Ecosystems are an important aspect of today's software business, and can be beneficial to companies that can create and organize such ecosystems around their products. Unfortunately, creating such ecosystems is not an easy task. The value blueprint is a tool created by Adner, that allows a company to identify the different types of risks to be faced during the establishment of an ecosystem. In this paper we describe a case study conducted to assess the value blueprint as an effective tool to help in the design of new ecosystems. This case study is based on data about the Apple Watch. We report our evaluation of the value blueprint tool and provide recommendations for practitioners interested in establishing their own ecosystems and researchers interested in the design of ecosystems.

Nowadays, one of the main challenges for Supply Chains is the management of disruptions and uncertainties. Turbulence and instability have now to be considered as the 'normal' situation. Future Supply Chains should be able to cope with this new context to stay competitive. To solve this issue, new approaches and technologies have to be designed in order to improve the agility capability of supply networks. To contribute to this new problem statement, as a part of the H2020 C2NET research project, this paper proposes a concrete research framework. The research aim consists in defining precise research orientations in one hand, and structuring a set of technical tasks able to result in an agile and collaborative platform on the other hand. Basically, the main components of the research framework are presented and the expected impacts are discussed.

In complex organizations business Processes tends to exist in different variants that typically share objectives and part of their structure. In recent years it has been recognized that the explicit modeling of variability can brings important benefits to organizations that can more easily reflect on their behavior and more efficiently structure their activities and processes. Particularly interesting in this respect is the situation of the Public Administration that delivers the same service using many different and replicated processes. The management of such complexity ask for methods explicitly supporting the modeling of variability aspects for business Processes. In this paper we present a novel notation to describe variability of business Processes and an approach to successively derive process variants. The notation takes inspiration from feature modeling approaches and has been implemented in a real tool using the ADOxx platform. The notation, and the corresponding approach, seems particularly suitable for the Public Administration context, and it has been actually experimented in a complex real scenario.

The benefits and barriers that software development companies face when moving beyond agile development practices are identified in a multiple-case study in five Finnish companies. The practices that companies need to adopt when moving towards innovation experiment systems are recognised. The background of the study is the Stairway to Heaven (StH) model that describes the path that many software development companies take when advancing their development practices. The development practices in each case are investigated and analysed in relation to the StH model. At first the results of the analysis strengthened the validity of the StH model as a path taken by software development companies to advance their development practices. Based on the findings, the StH model was extended with a set of additional practices and their adoption levels for each step of the model. The extended model was validated in five case companies.

Software startups are newly created companies designed to grow fast. The uncertainty of new markets and development of cutting-edge technologies pose challenges different from those faced by more mature companies. In this study, we focus on exploring the key challenges that early-stage software startups have to cope with from idea conceptualization to the first time to market. To investigate the key challenges, we used a mixed-method research approach which includes both a large-scale survey of 5389 responses and an in-depth multiple-case study. The initial findings reveal that thriving in technology uncertainty and acquiring the first paying customer are among the top challenges, perceived and experienced by early-stage software startups. Our study implies deeper issues that early-stage software startups need to address effectively in validating the problem-solution fit.

The paper describes the processes of forensic laboratory and its process-oriented problems. The main goal of this paper is to develop a new process framework for managing and optimization of the operation of the digital forensics laboratory. Based on the interviews with managers and experts the new process model is proposed and a compared with widely used model of Beebe and Clark. SIPOC method and flowchart diagrams are used for visualization of the new process model. Each phase of the forensics laboratory process is elaborated into separate flowchart diagrams. New proposed process framework includes activities connected to business aspect of the process and interaction with the customer not included in Beebe's and Clark's model. The new proposed model can be used as an input for a more detailed general process map of digital forensic laboratory.

There are various software size measurement methods that are used in various stages of a software project lifecycle. Although functional size measurement methods and lines of code measurements are widely practiced, none of these methods explicitly position themselves in problem or solution domain. This results in unreliable measurement results as abstraction levels of the measured artifacts vary greatly. Unreliable measurement results hinder usage of size data in effort estimation and benchmarking studies. Furthermore, there exists no widely accepted measurement method for solution domain concepts other than lines of code, such as software design. In this study, an approach is defined to distinguish problem and solution domains for a software project and a software size measurement methodology for solution domain is proposed based on software design sizes.

Software-intensive product companies are becoming increasingly data-driven as can be witnessed by the big data and Internet of Things trends. However, optimally prioritizing customer needs in a mass-market context is notoriously difficult. While most companies use product owners or managers to represent the customer, research shows that the prioritization made is far from optimal. In earlier research, we have coined the term 'the open loop problem' to characterize this challenge. For instance, research shows that up to half of all the features in products are never used. This paper presents a conceptual model that emphasizes the need for combining qualitative feedback in early stages of development with quantitative customer observation in later stages of development. Our model is inductively derived from an 18 months close collaboration with six large global software-intensive companies.

Recent advances in digital technologies are enabling enterprises to undergo transformations for streamlining business processes, offering new products and services, expanding in new areas, and even changing their business models. Current enterprise architecture frameworks are used for analysis, design, and strategy execution, helping an enterprise transition from an as-is state to a to-be state. However emerging trends suggest the need for richer models to support on-going adaptations and periodic transformations. The scope of enterprise architecture modeling needs to be expanded to include the multiple levels of dynamics that exist within any enterprise, the sense-and-respond pathways that drive change at operational and strategic levels, and the tension between centralized control and local autonomy.

We present a novel architecture of a knowledge management system meeting the end-user software engineering requirements, thus empowering the knowledge worker to eliminate such intermediaries as system analysts and application programmers. Advantages of direct representation of user requirements in executable knowledge management application specifications, as well as the resulting system agility and ease of maintenance are highlighted. The state-of-the-art in the end-user software engineering area pertaining to the knowledge management systems realm comprises information about the on-going research and development efforts. The principal features of a knowledge management system toolbox are described, comprising among others, such functional areas as semantic modelling of knowledge object repositories, and adaptive management of knowledge management processes. Finally we succinctly discuss the end-user oriented methodology guiding specification of the knowledge management application solutions.
