The Internet of Things (IoT) enables a variety of smart applications, including smart home, smart factory, and smart health. As business Process Management (BPM) can also benefit from IoT technologies, the combined use of BPM and IoT has attracted considerable research works. Providing integrated lifecycle support for modeling, executing, and monitoring IoT-aware business processes constitutes a challenge. Existing process modeling and execution languages such as BPMN 2.0 are unable to fully meet the requirements of IoT-aware processes. In this paper, we present an extension of BPMN 2.0 for modeling, executing, and monitoring IoT-aware business processes. We introduce specific artifacts and events that enable IoT awareness during the execution and monitoring of IoT-driven business processes. The resulting framework is illustrated along a real-world scenario.

Our earlier work showed how to improve the development path for an information system from initial user wishes via a conceptual specification (CS) to an implementation design in a systematic way. A CS should be implementation-independent. We generated implementations in a few directions, e.g., towards a relational DBMS using SQL. An object-oriented (OO) implementation design is another important direction. This paper works out a systematic mapping towards an OO-implementation, by giving formal mapping rules or 'semi-automatic' guidelines. We also look at the differences between the OO-mapping and our earlier SQL-mappings. E.g., how to specify constraints: SQL has language constructs to specify constraints, e.g., (foreign) keys, but programming languages usually lack such constructs. How to deal with it in a systematicway? This is an essential issue in software development, but one which is systematically overlooked. We start from a general analysis resulting in a CS and prove that we can create an OO-implementation out of it. Without any change in that CS, we also can create a Relational implementation. We map a CS systematically towards an OO-implementation. We use the MVC-pattern and create a default class diagram (statics/data) and default methods (dynamics/processes) from a CS. Our enhanced class diagrams inherit the constraints from the CS, which are then worked out systematically into OO pseudo-code. We generate pseudo-code which an OO-programmer can easily transform into real code. We also compare it to the SQL-mapping. Being able to map our CSs to different software paradigms shows that our CSs are truly implementation-independent.

The Covid-19 epidemic ushered in a new era of hybrid learning. After the Covid-19 pandemic, information technology (IT) acceptance is no longer a problem. And given that it is the "postdigital", technology-related constructs should be updated and devoted to creating a lifelong agile learning environment (LE). The research question is how to manage collaborative learning (CL) activities through online integrated platforms to better serve outcome-based education (OBE). This research reviews the digital transformation advancement in learning management systems and points out that the digitalization LE breeds postdigital learning, which is based on IT "affordance" and well organization and distribution of course resources. When led by OBE, this paper employs qualitative synthesis research and to foster personal development summarizes the appropriate method for managing CL activities as student-centered lifelong learning, organization of role-based activities, and all-around assessment. Finally, the findings are a conceptual framework for student-centered learning within digitalization LE and an illustration of a curriculum with a customized Feishu of ByteDance performing CL. The contribution involves learning in less structured environments, such as an advanced enterprise collaboration and management platform, which prompts creative and innovative approaches to uncertainty and change. As a result, the practical implication facilitates students to find both their will and their own creative and exploratory ways of lifelong learning.

Modeling business processes can be difficult, especially if they are flexible and the models consist of many interconnected parts. This is the case for hybrid process modeling approaches, such as fragment-based case management. Also, erroneous and low-quality models have adverse effects on the whole BPM lifecycle. To support creating fragment-based case models, we provide a set of guidelines and integrate them into a modeling tool called fcm-js. Our evaluation shows that fcm-js improves the quality of the process model as well as the user experience during modeling.

Mining useful information to analyze knowledge-intensive business processes requires data that describes activities of knowledge workers. Emails are widely used in organizations to provide support in the functioning of knowledge-intensive processes. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has increased reliance on technologies such as email to help facilitate communication within organizations to make up for the lack of face-to-face contact. In this work, we propose an activity mining technique, which receives an incoming email message, classifies the sender's intent and translates it into a set of business process activities. Specifically, we leverage deep learning language models to first classify the email body into a group of intents, which are then mapped to related activities. To our knowledge, we propose the first transfer-learning based solution for mining activity information from emails. The effectiveness of our solution was evaluated on real-world data coming from email exchanges between knowledge workers. Our results based on unsupervised experiments and a field study show that transformer models can be used to semantically label emails and that mapping activities to matched intents is highly accurate.

An electronic invoice (E-invoice) is a kind of document that records the transactions of goods or services and then stores and exchanges them electronically. E-invoice is an emerging practice and presents a valuable source of information for many areas. Dealing with these invoices is usually a very challenging task. information reported is often incomplete or presents mistakes. Before any meaningful treatment of these invoices, it is necessary to evaluate the product represented in each file. This research puts forward a conceptual framework to explain how to apply machine learning technology to extract meaningful information from invoices at different levels of aggregation. Related work in the field is contextualized within a given framework. A study case based on real data from Electronic invoice (NF-e) and Electronic Consumer Invoice (NFC-e) documents in Brazil, related to B2B and retail transactions. We compared traditional term frequency models with the Convolutions sentence classification models. Implementation of smart meters is revolutionizing traditional energy grids, promoting energy efficiency, and enabling two-way communication between energy suppliers and consumers. This paper presents a scoping review of smart meters investigating functional and non-functional expectations, benefits, drawbacks, and factors influencing implementation of smart meters. The study aims at providing an overview of existing research in this area and identify gaps and limitations in literature, especially in between smart meter literature and how consumers perceive smart meters. Through a scoping review process, 16 articles were selected for analysis. The findings highlight the importance of real-time information, remote monitoring, accuracy, privacy, and security in smart meter functionality. The benefits encompass improved customer awareness, energy efficiency, and grid stability, while the drawbacks include privacy concerns and limitations in current standards. Factors influencing adoption include cost-benefit analysis, regulatory policies, consumer awareness, and technical considerations. The study reveals research gaps related to long-term performance, social and psychological factors, diverse consumer segments, privacy and data security, economic viability, regional contexts, and stakeholder dynamics. Addressing these gaps will contribute to maximizing benefits of smart meters, informing policymakers, utility companies, and researchers for effective strategies in energy management and sustainability. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and underscores the need to understand consumers' perspectives on smart meters.

Process mining event logs are traditionally formatted to reflect the execution of a collection of individual process instances, with a fixed case notion. In practice, process instances are often intertwined, and the scope of a particular process is less static. When flattening complex application data to traditional event log formats, like XES, problems such as divergence and convergence occur in the resulting event logs. Object-centric process mining with its object-centric event log (OCEL) format were introduced to tackle these issues, supporting multiple case notions with a single event log. While the adoption of object-centric logging is starting to gain momentum in several domains, the use of OCEL for event logs of blockchain applications has seen little research. In this paper, we investigate blockchain data structures and map them to OCEL logging capabilities. We present an approach to extracting data from blockchain applications that requires little domain knowledge. We discuss how to map data items to fit object-centric event logs and provide and analyze a corresponding OCEL event log for a blockchain application. The approach is evaluated based on a use case and contrasted to a previous case study.

This work aims to address a problem of attracting companies for direct investments in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, with the purpose to aid the Economic Development Agency of Pernambuco (ADEPE) to rank the potential investors. Considering different points of view of multiple stakeholders of ADEPE, the Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) and FITradeoff (Flexible and Interactive Tradeoff) techniques are applied in the construction of the multicriteria decision model. The problem structuring provides a better understanding of an investor's decision-making process and leads to a better pitch to persuade them to invest in Pernambuco. Furthermore, the structured problem can be analyzed by a quantitative method aiming to rank the best alternatives that could match with the proposal of the Pernambuco state as a win-win investment movement. For that, the multicriteria decision model is built based on the VFT approach and the FITradeoff method. A set of 25 alternatives were defined and evaluated with respect to six criteria. Throughout the process, the preference modeling is performed in an interactive and flexible way where the decision makers (DMs) can switch between elicitation by decomposition to holistic evaluations.
