The wide adoption of agile methodologies in software development necessitates an educational approach that prepares students for industry practices. This study aims to explore an agile capstone course, focusing on student learning experiences in teamwork while examining the gender dynamics affecting team roles and engagement. We conducted a comprehensive study of the capstone course "Software Engineering with Project Work" at the University of Oslo, analyzing 27 presentations and interviewing 10 students and two teaching assistants. The course is designed to immerse informatics students of different specializations in agile methodologies and collaborative project work. Our findings suggest that the students learn essential collaboration and technical skills. However, during their final presentations, significant gender differences emerged in the topics discussed: women predominantly spoke about design and process, whereas men focused more on technical aspects such as architecture, technical solutions, and algorithms. Our results underscore the need for educational strategies that promote inclusivity and equal participation in agile software development courses.

Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) improves the collaboration between developers and stakeholders following agile software development practices. Acceptance Test-Driven Development (ATDD) is an extension of BDD where requirements are accompanied by automated acceptance tests, translating functional acceptance criteria linked to requirements. While BDD and ATDD have been successfully applied in industry, few universities report on teaching BDD and ATDD principles as part of their curriculum. However, there is a need for education providers to teach industry-relevant practices so that junior developers' skills are better aligned to industry's expectations. Therefore, we report on how BDD and ATDD techniques have been taught in a two-semester software engineering project, including (i) the lack of observed evidence on the implications of applying BDD and ATDD on the functional suitability of software products, (ii) the lack of engagement with BDD and ATDD from students, and (ii) recommendations to educators to improve students' engagement with these practices.

Since the introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT, the underlying technology of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) has gained tremendous interest in academia. Researchers began experimenting with LLMs' capabilities in various domains, including business process modeling. While these works indicate a promising potential of LLMs for this task, they do not consider the number of tokens of the prompting strategies and output formats. However, the token amount is the number one cost driver for LLM-based process modeling. In addition, an efficient representation of the conversation state has not been addressed so far. This paper addresses these concerns and introduces and evaluates an approach for efficient LLM-based conversational process modeling. We have implemented our approach as a publicly available online tool. In our experiments, we observed average input token reductions of 94% compared to an existing tool while maintaining even better levels of correctness. Furthermore, a user study at a public science fair indicates solid numbers for the tool's usefulness.

User participation and user feedback are essential to the success of new product development (NPD). Development teams use user feedback to derive requirement engineering artifacts, such as user scenarios, user stories, concept mindmaps, and user personas, to guide them in identifying and addressing a particular user problem. However, finding enough user participation to collect meaningful feedback is challenging, and less attention has been given to addressing this. In this paper, we propose Active Personas (APs), fictional users capable of generating contextual feedback through an interactive multi-modal interaction, such as text, voice, image, and video. APs enable development teams to gather feedback on their solutions through iterative internal experimentation. APs use generative artificial intelligence to enable dynamic multi-modal interaction and utilize user personas to generate contextual feedback. We aim to conduct a series of studies to further validate APs by applying the design science approach as guidance. We plan to develop an initial prototype of APs and conduct studies in a more controlled setting using open-source or completed projects to validate APs. Later, we will transition to ongoing projects in various types and domains.

Although large-scale agile software development increasingly is being organized in product areas, little research has to date looked into the skills needed for central roles to succeed with software product management (SPM) in a large-scale setting. Addressing this research gap, this paper provides insights into the skills and competencies deemed essential among Product Managers and Product Owners in ScanBank, a Scandinavian fintech organization counting over 10,000 employees. Our findings reveal that establishing and maintaining social networks are found to be paramount for successfully performing SPM-related tasks in a large-scale agile organizational context. We utilized a model for social capital consisting of three different dimensions to analyze our data material and highlight the value of social capabilities in enhancing collaboration and efficiency within large-scale agile SPM.

Recently, blockchain has attracted much attention from industries, due to its good characteristics such as decentralization and tamper proofing. To ensure that sensitive transaction data are not disclosed to the public, many privacy protection methods have been proposed for blockchain, which generally conflicts with regulatory requirements. To resolve such a conflict, in this paper we propose a privacy-preserving account-based blockchain system which supports auditing on transactions. The proposed system protects the privacy of a transaction via homomorphic encryption. The validity of the transaction is guaranteed via zero-knowledge proof. Especially, details of a transaction are presented in form of ciphertexts on the public ledger, which can be decrypted by regulatory authorities. We have implemented a demo of the proposed system using the Substrate framework. Simulation results show that the system has acceptable performance.

Semi-autonomous cyber security ("cyber") operations require effective communication between a human operator and the underlying cyber systems that carry out the mission. We show a goal-driven approach to specifying mission objectives of such systems, where the system has controlled autonomy to refine the goals into executable plans. An ontology aligns goal decomposition and data representation with human-level concepts, and probabilistic extensions of Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) agent architectures allow dealing with uncertainty about the agent's state and the effects of its actions. Our framework effectively automates parts of cyber operations while conveying the state of operations to a human operator. A case study from the cyber operations domain demonstrates that this approach can outperform the traditional BDI agent approach while requiring minimal additional information by the agent programmer.

Software systems execute tasks that depend on different types of resources. The variability of resources hinders the ability of software systems to execute important tasks. For example, in automated warehouses, malfunctioning robots could delay product deliveries and cause financial losses due to customer dissatisfaction. Resource-driven adaptation addresses the negative implications of resource variability. Hence, this paper presents a task modelling notation called SERIES, which is used for representing task models that support resource-driven adaptation in software systems. SERIES is complemented by a tool that enables software practitioners to create and modify task models. SERIES was evaluated through a study with software practitioners. The participants of this study were asked to explain and create task models and then provide their feedback on the usability of SERIES and the clarity of its semantic constructs. The results showed a very good user performance in explaining and creating task models using SERIES. These results were reflected in the feedback of the participants and the activities that they performed using SERIES.

Enterprise architecture (EA) modeling gives an opportunity to have an overview of the enterprise architecture supporting business-IT alignment within the rapidly changing environment. Visual representation of enterprise architecture models is appropriate for interpretation by humans. Machines, however, cannot interpret labels associated with the model element, as well as its domain-specific concepts. To make EA models machine-interpretable, a graphical representation of models shall be connected to domain knowledge. This research demonstrates an approach to enriching the EA model of a medical institution with healthcare domain knowledge. Evaluation of the developed solution proves that a human and a machine could equally understand the ontology-based EA model.

Process understanding is essential to the business Process Management (BPM) lifecycle for diverse strategic organizational projects. However, in many companies, the processes are still informal and unstructured. In this scenario, no process models are available, and all the knowledge about the processes remains on the people involved in their execution. Thus, it is necessary to engage stakeholders to share their expertise in current processes. Additionally, in the context of complex processes involving different sectors of the organization, stakeholder participation represents one more challenge. In this context, this research argues the use of the framework called Meet2Map that aims to promote identifying, discovering, and modeling processes involving participants based on collaborative interactions and human-centered design principles. This study is an evolution of the results published at the ICEIS 2022 conference, focusing on the conception of Meet2Map and the first case study concerning an ERP project. From the second case study in an authentic organizational environment, the results revealed the adequacy of the proposal, with very positive evaluations regarding the planned objectives. From both studies, a list of good practices could be identified, helping managers and process analysts apply Meet2Map in their BPM projects.
