This short paper introduces our ongoing research on the value conversion contingencies of process mining. We believe that this novel perspective on process mining business value complements the existing literature, which is mostly focused on critical success factors and affordances of process mining. We delineate the theoretical background of our proposed framework and briefly discuss the methods that we have chosen to achieve our intended goals.

Conformance checking is a process mining technique that allows verifying the conformance of process instances to a given model. Thus, this technique is predestined to be used in the medical context for the comparison of treatment cases with clinical guidelines. However, medical processes are highly variable, highly dynamic, and complex. This makes the use of imperative conformance checking approaches in the medical domain difficult. Studies show that declarative approaches can better address these characteristics. However, none of the approaches has yet gained practical acceptance. Another challenge are alignments, which usually do not add any value from a medical point of view. For this reason, we investigate in a case study the usability of the HL7 standard Arden Syntax for declarative, rule-based conformance checking and the use of manually modeled alignments. Using the approach, it was possible to check the conformance of treatment cases and create medically meaningful alignments for large parts of a medical guideline.

The significant impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on academia, industry, and government has led to a strong focus on the realization of trustworthy AI systems. Among them, there is an emerging class of process-aware information systems infused with AI, called AI-Augmented business Process Management Systems (ABPMSs), which autonomously unfold and adapt the execution flow of business processes (BPs) through continuous conversation with their human principals, who oversee the system decision. While much research on trustworthy AI has been conducted on devising general-purpose trust recommendations, in this paper we take a first step toward exploring the role of trust to develop trustworthy ABPMSs. Specifically, we assess a relevant subset of trustworthy AI principles against the lifecycle stages of an ABPMS, thus providing a classification framework that identifies to which principles the ABPMS stages should conform. Then, we test the applicability of our framework on a real-world healthcare BP, and we evaluate its reliability through a user study involving 15 academics at the intersection of AI and BPM. The results show a promising consensus that our framework reasonably aligns trustworthy AI principles with the ABPMS stages.

We introduce a novel machine learning framework called Agentic Automated Machine Learning (AutoML), designed to integrate advanced agentic capabilities with traditional AutoML workflows. Agentic AutoML extends the machine learning model development lifecycle by incorporating Large Language Models (LLMs), with statistical analysis, model training, and hyperparameter tuning, etc., all tailored to a simple user experience. The Agentic AutoML builds on standard AutoML machine learning algorithms, including tree-based methods such as random forests and gradient boosting, as well as formula-driven models such as polynomial regression and artificial neural networks, also equipped with automatic statistical analysis, sensitivity assessments, error analysis, and automated report generation. Agentic AutoML architecture offers real-time guidance throughout the entire project workflow, enhancing user interaction and decision-making. By simplifying the application of machine learning algorithms, Agentic AutoML significantly broadens accessibility for users with varying levels of programming skills and machine learning expertise, making it a valuable tool for diverse user groups.

In the dynamic business environment of today, BPM professionals must adapt to cutting-edge technologies, evolving methodologies, and rapidly changing market conditions. Consequently, educational programmes should be sufficiently adaptable to incorporate emerging trends and equip learners with the technical dexterity and process thinking required to effectively lead organisational digital transformation. This adaptability ensures the continued relevance of BPM education and produces graduates that are capable of driving innovation and organisational success. The goal of this study is to share the key features and report on the key lessons learned from our experiences conducting BPM education programmes for over two decades. We argue for the holistic and flexible nature of BPM education by explaining how a variety of learner-focused technical and managerial factors influence our BPM education framework. We underline the necessity for a well-balanced BPM curriculum that covers both technical topics like process mining and automation and managerial topics like process governance and process strategic alignment. We show how industry and students' needs may be balanced in the BPM curriculum to produce job-ready graduates. This study will contribute to the BPM education community's knowledge base by reporting on the critical dimensions of a programme design that encapsulate our shared experiences in delivering a holistic and flexible BPM curriculum to varied learners using different delivery channels. The details discussed will assist BPM experts in designing and delivering a comprehensive curriculum to tackle BPM programme design and its relevance to today's dynamic business environment.

One of the most serious problems of the market-based economies are the instabilities of the economic activity (business cycles), which are sometimes large and lead to recessionary economic crises of different intensities, geographical scopes and durations, and have quite negative consequences for firms. Governments, in order to reduce these negative consequences of economic crises, which can lead to high levels of unemployment and poverty, as well social unrest and political extremism, undertake various interventions, such as large-scale economic stimulus programs. However, in order tomaximize their cost-effectiveness, as well as the economic and social value they generate, it is necessary that they are properly targeted and directed to/focused on the most vulnerable firms to the economic crisis. This paper describes a methodology that can be quite useful for this: it enables the prediction of multi-dimensional patterns of individual firms' vulnerability to economic crisis with respect to the main aspects of their financial situation. For this purpose, Machine Learning algorithms are used, in combination with the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) for increasing their performance, which are trained using open government data from Statistical Authorities. Furthermore, a first application/validation of the proposed methodology is presented, using open data from the Greek Statistical Authority about 363 firms for the severe Greek economic crisis period 2009-2014, which gave satisfactory results.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a rapidly progressing domain, with solutions ranging from large-scale urban infrastructures shared by all citizens, to smaller scale home-based ecosystems targeted to individuals and families. While the choice of functionality in large ecosystems is the responsibility of respective authorities, in home setups smartness implies individualization of automations. In this context, the notion of end-user programming gains increasing attention as a promising way to allow users develop personalized automations by deploying visual programming tools. Since in an IoT ecosystem devices may be invisible, embedded or hardly locatable, sometimes physically inaccessible, testing becomes very challenging, as bringing physical devices to certain states may be either impractical (e.g. window and door sensors) or overall unsafe (e.g. fire or smoke sensors). For this purpose we implemented a virtual testing environment where trials are executed in a protected runtime, not confined to a particular location, disengaged from the physical ecosystem. All our tools run locally in a typical mobile machine and may operate in standalone mode without connecting to real smart devices. Finally, for automations involving time and scheduling, we introduce a virtual time tool, so that testing is done on demand, not following or waiting the actual pace of physical time.

The wide adoption of agile methodologies in software development necessitates an educational approach that prepares students for industry practices. This study aims to explore an agile capstone course, focusing on student learning experiences in teamwork while examining the gender dynamics affecting team roles and engagement. We conducted a comprehensive study of the capstone course "Software Engineering with Project Work" at the University of Oslo, analyzing 27 presentations and interviewing 10 students and two teaching assistants. The course is designed to immerse informatics students of different specializations in agile methodologies and collaborative project work. Our findings suggest that the students learn essential collaboration and technical skills. However, during their final presentations, significant gender differences emerged in the topics discussed: women predominantly spoke about design and process, whereas men focused more on technical aspects such as architecture, technical solutions, and algorithms. Our results underscore the need for educational strategies that promote inclusivity and equal participation in agile software development courses.

business Process Modeling and Notation (BPMN) is a widely used standard workflow language for modeling business processes. However, there is a growing need to integrate data and process models to enable a more holistic view of business processes to reducing implementation time through a clear understanding of the mode, and BPMN has limitations in representing data-related concepts. To address this, we propose an extension to BPMN called DataFlow BPMN (DF-BPMN), which is a low-coding visual solution, for modeling and analyzing the relationship between process and data. Low-code is a growing development approach supported by many platforms. It fills the gap between business and developer. Indeed, it enables quick generation and delivery of business applications with minimum effort. We introduce the Activity DataFlow, an extension of activity that allows zooming into the data manipulated within it, which enable different levels of granularity: control-flow perspective and data perspective. Additionally, we developed a tool for creating a model with the DF-BPMN. Our approach has been evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively, and the results demonstrate that DF-BPMN offers significant advantages over BPMN.
