In many agile software development projects, documentation is often missing, outdated, or written with only a technical perspective. Existing literature recognizes the importance of documentation quality, especially when it comes to its readability for diverse audiences. While recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) offer the potential to tackle these issues, the use of LLMs for software documentation remains unexplored. This paper investigates the use of ChatGPT to improve and adapt documentation to specific audiences. We apply ChatGPT-4 for alternative documentation production and measure the resulting text characteristics and readability. Twenty-five experts from management and development rate these different versions. Results show the suitability of ChatGPT for generating high-quality text for both audiences, with managers benefiting more from an adapted version.

[Background] The game industry faces fierce competition and games are developed on short deadlines and tight budgets. Continuously testing and experimenting with new ideas and features is essential in validating and guiding development toward market viability and success. Such continuous experimentation (CE) requires user data, which is often limited in early development stages. This challenge is further exacerbated for independent (indie) game companies with limited resources. [Aim] We wanted to gain insights into CE practices in pre-release indie game development. [Method] We performed an exploratory interview survey with 10 indie game developers from different companies and synthesised findings through an iterative coding process. [Results] We present a CE framework for game development that highlights key parts to consider when planning and implementing an experiment and note that pre-release experimentation is centred on qualitative data. Time and resource constraints impose limits on the type and extent of experimentation and playtesting that indie companies can perform, e.g. due to limited access to participants, biases and representativeness of the target audience. [Conclusions] Our results outline challenges and practices for conducting experiments with limited user data in early stages of indie game development, and may be of value also for larger game companies, and for software intensive organisations in other industries.

Software startups play a critical role in driving innovation and boosting the economy. However, building these distinguished companies is extremely challenging and often comes with an alarmingly high failure rate. The failure reasons include but are not limited to, product development issues, premature scaling, cash flow mismanagement, and difficulties in securing investment. The current study aims to explore the role of prioritization of financially related requirements in the success of startups. We performed a multiple-case study with 16 software startups. We primarily collected data through 29 semi-structured interviews with these companies and analyzed data using thematic analysis. Our findings reveal a strong correlation between using financially focused requirements prioritization criteria such as estimated revenue, return on investment, time to value, cost of development, and the probability of startup success. We also demonstrate that successful startups prioritize product features with a solid business case, optimizing for time to value. In contrast, startups that neglect the cost of feature development increase the likelihood of failure. We conclude our study by highlighting the relationship between feature requirements prioritization activities and their impact on the financial metrics of startups, such as burn rate and runway.

Our world and many industries, such as healthcare or consulting, are becoming more digital and focused on knowledge workers. In consequence, flexible, knowledge-intensive business processes are increasingly relevant for organizations, and subject to increased interest. Case management languages support the management of knowledge-intensive processes with respect to documentation, analysis, execution, and monitoring. Besides the standard Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN), other languages have been developed, such as fragment-based Case Management (fCM) and PHILharmonic Flows. So far, no structured comparison of their functionalities and applicability has been undertaken. With this work, we compare CMMN, fCM, and PHILharmonic flow with two structured methods: a functional comparison and a user study. We found that fCM offers broad functionality, but CMMN was perceived to be easier for users.

Shaping the future is preceded by imaginations of a desired future. This applies in particular to imaginations in an ethical way. In technology development, future imaginations are traditionally represented through scenarios. Our paper builds on scenario development but supplements it with metaethics, a sub-discipline of ethics dealing with the moral connotations of language, alongside stakeholder theory. Our research design in favor of a good future accounted for various aspects of understanding the good (e.g., functional vs. moral) and different perspectives on the good (from various stakeholders). The interdisciplinary scientific foundations are supplemented in exemplary application with experts from computer science, information systems, ethics, psychology, education, and industry partners. We contribute a transdisciplinary perspective, viewing the future as a task to be shaped and making this tangible in technology development. We provide scientific and methodological guidance to developers, designers, and decision-makers to include ethical considerations in software development.

Work in software development companies has become increasingly hybrid with employees altering days of working in the office with days of working remotely from home. Yet, little is know about the efficiency of such way of working because the current scale of remote working is unprecedented. In this paper, we present our findings from a company-wide survey at Storebrand - a large-scale Norwegian fintech company, focusing on perceived performance. Our analysis of 192 responses shows that most employees report being able to perform the planned tasks. Further, half of respondents perceive to have increased work hours. Through qualitative analysis of open-ended commentaries of respondents we learned that remote working has dual effects on the perceived work hours - some employees report working longer hours and others report having more work time due to efficient use of the time throughout the day. Finally, we recommend managers to discuss and address the concerning habits of employees caused by increased connectivity and inability to stop working, before these lead to burnout and disturbances in the work/life balance.

The integration of virtual reality (VR) into higher education has great potential, such as enhancing the understanding of complex concepts. However, university lecturers struggle to find suitable VR applications due to inadequate filters in app stores. To address this challenge, we developed a concept of a publicly accessible overview suitable for information Systems education, based on metadata. We identified nine VR applications through a systematic search of five common app stores. We classified and coded them by deductively applying an existing taxonomy and inductively deriving new metadata categories. The results are presented as a web app so that university lecturers can search for VR applications tailored to their specific educational needs. For researchers, the defined metadata attributes serve as a foundation for developing web-based platforms where educational VR apps can be effectively searched and filtered according to academic requirements. For practitioners, the web app provides a practical tool to find VR applications that align with their teaching objectives.

Emotion AI is an emerging field of artificial intelligence, intended to be utilized by organizations to manage and monitor employees' emotional states, supporting employee wellbeing and organizational goals. The current paper presents a case study that took place in a Finnish research institute, in which research participants (N = 11) were interviewed about their experiences of working in an Emotion AI environment. Our findings indicate that employees have a positive predisposition towards wellbeing monitoring in the workplace when benefits are perceived firsthand. Concerns however, manifest even in settings where there is existing familiarity with the technology, how it operates, and who is conducting the data collection, these are discussed in the findings. We additionally note that employee concerns can be mitigated via robust organizational policies, transparency and open communication.

In this paper, we report the results of an exploratory study into the efficacy of noise filtering in improving the accuracy of declarative process mining. We apply the double-granularity mixed-dependency filtering algorithm as introduced by [9], to the DisCoveR declarative miner [1], and parameter optimise it to only perform coarse-grained filtering. However, while noise filtering appears promising on the surface, one might worry that the outlier behaviour allowed by declarative models may be wrongly classified as noise and removed. To test the efficacy of noise filtering from both perspectives, we applied DisCoveR with noise filtering to two data sets: the process log collection used in the PDC2020 process discovery contest, emulating "real-world" scenarios;and a synthetic set of logs known to exhibit (non-noise) outlier behaviour. We find that on the contest data sets, noise filtering significantly increases accuracy (on average 23% points), obtaining exploratory evidence that noise filtering may improve declarative miner performance;on the synthetic logs we showcase examples where noise is filtered, while outlier behaviour remains untouched.

General-purpose AI-assisted tools, such as ChatGPT, have recently gained much attention from the media and the general public. That raised questions about in which tasks we can apply such a tool. A good code design is essential for agile software development to keep it ready for change. In this context, identifying which design pattern can be appropriate for a given scenario can be considered an advanced skill that requires a high degree of abstraction and a good knowledge of object orientation. This paper aims to perform an exploratory study investigating the effectiveness of an AI-assisted tool in assisting developers in choosing a design pattern to solve design scenarios. To reach this goal, we gathered 56 existing questions used by teachers and public tenders that provide a concrete context and ask which design pattern would be suitable. We submitted these questions to ChatGPT and analyzed the answers. We found that 93% of the questions were answered correctly with a good level of detail, demonstrating the potential of such a tool as a valuable resource to help developers to apply design patterns and make design decisions.
