The present study aims to develop a reference model that integrates Digital Twins (DTs) and business Process Management (BPM) to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical trials. To achieve this, a five-step method was employed: (1) a collaborative workshop with Clinical Research Center (CRC) managers, scientists, and principal investigators (PIs);(2) validation of stakeholder needs;(3) conceptualization of a DT use case;(4) development of a synergetic reference model;and (5) evaluation of this model with a clinical research specialist. The results identified key business needs from various stakeholders, proposed a DT solution to address these needs, and created a reference model that integrates BPM and DT perspectives. This integrated approach addresses challenges such as ensuring continuous and interoperable data capture, motivating systematic data collection, and facilitating data transfer between CRCs, thus improving stakeholder satisfaction in clinical trials. The developed reference model and the identified research challenges provide a foundation for future research and practical implementation of DTs and BPM in clinical trials. This study advances the field by bridging DT and BPM frameworks, offering a comprehensive approach to managing clinical trial processes, and demonstrating the significant potential of these technologies to improve clinical research efficiency and effectiveness.

Agile methods are state of the art in software development. Companies worldwide apply agile to counter the dynamics of the markets. We know, that various factors like culture influence the successful application of agile methods in practice and that sucess varies from company to company. To counter these problems, we combine two causal models presented in literature: The Agile Practices Impact Model and the Model of Cultural Impact. In this paper, we want to better understand the two facets of factors in agile: Those influencing their application and those impacting the results when applying them. This papers core contribution is the Agile Influence and Impact Model, describing the factors influencing agile elements and the impact on specific characteristics in a systematic manner.

The availability of pertinent, accurate, and useful information has become essential to people and organisations in their collaborations with others. Enterprise architecture provides stakeholder-oriented frameworks and methods supporting producing and consuming information products that satisfy collaborating stakeholders' concerns. However, while stakeholder analysis suggests identifying relationships between stakeholder and their practices, this has not yet been incorporated in the enterprise architecture standard ISO 42010 and frameworks such as TOGAF. The current lack of support for relationships between stakeholder practices limits analysis and right-sizing of the use of information products in a multi-stakeholder environment, where stakeholders collaborate while having different, possibly divergent, interests, work to be done, goals, and information needs over time. This paper presents a situation viewpoint that can be used to extend stakeholder analysis in enterprise architecture framework with relationships to improve the understanding of why and how information products are used in constellations of stakeholders where each stakeholder plays a role. The situation viewpoint aims to improve the relevance, design, tailoring, effectiveness, evolution, and evaluation of information products such as models.

Robotic process automation (RPA) is a process automation technology that mimics human behaviour using software agents called 'bots'. This study aims to explore one of the emerging organisational challenges of RPA use-process knowledge loss (PKL), which materialises when bots start performing repetitive and rule-based tasks, replacing employees. PKL can negatively impact an organisation's continuous improvement of processes, productivity, and competitiveness. Thus, it is a critical area that requires scholarly attention. There is a dearth of studies focusing on knowledge loss issues in RPA. Hence, no empirical models or frameworks exist to explain RPA's impact on PKL. To address this research gap, we first reviewed RPA literature. Then, the findings were further investigated using seven RPA expert interviews. The RPA experts confirmed the existence of PKL in the context of RPA and explained the influencing factors. We present an empirically supported conceptual model illustrating how RPA impacts PKL, which goes beyond highlighting the phenomenon as a process-related or knowledge-management challenge. The conceptual model captures ten factors, including three positive factors that mitigate PKL (i.e., top management support, process expertise, and RPA-BPM integration), four negative factors that contribute to PKL (i.e., employee turnover, knowledge hiding, automation complacency, and continuous process redesign), and three factors with both positive and negative impacts (i.e., employee redeployment, RPA governance, and task division). These findings contribute to the knowledge base on RPA associated with PKL. This model may assist organisations in devising strategies to mitigate RPA-related PKL.

Aligned with the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources (United Nations, 2015), coastal cities are increasingly adopting smart marine technologies such as autonomous sensor networks to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable marine management. This systematic literature review examines the integration of these technologies in coastal cities, emphasizing their role and effectiveness in IT-driven mitigation strategies for marine environmental administration while also exploring key barriers, enablers, and stakeholder perceptions regarding the implementation of smart marine environments. Despite the growing prevalence of marine ecological issues, there remains a notable lack of empirical evidence demonstrating the real-world effectiveness of these technologies. Additionally, comprehensive studies exploring stakeholder perceptions and addressing technological integration challenges are limited. This review aims to address these gaps by synthesizing existing research, identifying key barriers and enablers, and providing recommendations for future studies to enhance the adoption and effectiveness of smart marine technologies in coastal cities. To achieve this, a comprehensive search was conducted in ProQuest, EBSCO, and Scopus databases, adhering to PRISMA guidelines, and including 62 peer-reviewed research articles published from 2014 onwards. The review identified significant contributions of autonomous sensor networks in enhancing IT-driven mitigation strategies. Key barriers to implementation include technological limitations, excessive costs, and lack of stakeholder engagement. Conversely, enablers included technological advancements, supportive policy frameworks, and increased stakeholder awareness. To illustrate, advancements in sensor accuracy and data processing capabilities have shown potential in improving real-time environmental monitoring.

In the last decade, the term instance-spanning constraint has been introduced in the process mining field to refer to constraints that span multiple process instances of one or several processes of particular relevance, in this setting, is checking whether process executions comply with constraints of interest, which at runtime calls for suitable monitoring techniques. Even though event data are often stored in some sort of database, there is a lack of database-oriented approaches to tackle compliance checking and monitoring of (instance-spanning) constraints. In this paper, we fill this gap by showing how well-established technology from database query processing can be effectively used for this purpose. We propose to define an instance-spanning constraint through an ensemble of four database queries that retrieve the satisfying, violating, satisfying-pending, and violating-pending cases of the constraint. In this context, the problem of compliance monitoring then becomes an application of techniques for incremental view maintenance, which is well-developed in database query processing. In this paper, we argue for our approach in detail, and, as a proof of concept, present an experimental validation using the DBToaster incremental database query engine.

Open source (OS) foundations are non-profit organizations that support open-source software development projects. OS foundations can be categorized based on their membership and governance structures. This study focuses on vendor-led and user-led OS foundations operating in the healthcare sector. The study has two objectives. The first objective is to explore the similarities and differences of vendor-led and user-led OS foundations. The second objective is to explore and define governance practices applied in these foundations to achieve success. To address these objectives, we performed multiple-case study research, with the openEHR Foundation and the RACOON consortium as our cases. We performed interviews with key stakeholders and applied thematic analysis to derive the results. We present differences and similarities of these foundations with respect to membership and organizational structure. We also present members' motivation to engage with these foundations. Furthermore, we identify and explain 32 governance practices applied in nine contexts related to OS foundations in the healthcare sector.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is often considered a short-term solution that bridges technology gaps temporarily. However, it is no longer the choice of automation technology when backend automation becomes readily available. We collect insights from thirteen interviews and two literature reviews to investigate the migration from frontend automation with RPA towards backend automation with APIs. This paper explores how the robots need to be designed and prioritized so that they can be easily replaceable in the order that allows an organization to benefit the most from a change in the automation infrastructure. Findings encompass requirements for the design of migration-ready RPA bots, challenges to overcome, and selection criteria for prioritization. We integrate these results into business Process Management (BPM) from a methodological as well as architectural perspective. The practicability of our findings is backed by a prototypical implementation with which we showcase the migration from frontend to backend automation in an organizational setting from the telecommunications industry.

Distributed transactions that span multiple microservices are more and more realized using the Saga Pattern. However, in case the interaction between microservices fails due to an Service Level Objective (SLO) violation, e.g., insufficient availability, the executed business logic gets significantly impacted when a saga compensates already executed operations. Unfortunately, analyzing such impacts manually and reporting found issues is too slow for modern systems. Therefore, we present Dromi, a model-based tool that traces the impacts of SLO violations across a microservice architecture and, if a violation results in compensations caused by sagas, creates an issue report about the violation's location and resulting impacts on the business processes. The target audience of this demonstration includes architects and developers, who will be shown how such impacts are detected automatically by Dromi.

Remote work is commonplace nowadays, with software startups actively embracing it. However, remote work poses various challenges, among which team challenges are prominent and highly relevant to early-stage software startups, since effective team collaboration is one key factor for them to operate and succeed in uncertain environments. Challenges faced by early-stage software startup teams are less explored, especially in remote work settings. This research will propose a design framework to address the challenges faced by early-stage software startup teams in remote work settings. This research uses multi-case study to facilitate a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. Expected significance of findings lies in the identification of unique challenges and key practices to tackle those challenges, offering actionable insights and innovative solutions.
