This paper presents preliminary results of ongoing research on the ethics of using social media on a large scale in disaster management. To date social media use by disaster response agencies has been relatively ad-hoc. The Slandail project aims to build a system for harvesting publicly available data from social media and using it in an ethically responsible and appropriate way to enhance the response of emergency services to natural disaster. The ethical framework draws on the traditions of Isaiah Berlin's value pluralism and Giorgio Agamben's State of Exception in its approach. Value pluralism relates to an understanding that every pluralist society is organized around several and different sets of values and traditions. State of Exception theory is concerned with ethical consequences that arise when governments or state agencies arrogate to themselves extra powers in response to extraordinary circumstances, such as a natural disaster. The implications of these ethical approaches for the Slandail system are examined and discussed according to their impact on the various stakeholders: the system end-users, the public at large, the state and the emergency responders themselves. Implications for the technical design and governance of the system are also deduced and evaluated.

Today's dynamic business environment presents enterprises that wish to stay competitive with a great challenge. This is further complicated by rapidly advancing IT capabilities and the crucial role that IT plays in most organizations a backbone for realizing visions and goals. The problem of eliminating the gap between business and IT within enterprises, i.e. the problem of business and IT Alignment (BITA), has been acknowledged as a contemporary challenge and actively elaborated by academics and practitioners. One practice that is used to facilitate BITA is Enterprise Modeling (EM), which is considered as a catalyzing practice for capturing, visualizing and analyzing different aspects of enterprises. This paper presents a framework that illustrates the role of EM in the context of BITA and suggests recommendations to deal with EM challenges.

Capability management is expected to contribute to a new level of productivity in developing and deploying IT-based business services offered by digital enterprises to their customers. Work on capability management so far emphasizes the technology perspective of capability design and delivery. The paper addresses the question of what is the potential of capability management with respect to business model innovation by considering a case study from business process outsourcing as an example. The aim is to apply an established business model conceptualization as a framework for analyzing the case study and to compare the possibility of identifying business innovations with and without defined capability characteristics.

As organizations are becoming more complex, Enterprise Architecture (EA) serves as an important means to align the strategy with the operations and to achieve business/IT (i.e., information Technology) alignment. Although numerous approaches have been designed for large enterprises, little EA research was oriented towards small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, both organizational types are fundamentally different and require a tailored approach. Therefore, CHOOSE was designed as an EA approach that is in accordance with the needs of SMEs. By performing a case study in the department of a large enterprise, this paper aims to investigate how CHOOSE can be used outside its original context. More specifically, it will be examined how the metamodel and modeling method could be extended to deliver an overview and valuable insights about a complex business reality. To realize this, potential solutions for the encountered issues are formulated and evaluated by the involved business stakeholders.

Configurable process models have shown their usefulness for capturing the commonalities and variability within business processes. However, an end user will require an abstraction from the configurable process model, which is a highly technical artifact, to select a suitable configuration. Currently, the creation of such an abstraction requires considerable steps and technical knowledge. We provide an approach to construct such an abstraction automatically on the basis of an understanding of common concepts underlying process models on the one hand and automated analysis techniques on the other. Our approach also guarantees the consistency between the configuration choices of the end user. A positive yet preliminary evaluation with business users has been carried out to test the usability of our approach.

Major flood of the Loire (longest river in France) is the third feared natural disaster in France. As the Loire flows through major cities and that four nuclear plants are located on its banks, flooding risk increases the vulnerability of critical backbone infrastructures of the West area of France, such as road, energy and communication networks. Crisis response involves numerous and heterogeneous stakeholders, and their services, into a collaborative network to coordinate their actions. Moreover, effectiveness of the crisis response depends on the aforesaid backbone networks. To address these issues, the French funded project GeNePi aims to provide a Mediation information System to support the coordination of the stakeholders and to enhance data retrieval, information analysis and knowledge gathering among the responders. It will aggregate data collected from the field of operations into information and then filter and exploit this information into knowledge, usable for the decision makers.

As agile is maturing and becoming more widely adopted, it is important that researchers are aware of the challenges faced by practitioners and organisations. We undertook a thematic analysis of 193 agile challenges collected at a series of agile conferences and events during 2013 and 2014. Participants were mainly practitioners and business representatives along with some academics. The challenges were thematically analysed by separate authors, synthesised, and a list of seven themes and 27 sub-themes was agreed. Themes were Organisation, Sustainability, Culture, Teams, Scale, Value and Claims and Limitations. We compare our findings against previous attempts to identify and categorise agile challenges. While most themes have persisted we found a shift of focus towards sustainability, business engagement and transformation, as well as claims and limitations. We identify areas for further research and a need for innovative methods of conveying academic research to industry and industrial problems to academia.

When developing Enterprise Models, it is common to aggregate information from several partial models that describe a fragment of the enterprise. This integration is made by connecting elements from different domain models, and is usually a manual task for two reasons: (1) the criteria for connecting pairs of elements is mostly subjective and requires specialized domain knowledge, and (2) any error may impact the coherency of the whole model. However, manual weaving is a difficult and tedious task, with limited support both from methodologies and tools alike. In this paper, we describe a visual approach for weaving domain models, connecting model elements by using adjacency matrices, and visualizing changes at the moment they are made.

business process analysts must face the task of analyzing, monitoring and promoting improvements to different business processes. Process mining has emerged as a useful tool for analyzing event logs that are registered by information systems. It allows the discovering of process models considering different perspectives (control-flow, organizational, time). However, currently they lack the ability to explore jointly and interactively the different perspectives, which hinder the understanding of what is happening in the organization. This article proposes a novel approach for interactive discovery aimed at providing process analysts with a tool that allow them to explore multiple perspectives at different levels of detail, which is inspired on OLAP interactive concepts. This approach was implemented as a ProM plug-in and tested in an experiment with real users. Its main advantages are the productivity and operability when performing process discovery.

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) was proposed with the purpose of improving software modularization by treating crosscutting concerns. Since its introduction, there is no consensus about the impact on performance of the use of AOP techniques to deal with crosscutting concerns. This article explores further the evaluation of performance by proposing a systematic literature review to find out how performance is affected by the introduction of aspects. Then, an experiment is performed to find results about the performance of AOP and weavers. This experiment showed the assessment of several versions of an application. According to this study, the difference concerning resource consumption through variation of weavers can be considered irrelevant considering web applications.
