Software plays a crucial role in promoting sustainability, yet there is no standardized approach for embedding sustainability into Scrum agile software development process. With many systems now built using agile methods, integrating sustainability into these practices is essential. This paper presents an action research conducted with an industry partner to demonstrate how sustainability concerns can be incorporated into the Scrum agile framework using previously published sustainability elicitation techniques (e.g., we used the Sustainability Awareness Framework for this action research). The goal of this study is to guide software development practitioners in making sustainability-conscious design and development decisions. Our findings show that even practitioners with limited prior sustainability knowledge, were able to successfully adapt their agile processes to integrate systematic treatment of sustainability concerns.

State-of-the-art approaches for managing Big Data pipelines assume their anatomy is known by design and expressed through adhoc Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs), with insufficient knowledge of the dark data involved in the pipeline execution. Dark data is data that organizations acquire during regular business activities but is not used to derive insights or for decision-making. The recent literature on Big Data processing agrees that a new breed of Big Data pipeline discovery (BDPD) solutions can mitigate this issue by solely analyzing the event log that keeps track of pipeline executions over time. Relying on well-established process mining techniques, BDPD can reveal fact-based insights into how data pipelines transpire and access dark data. However, to date, a standard format to specify the concept of Big Data pipeline execution in an event log does not exist, making it challenging to apply process mining to achieve the BDPD task. To address this issue, in this paper we formalize a universally applicable reference data model to conceptualize the core properties and attributes of a data pipeline execution. We provide an implementation of the model as an extension to the XES interchange standard for event logs, demonstrate its practical applicability in a use case involving a data pipeline for managing digital marketing campaigns, and evaluate its effectiveness in uncovering dark data manipulated during several pipeline executions.

We have developed a new approach for teaching business process analysis and optimization based on a digital case study. The case study has been elaborated in cooperation with a production company for compression wear, guided by the concept of action research and the ambition that students can virtually immerse themselves into the company's order-to-cash process. For this purpose, associated process documentation, stations of an order flow, interviews with employees and time stamps of process instances have been made available for students on the educational platform Moodle. The students cooperate in teams analyzing and optimizing the order-to-cash process with the objective to qualify for a consecutive consulting assignment. To gradually increase the level of complexity the students are guided through three phases of analysis building upon one another, being enabled by an interactive guide implemented with the Moodle plugin H5P. The fourth and final phase constitutes an open challenge in which the teams leverage all the information previously collected to identify optimization potential. They summarize their recommendations in a report addressed to a company representative. Feedback of students confirms a well-designed learning path as well as high practical relevance of this new education environment. The structure of the case applies action research at different difficulty levels and can directly be transferred to other companies regardless their business activity or industry. In a planned revision it will be examined how the Moodle plug-in "Level up" can be used to intensify the gamification aspect throughout the assignment.

The number of different devices connected to the Internet is constantly increasing. There is a high demand for these devices, and their benefits are clear for certain groups of users. Some of these devices, the Internet of Things (IoT), are part of smart homes, making the residents' everyday lives easier and safer. In general, the security of IoT devices is constantly improving, but overall, they are still full of vulnerabilities. The purpose of this paper is to explain the most significant threats to IoT devices in the smart home environment and propose a number of different ways to eliminate these threats and vulnerabilities in smart home IoT devices. It is important to acknowledge that both the manufacturers of IoT devices and their users are responsible for taking care of the vulnerabilities.

Change adoption and management are paramount to organizations' operations and continuous service delivery. Analysis of the extant literature reveals challenges organizations face while adopting new technologies within their information technology (IT) infrastructures. The paper presents an empirical study featuring semi-structured interviews with IT practitioners (from 13 IT organizations operating in Finland) while considering, (i) why organizations adopt the latest technologies, (ii) what challenges arise by adopting the latest technology, and (iii) how the organization makes the adoption process successful. In line with these questions, 14 motivational drivers, 24 challenges, and 12 success enablers were identified. In addition, the paper also presents a conceptual framework of identified drivers, challenges, and success enablers, that govern the successful adoption of the latest technologies. The framework also helps practitioners to understand the technology adoption process by analyzing the motives, identifying the challenges, and overcoming challenges through success enablers.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has made great progress. However, despite impressive results, modern data-driven AI systems are often very difficult to understand, challenging their use in software business and prompting the emergence of the explainable AI (XAI) field. This paper explores how machine learning (ML) students explain their models and draws implications for practice from this. Data was collected from ML master students, who were given a two-part assignment. First they developed a model predicting insurance claims based on an existing data set, then they received a request for explanation of insurance premiums in accordance with the GDPR right to meaningful information and had to come up with such an explanation. The students also peer-graded each other's explanations. Analyzing this data set and comparing it to responses from actual insurance firms from a previous study illustrates some potential pitfalls-narrow technical focus and offering mere data dumps. There were also some promising directions-feature importance, graphics, and what-if scenarios-where the software business practice could benefit from being inspired by the students. The paper is concluded with a reflection about the importance of multiple kinds of expertise and team efforts for making the most of XAI in practice.

Currently, all public development initiatives are expected to consider environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, social sustainability, and, more broadly, the UN's sustainable development goals. This requirement also applies to periodically renewable or replaceable IT systems and services. However, little is known about how the development goals are actually addressed in IT. As public sector organizations are obliged to acquire new systems through public procurement procedures, we collected all Finnish ICT-related calls for tenders from a public repository in May 2024. By qualitatively analyzing 106 calls for tenders, we aimed to understand how the sustainability goals appear and are addressed in public ICT acquisitions. Surprisingly, only 7,55% of the calls mentioned the goals indirectly in their descriptions. Even more surprising was the absence of generic reasons and motives for the renewal initiative. Only 9,43% of the calls clearly stated the objective of the system renewal or provision. These low numbers have several consequences. First, they illustrate that sustainability goals are not considered in the IT field in practice;They are dead letters there. Second, the absence of explicit motives for the system renewal makes it challenging to design, develop and implement the system and reach and assess whether the initiative has reached its goals. This could be one of the main reasons why so many IT projects are said to fail - not knowing why they were developed makes it impossible to assess whether they have reached their targets.

Undoubtedly, even though the blockchain constitutes a big opportunity for the organizations of all the industries, the virtues of this technology cannot be harnessed without an adequate level of managerial skills. Despite the emphasis that has been given on the impact of top management support on blockchain adoption throughout the literature, there is shortage of research papers exploring the blockchain-related knowledge that the technology managers should obtain. This study comprises an initial attempt to cover this literature gap by explicating the adoption of blockchain through the lens of the five technology management processes proposed within the Gregory's framework (identification, selection, acquisition, exploitation, protection). By performing a literature review, this research paper detects twenty-three critical strategic questions and segments them into the five processes of technology management. In addition, regarding every single question, it presents possible answers deriving from the bibliography. From the academics' side, this study suggests a synthesis of multiple issues pertaining to the wide topic of blockchain adoption, while it comprises the first step to develop the theory of the necessary blockchain-related knowledge from the angle of technology managers. From the practical point of view, it informs technology managers about several questions that they will have to respond to during the forthcoming blockchain-based era and instruct them on how to make the most suitable options. Being informed about diverse issues around blockchain implementation, the technology managers can considerably contribute to the success of enterprise blockchain projects.

Despite the growth of the digital economy in many developing countries, rural communities are still marginalized in the current digital business ecosystems, which are highly urban-oriented. To address this issue, we have proposed in our previous works a reference architecture of a digital platform based on the principles of service orientation. In this paper, we evaluate the real-world applicability of the proposed reference architecture by using a technical action research approach in the West Java province of Indonesia. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of implementing the proposed architecture in a real-world setting, and analyzes its effectiveness in improving the economic climate in rural areas.

Process mining leverages execution traces within an organisation's IT systems to gain insights into its processes. Despite being a mature discipline in academia and industry, setting up process mining pipelines is still a complex task and involves programming, manual steps, and considerations of privacy and intellectual property. This paper introduces a platform based on a distributed architecture that helps define, deploy, and execute process mining pipelines across organisations. The requirements for this distributed architecture and platform are derived from a set of process mining scenarios, whose relevance is validated through a survey. Furthermore, this paper introduces a prototype for an initial version of the platform, demonstrating feasibility and supporting the specified requirements.
