Multi-sourcing has emerged as an important pushing force on the global growth of ITO contracts. However, most of our understanding in various aspects of ITO still derives from dyadic client-vendor relationships. With a single case study on the ITO governance among a client and its two suppliers, I strive to increase the understanding on governance in the specific context of multi-sourcing. Departing from the theoretical framework aligning governance mechanism and governance structures, the case analysis reveals the diverging perception and practice of governance, which have caused the tension and conflicts among the multi-sourcing participants. With implications on both theory and practice, the findings shed lights on the understanding of conflicts and restructuring of supplier relationships in multi-sourcing situation.

Workarounds have existed in software from the very beginning. Being a formalized collection of knowledge rather than a physical artifact, software allows shortcuts in its development process. The shortcuts serve various purposes, like releasing a product to the market faster or postponing the solution of a problem. In this article, we present the findings of an investigation of workarounds in two software companies. Our analysis reveals that the decisions to take a workaround to resolve a technical issue are often intentional and forced by time-to-market requirements. However, the stakeholders are not always familiar with the negative consequences of taking workarounds, like additional hours, costs, and poor quality. We argue that the decision to take a workaround is often made by business managers who see short-term benefits only while developers have to deal with negative consequences in long-term.

To help developers during the Scrum planning poker, in our previous work we ran a case study on a Moonlight Scrum process to understand if it is possible to introduce functional size metrics to improve estimation accuracy and to measure the accuracy of expert-based estimation. The results of this original study showed that expert-based estimations are more accurate than those obtained by means of models, calculated with functional size measures. To validate the results and to extend them to plain Scrum processes, we replicated the original study twice, applying an exact replication to two plain Scrum development processes. The results of this replicated study show that the accuracy of the effort estimated by the developers is very accurate and higher than that obtained through functional size measures. In particular, SiFP and IFPUG Function Points, have low predictive power and are thus not help to improve the estimation accuracy in Scrum.

In enterprise modeling, organizational structures as well as an enterprise's processes and important artifacts (e.g., business knowledge stored in documents) are captured formally using different kinds of models. These models are not only used for documentation purposes, but they are also used to provide guidance for employees. For example, the models may impose rules on artifact access (i.e., who is allowed to view or manipulate certain artifacts) or they may define workflows for individual processes (e.g., which employees should perform which adaptation steps, and in which order). However, existing enterprise modeling approaches typically support only coarse-grained artifacts. For instance, only individual files can be associated with workflow tasks. Unfortunately, enterprise artifacts are typically of high complexity (e.g., spreadsheets contain millions of data cells). Therefore, it is not sufficient to provide employees only with information about the artifacts involved in a task, but it is necessary to provide more detailed information (e.g., which cells in a spreadsheet are relevant). In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to enterprise modeling that addresses the issue of too coarse-grained support for enterprise artifacts. Our approach relies on a generic knowledge-sharing platform, called DesignSpace, in which all aspects of an enterprise are integrated and stored at a fine level of granularity. The DesignSpace supports fine-grained representation of enterprise artifacts and their linking to tasks in defined workflows. Moreover, it enables automatic, efficient, and generic workflow support. First case studies suggest that the approach is feasible and provides significant improvements in terms of efficiency compared to state-of-the-practice enterprise modeling solutions.

In many cases, there is a serious gap between the needs of real-world organizations and the skills that business school graduates actually develop during their studies. In order to close this gap, innovative pedagogic solutions can be implemented in business schools, such as hands-on, work-group information systems courses;but such changes may imply serious budget and organizational problems, also because of the inertial nature of university institutions. Service science is emerging as a very promising approach to tackle the challenges implied in such practice-oriented, demand-driven innovation of educational services. In this paper, we apply a service science approach to propose a bottom-up re-design of the educational service system in a representative case: the School of Management and Economics of the university of Turin, Italy. We identify the network of stakeholders and propose a model in which students, graduates and firms interested in hiring specialized personnel play an active role in co-creating the value delivered by the university educational services. Finally, we outline the main performance measurement and organizational issues implied by this project.

One of the outcomes of the EU-funded iTEC project is the design and the development of a complete eLearning ecosystem, from the design of pedagogical scenarios to their concrete implementation in a Learning Management System, through instantiation of required technical artefacts. The proposed architecture is loosely-coupled and relies on W3C widgets, mashup platforms and other autonomous components, which raise several security issues. This paper reports about the solution that has been implemented to manage user authentication and authorization in such a highly distributed environment, through the combination of various open standards. The proposed approach is based on a survey ran among european teachers about their practices in terms of user credentials usage and sharing.

Modern software development companies focus on their primary business objectives, delivering customer value and customer satisfaction which often leads to prioritization of core business areas over such areas as measurement. Although the companies recognize the need and importance of software measurement, they often do not have the competence and/or time to focus on software measurement. In this paper we address the challenge of optimizing the measurement processes in modern companies by using cloud computing and by providing measurement (process) as a service for core business of the companies. Similar to the concept of Software-as-a-Service we define the concept Measurement-as-a-Service and describe how to organize a measurement program according to this definition. The Measurement-as-a-Service concept is well-aligned with measurement programs developed according to ISO/IEC 15939 and can help the companies to increase the benefits obtained from the efficient use of metrics.

The benefits of customer relationship strategies are well known and somewhat established nowadays. Customer loyalty emerges as the crucial glue in developing a relational approach. However, relational bonds, which relate to customer loyalty, have not yet been fully explored. Also, there is little research that takes into account the effect of service types on customer relationships and bonding. This paper develops a conceptual framework based on previous literature with a complete set of different relational bonds and examines its influence on customer loyalty across search, experience and credence services through a survey-based empirical study, with a sample of 233 consumers. The results provide guidance to managers to differentiate customer relationship strategies according to each specific service context.

The goal of many organizations of today is optimization of business process management. A factor for optimization of business processes is reduction of costs associated with mass production and customer service. Recently, an approach to incorporate batch activities in process models was proposed to improve the process performance by synchronizing a group of process instances. However, the issue of optimal utilization of batch activities and estimation of associated costs remained still open. In this paper, we present an approach to evaluate batch activity performance, based on techniques from queuing theory. Thus, cost functions are introduced in order to (1) compare usual (i.e., non-batch) and batch activity execution and (2) find the optimal configuration of a batch activity. The approach is applied to a real-world use case from the healthcare domain.

This paper describes management strategies for continuous improvement in agile software development teams. We have applied these strategies in a Brazilian team, which was born in 2009 and now grew into a headquarter of the company with ninety people. We have currently reached lean flow state with constant throughput, reduced lead time and enhanced quality by cutting bugs rate in half. In a continuous improvement cycle, our management strategies are based on looking at the situation, sensemaking the situation and providing simple responses. We describe how we applied these strategies to learn how to correctly limit work in progress (WIP) and to face challenges with coaching, estimates, team motivation, sprints and pair programming.
