We have developed a new approach for teaching business process analysis and optimization based on a digital case study. The case study has been elaborated in cooperation with a production company for compression wear, guided by the concept of action research and the ambition that students can virtually immerse themselves into the company's order-to-cash process. For this purpose, associated process documentation, stations of an order flow, interviews with employees and time stamps of process instances have been made available for students on the educational platform Moodle. The students cooperate in teams analyzing and optimizing the order-to-cash process with the objective to qualify for a consecutive consulting assignment. To gradually increase the level of complexity the students are guided through three phases of analysis building upon one another, being enabled by an interactive guide implemented with the Moodle plugin H5P. The fourth and final phase constitutes an open challenge in which the teams leverage all the information previously collected to identify optimization potential. They summarize their recommendations in a report addressed to a company representative. Feedback of students confirms a well-designed learning path as well as high practical relevance of this new education environment. The structure of the case applies action research at different difficulty levels and can directly be transferred to other companies regardless their business activity or industry. In a planned revision it will be examined how the Moodle plug-in "Level up" can be used to intensify the gamification aspect throughout the assignment.

Currently, all public development initiatives are expected to consider environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, social sustainability, and, more broadly, the UN's sustainable development goals. This requirement also applies to periodically renewable or replaceable IT systems and services. However, little is known about how the development goals are actually addressed in IT. As public sector organizations are obliged to acquire new systems through public procurement procedures, we collected all Finnish ICT-related calls for tenders from a public repository in May 2024. By qualitatively analyzing 106 calls for tenders, we aimed to understand how the sustainability goals appear and are addressed in public ICT acquisitions. Surprisingly, only 7,55% of the calls mentioned the goals indirectly in their descriptions. Even more surprising was the absence of generic reasons and motives for the renewal initiative. Only 9,43% of the calls clearly stated the objective of the system renewal or provision. These low numbers have several consequences. First, they illustrate that sustainability goals are not considered in the IT field in practice;They are dead letters there. Second, the absence of explicit motives for the system renewal makes it challenging to design, develop and implement the system and reach and assess whether the initiative has reached its goals. This could be one of the main reasons why so many IT projects are said to fail - not knowing why they were developed makes it impossible to assess whether they have reached their targets.

Large language models (LLMs) have disrupted knowledge work in many application areas. Accordingly, the business Process Management (BPM) community has started to explore how LLMs can be leveraged, resulting in a variety of promising research directions across the BPM lifecycle. Despite rapid adoption in practice and strong research interest, however, little is known about the actual design of BPM systems that leverage LLMs in organizational contexts. In this paper, we report on design science-based research in collaboration with a large multinational company to design a BPM system that leverages LLMs for process knowledge extraction from diverse enterprise content. Based on the development of our prototype, we observe that LLMs provide the means to organize and generate process knowledge independent of specific forms of representation. We present a conceptual framework that describes the role of LLMs in generating process knowledge from diverse input formats and, in turn, making it available in diverse output formats via prompting, resulting in representation-agnostic process knowledge. We also highlight implications of our study for BPM research and practice.

Process mining leverages execution traces within an organisation's IT systems to gain insights into its processes. Despite being a mature discipline in academia and industry, setting up process mining pipelines is still a complex task and involves programming, manual steps, and considerations of privacy and intellectual property. This paper introduces a platform based on a distributed architecture that helps define, deploy, and execute process mining pipelines across organisations. The requirements for this distributed architecture and platform are derived from a set of process mining scenarios, whose relevance is validated through a survey. Furthermore, this paper introduces a prototype for an initial version of the platform, demonstrating feasibility and supporting the specified requirements.

Despite the growth of the digital economy in many developing countries, rural communities are still marginalized in the current digital business ecosystems, which are highly urban-oriented. To address this issue, we have proposed in our previous works a reference architecture of a digital platform based on the principles of service orientation. In this paper, we evaluate the real-world applicability of the proposed reference architecture by using a technical action research approach in the West Java province of Indonesia. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of implementing the proposed architecture in a real-world setting, and analyzes its effectiveness in improving the economic climate in rural areas.

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has yet to fully capitalise on the potential to develop AI systems through collaboration between system developers and data scientists, especially when they belong to different organisations. We studied how using a marketplace creates value in such value chains by allowing organisations to advertise and share AI assets like data and models and enable multi-party development of AI systems while protecting these assets. The paper describes an embedded multi-case study of a marketplace under development, the Bonseyes marketplace. The cases were a collaboration between universities, a large company outsourcing data science, and a small business offering AI models as products. Value creation was linked to reduced development time, streamlined product communication, and protection of shared assets. However, participants required data protection concerns to be addressed, as well as marketplace maturity. The marketplace created value with clear goals for developing an AI system and supporting tools, templates, and examples. Our study benefits researchers wanting to advance AI systems development by offering rich examples of how a marketplace can enable multi-party collaborations.

Optimizing organizational operations with respect to different decisions and to achieve a variety of objectives has been thoroughly studied. Examples include deciding which transport order to assign to which truck in order to minimize costs or deciding on how much stock to keep of a particular product in order to balance costs and delivery reliability. business processes bring unique challenges to optimization problems, due to the complexity and uncertainty of the interdependencies between their tasks. The business process optimization competition presented such an optimization problem. Participants had to develop an algorithm that decided when to admit patients for hospital treatment, with various uncertain treatment tasks ahead. Eight different algorithms were submitted and compared to identify the most effective types of algorithm for business process optimization. Four algorithms outperformed the heuristic benchmark, with two of these being reinforcement learning algorithms. This suggests that reinforcement learning is a promising approach for optimizing business processes.

Over the years, the use of gamification in teaching different agile approaches become more popular. Many proposed solutions are based on moving tasks on physical or virtual boards. Some connect task realisation with the performance of simple, repetitive manual tasks. The approach described in this paper utilises the activity of drawing simple icons on post-its to mimic the active and creative aspect of e.g. software development. The described game allows for teaching multiple practices used in Scrum software development connected to software quality and requirements, including the importance of the Definition of Done, acceptance criteria and continuous improvement based on Sprint Review and Retrospective. Initial results are promising while working with students with no or almost no previous understanding of the software development process. Additionally, the game can be easily modified or extended to help with teaching other aspects of the Scrum software development process.

Developers use different means to document the security concerns of their code. Because of all of these opportunities, they may forget where the information is stored, or others may not be aware of it, and leave it unmaintained for so long that it becomes obsolete, if not useless. In this work, we analyzed different sources of code documentation from four large-scale, real-world, open-source projects in an industrial setting to understand where developers report their security concerns. In particular, we manually inspected 2.559 instances taken from source code comments, commit messages, and issue trackers. Overall, we found that developers prefer to document security concerns in source code comments and issue trackers. We also found that the longer the comments stay unfixed, the more likely they remain unfixed. Thus, to create awareness among developers, we implemented a pipeline to remind them about the introduction or removal of comments pointing to a security problem.

Agile and technical debt management should have a symbiotic relationship, as technical debt was conceived as a metaphor (or tool) to balance the benefits of taking shortcuts for early release and user feedback with the responsibility of 'repairing' the effects of these trade-offs. Agile processes provide the necessary flexibility to achieve this balance. However, in reality, feature greed often takes over, making it difficult for development teams to ensure that technical debt is repaid. This paper discusses experiences and best practices to address Technical Debt in an Agile context.
