Traditionally, Performance Management (PM) is considered one of the core functions of management accounting, focused on the results of business units and primarily based on financial measures. However, with the growing emphasis on process orientation and the implementation of business Process Management (BPM), traditional PM needs to be adapted to measure what is managed, i. e. business processes. To achieve this, process-oriented organizations rely on a Process Performance Measurement System (PPMS), with Process Mining as the state-of-the-art tool for monitoring and improving processes. In theory, the ProcessMining-supported PPMS should be well integrated into the PMSystem (PMS), and process performance should be measured holistically, i.e. by both quantitative and qualitative figures. However, in practice it remains unclear whether these criteria are being met and whether management accounting is involved in the utilization of Process Mining and the development of a holistic PPMS. To address this research gap, a multiple case study within the German energy industry was conducted. Drawing on data from 33 semi-structured interviews, this paper presents a five-stage maturity model for the implementation of a holistic, Process Mining-supported PPMS and examines how management accounting can promote progression along this path. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, this study further contributes to research by demonstrating that the involvement of management accounting is not only beneficial to the success of Process Mining and BPM, but also crucial to the management accounting profession itself.

Longitudinal business Process Management (BPM) studies are rare. BPM maturity and process performance can be used to quantify an organization's BPM evolution. This research aims to examine the growth of BPM maturity over time and its impact on process performance inside an organization in continuous transformation. Over a seven-year period, BPM maturity and process performance were measured annually at a Dutch university. During this time, the organization has undergone an organizational restructuring with a focus on process management and has temporarily switched completely to digital education propelled by the Covid-19 crisis. Based on a repeated cross-sectional study (N = 921), the results present key BPM maturity features that are critical during disruptive organizational transformations. Furthermore, we found that BPM maturity is positively related to process performance throughout organizational changes during the period of our research.

Process automation is a crucial strategy for improving business processes, but little attention has been paid to the effects that automation has once it is operational. This paper addresses this research problem by reviewing the literature on human-automation interaction. Although many of the studies in this field have been conducted in different domains, they provide a foundation for developing propositions about process automation effects. Our analysis focuses on how humans perceive automation technology when working within a process, allowing us to propose an effective engagement model between technology, process participants, process managers, and software developers. This paper offers insights and recommendations that can help organizations optimize their use of process automation. We further derive novel research questions for a discourse within the process automation community.

Organizations must pay close attention to human resource development in order to be successful. Because of this, competence-based approaches have received increased attention, as the demand for qualified people with the right combination of competences establishes itself as a major factor of organizational performance. This paper examines how competences can be incorporated into Enterprise Architecture modeling: (i) we identify a key set of competence-related concepts such as skills, knowledge, and attitudes, (ii) analyze and relate them using a reference ontology (grounded on the Unified Foundational Ontology), and (iii) propose a representation strategy for modeling competences and their constituent elements leveraging the ArchiMate language, discussing how the proposed models can fit in enterprise competence-based practices.

Traditionally, the organizational IT landscape is split between business Process engines that are developed to handle process execution workloads and Complex Event processing engines designed to search for event correlations in real time to derive actionable insights. For the benefit of process trustworthiness, this work focuses on combining the two engines, resulting in an enriched form of a process log that serves as an input to recently developed eXplainable Artificial Intelligence frameworks, yielding more adequate explanations for process execution outcomes. A designated methodology and a test scheme were created to systematically implement and evaluate our overall approach and its effectiveness in gaining situation-aware explainability. Specifically, we demonstrate our approach using a dataset populated for an illustrative process example, replaying its trace log against the PROTON CEP engine and feeding the result as an input for the SHAP explainer.

How to systematically check constraints in databases other than the standard constraints, e.g., (primary) keys and foreign keys? To solve this important problem in practice, one can use triggers, i.e., special database procedures that automatically start ('fire') upon attempts to modify data in a table. In practice, designing, writing, and maintaining triggers consistently is subtle, difficult, and error-prone, for many reasons: E.g., when multiple triggers are activated 'at the same time' or different trigger-types are mixed, the behaviour can become quite subtle or unpredictable, e.g., regarding their execution-order. Or when triggers invoke external actions, the triggering transaction might not be committed after all. Moreover, keeping triggers consistent when they must be changed is also very error-prone. So, it is very desirable to be able to (re)generate such triggers in a disciplined way. Therefore, our research question is how to manage the proper execution of checking constraints in database practice. To tackle these problems, we systematically assemble the triggers that should be activated 'at the same time' into one trigger. In that way, we keep control over what happens, and when. It keeps the trigger-order platform-independent as well. Using standard templates, we describe a generic way for generating triggers from a declarative specification. We intensively used and evaluated this approach in practice. Constraints between and within tables can be treated in this way. Using triggers, we also propose a straightforward implementation of SQL's assertions. To develop triggers consistently, several design-decisions must be made. E.g., should the trigger stop checking after detecting the first violation or find and mention all violations? And what to do when there is a violation? E.g., a rollback or some 'repair', e.g., a cascading delete? We discuss and answer all these questions.

In our everyday lives, we are exposed to IoT devices that sense the environment and produce raw events. Especially, in smart home scenarios such raw events can be used to detect and monitor human activities and behaviors. This could be of a great help in context that involve fragile people such as elderly or patients, to monitor their condition and support their daily life activities. With our contribution we aim at defining an approach that can be applied on smart-home IoT event logs and support the discovery and monitoring of human routines. In this work we present our approach that relies on the application of community detection algorithms for the discovery of the routines and the adoption of process mining techniques for their inspection. Especially, we report on a first implementation and validation of the approach with respect to a well known IoT event log.

Research on the hot topics and future development trends of recommender system is of great significance for improving the accuracy of recommendation results and saving users' time. A total of 867 SCI and SSCI literatures related to recommender system were selected from the Web of Science database from 2013 to July 2022. The visual knowledge graph analysis tool CiteSpace was used to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics, knowledge basis, research hotspots and frontiers of personalized recommendation technology research from five dimensions: literature growth trend, regional distribution, literature co-citation relationship, keyword co-occurrence and emergence. The participation of Chinese and American researchers are much higher than that of other countries and the exchange and cooperation between countries need to be strengthened. The research focuses on the application of algorithm in recommender system, improvement of collaborative filtering algorithm, model construction, social network and neural network. The research frontiers include feature extraction of users and projects, machine learning and attention mechanism.

From the most prominent fashion conglomerate to the independent market stall trader, stationary retailers face a competitive and increasingly digitalized environment. Especially the rising service competition between pure online and stationary retailers has led to a dramatic change. In line with this development, a decline in inner-city attractiveness can be observed. In the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE)-funded "City Lab Sudwestfalen" project, we counteract this development by improving the situation of stationary retail through developed digitization tools. One of these digitization tools consisted of making a digital store window available to every stationary retailer so that passers-by could perceive offers from the store even if the store itself was closed. The developed digital store window helps local retailers to get more competitive by offering new services that are principal advantages of online retailers. To further improve our artefact, we evaluated the customers' intention to use the digital store window.

Despite the increased interest in virtual and augmented reality in recent years, they are not yet mainstream technologies for everyday use in industry. We argue that a promising approach to facilitate the application of virtual and augmented reality is to combine it with conceptual modeling. In this paper, we thus conducted a systematic literature review on the combination of conceptual modeling with virtual and augmented reality within the last two decades. For this purpose, we reverted to a manual literature search, computational topic modeling, and an expert-driven classification process. This analysis highlights the areas in which such a combination of virtual and augmented reality and conceptual modeling already exists, as well as the aspects that are not yet covered or that would offer opportunities for further research.
