi-automatically populated. On top of the knowledge base, we developed a minimal decision support system to enable the sorting and filtering of FaaS platforms based on their characteristics to facilitate an interactive platform selection process.

We use Kremser and Blagoev's [1] role-routine ecology to theorize about the effects of concurrency in complex service organizations, such as outpatient medical clinics. In a typical clinic, teams of specialized individuals serve multiple clients at the same time. There can be concurrency within a patient visit (a technician may be preparing for a procedure while the doctor talks to the patient) and concurrency between patient visits (multiple patients being treated in the clinic). Using data from electronic health records, we estimate the effects of concurrency within and between patient visits on the duration of patient visits in a set of dermatology clinics. As expected, we find that concurrency within patient visits is associated with reduced duration, while concurrency between visits is associated with increased duration. We discuss the implication of these findings for process mining and discovery of process models in organizations where process instances are not independent.

The digital transformation of the IT consulting domain recently gained momentum due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the range of IT consulting services that are fully digital is still very limited. Plus, there are no standardized and established methods for describing digital IT consulting services, nor there is any suitable tooling for digital IT consulting service provisioning. The present work aims to reduce this gap by contributing to establishing a well-defined approach to formally describing digital IT consulting services that could possibly be a candidate for standardization. Building upon (i) the ontology DITCOS-O, which provides the semantic basis for our approach, and (ii) the YAML-based description notation DITCOS-DN, which we leverage to describe digital IT consulting service models, we propose a graphical, web-based editor (called DITCOS-ModEd) to simplify service model maintenance. Following a design science based research process, we developed a prototype and empirically evaluated its applicability with the help of IT consultants. This first evaluation allowed us to identify some limitations and to plan specific improvements, both to the underlying artifacts DITCOS-O and DITCOS-DN, as well as to DITCOS-ModEd itself.

Predictive process monitoring (PPM) offers multiple benefits for enterprises, e.g., the early planning of resources. The success of PPM-based actions depends on the prediction quality and the explainability of the prediction results. Both, prediction quality and explainability, can be influenced by unseen behavior, i.e., events that have not been observed in the training data so far. Unseen behavior can be caused by, for example, concept drift. Existing approaches are concerned with strategies on how to update the prediction model if unseen behavior occurs. What has not been investigated so far, is the question how unseen behavior itself can be predicted, comparable to approaches from machine learning such as zero-shot learning. Zero-shot learning predicts new classes in case of unavailable training data by exploiting context information. This work follows this idea and proposes an approach to predict unseen process behavior, i.e., unseen event labels, based on process event streams by exploiting compliance constraints as context information. This is reasonable as compliance constraints change frequently and are often the cause for concept drift. The approach employs state transition systems as prediction models in order to explain the effects of predicting unseen behavior. The approach also provides update strategies as the event stream evolves. All algorithms are prototypically implemented and tested on an artificial as well as real-world data set.

The digital age has made identity a crucial aspect of online activities due to our increasing reliance on digital platforms. This has led to the development of different identity management systems, relying on centralised infrastructures but exposed to security vulnerabilities. Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) is a promising alternative, as it allows individuals to control their personal data and securely share it with others without relying on a central authority. However, developing such systems and executing the related operations is complex and challenging, especially for non-expert users. To simplify the development process, we propose ChorSSI, a BPMN-based framework that supports the modelling of an SSI system and the execution of the related interactions. The design relies on BPMN choreography diagrams, permitting the representation of SSI interactions between parties in a distributed manner. The proposed framework was implemented and tested over the real Chromaway property transaction case study.

Computerized System Validation (CSV) aims to ensure that software systems in regulated environments, such as the pharmaceutical industry, adhere to strict regulatory requirements. It plays a crucial role in guaranteeing the safety of products or services by verifying that computerized systems operate according to the specified guidelines. However, CSV is a complex and resource-intensive process that poses challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises in particular, making it challenging to be implemented effectively. In this paper, we investigate the potential of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) as a solution to partially automate CSV and address these challenges. We present an ongoing project where we apply RPA to CSV and discuss its effectiveness in reducing the time and effort associated with manual CSV activities. We also describe the challenges that we encountered during the implementation of RPA in the context of CSV. Our research highlights the possibility of extending the application of RPA beyond simple data entry and verification tasks, allowing for the automation of entire complex processes.

Predictive process analytics enables proactive situational awareness by predicting the future of ongoing process instances. To provide a fair comparison between different approaches developed for process prediction, they have been evaluated on publicly available event logs using the next step prediction task. This paper aims to raise awareness of the label ambiguity problem in the context of process prediction by investigating how uncertainty in the ground truth labels affects next step prediction. Label ambiguity arises from cases in the event log that have different continuation options. We argue that the uncertainty created thereby negatively affects evaluation results. To this end, we present a synthetic example that illustrates the problem of label ambiguity in process prediction and quantify the occurrence of ambiguous ground truth labels in common benchmark datasets. Finally, we discuss implications and present ideas that aim to initiate a discussion on how to deal with label ambiguity in process prediction.

Many software businesses face increasing regulatory pressure and requirements changes that target more sustainable software systems. Therefore, integrating sustainability into software architecture is crucial for the long-term viability of organizations. In this study, we explore how new sustainability concerns can be effectively tackled within software architecture, especially when established architecture standards are followed. We present two main contributions derived from an industrial case study. First, we present the extension of existing architecture views, called decision maps, to trace the involvement of architecture standards. Such extension supports architects through informed decision making by integrating sustainability aspects while adhering to architecture standards. Second, we propose a set of key performance indicators to monitor the ongoing application of these standards and assess their impact on the software architecture and its sustainability over time. Our findings provide valuable insights and instruments for experts to first assess sustainability within the constraints of architecture standards, and then monitor their sustainability impact. This will help to meet regulatory requirements and align software design with strategic sustainability goals. We provide tangible guiding steps to improve sustainability awareness and decision-making.

Designers often project into their creations usage models that attempt to idealise and anticipate how users will interact with the future system. However, these conceptual models do not always match the actual mental models of users. This mismatch may result in suboptimal functioning that negatively impacts user experience. Discovering these deviations, especially in early design stages, could serve to align the system to the existing mental models or to train users appropriately for new paradigms. This paper reports on work in progress addressing the challenge of discovering models of user behaviour from usability tests on user interfaces. We present a case study performed at the Spanish National Geographic Institute, where a new geospatial search engine has been developed. Twenty-one participants, including novice and expert users, were recruited to perform a search task with the new geospatial search engine. The interactions mined were recorded as event logs and analysed with process mining techniques, descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that the mental model of users is biased toward the archetype of a regular search engine, rather than taking advantage of the geographic functions provided by the platform, as intended by the designers. This case study illustrates the potential that interaction mining can add to the design and evaluation of new user interfaces.
