Organisations are increasingly becoming interdependent in order to create and deliver superior value to their customers. The resulting business models of such organisations are becoming increasingly complex and difficult to design, because they have to deal with multiple stakeholders and their competing interests, and with dynamic and fast paced markets. Hence, in order to ensure the long-term survival of such firms, it is crucial that their business models are viable. business model ontologies (BMOs) are effective tools for designing and evaluating business models. However, the viability perspective has largely been ignored, and the current BMOs have not been evaluated on their capabilities to facilitate the design and evaluation of viable business models. In order to address this gap, current BMOs have been assessed from the viability perspective. To evaluate the BMOs, a list of 26 criteria is derived from the literature. This list of criteria is then applied to assess six well-established BMOs. The analysis reveals that none of the BMOs satisfies all the criteria. However, the e3-value satisfies most of the criteria, and it is most appropriate for designing and evaluating viable business models. Furthermore, the identified deficits clearly define the areas for enhancing the BMOs from a viability perspective.

The main objective behind Workflow systems is to support the definition, execution and control of Workflow processes. A Workflow process defines a set of activities and the specific order in which they should be executed, in order to reach a common objective. Therefore, it is important to manage in the best possible way time and resources. The proposal of this work is to express in a more realistic way the resource allocation mechanisms when human behavior is considered in Workflow activities. In order to accomplish this, fuzzy sets delimited by possibility distributions will be associated with the Petri net models that represent human type resource allocation mechanisms. Additionally, the duration of activities that appear on the routes (control structure) of the Workflow process, will be represented by fuzzy time intervals. To define the execution of activities belongings to minimum and maximum intervals, a time constraint propagation mechanism is proposed. New firing rules based on a joint possibility distribution will then be defined.

Mapping know-how, which is knowledge of how to achieve specific goals, is important as the creation pace and amount of knowledge is tremendously increasing. Thus, such knowledge needs to be managed to better understand tradeoffs among solutions and identify knowledge gaps. Drawing from goal-oriented requirements engineering, in this paper we propose a specialized (and light weight) use of concept maps to map out contributions to problem-solving knowledge in specific domains. In particular, we leverage on the means-end relationship which plays a major role in such domains and further extend it to be able to depict alternatives and tradeoffs among possible solutions. We illustrate the approach using problems and solutions drawn from two domains and discuss the usefulness and usability of the know-how maps. The proposed mapping approach allows for a condensed representation of the knowledge within a domain including the contributions made and the open challenges.

This paper presents "BPMN Miner", a process discovery technique that uses BPMN as the representational language for the discovery result. The proposed approach is novel in the sense that it is able to represent control-flow with BPMN constructs, but also because it augments the control-flow perspective with an organizational dimension by discovering swimlanes that represent organizational roles in the business process. Additional advantages of the proposed mining approach can be summarized as follows: it provides intuitive and easy-to-use abstraction/specification functionality which makes it applicable to event logs with various complexity levels, it provides instant feedback about the conformance between the input log and the resulting model based on a dedicated fitness metric, it is robust to noise, and it can easily integrate with modeling and other BPM tools with exporting functionality through the XPDL-format. In this way, BPMN Miner will take process mining one step closer to the status of indispensable for business process reengineering as discovered models are immediately available in the preferred language of a majority of practitioners, educators and researchers.

This essay considers the researcher career retrospective (RCR) as an emerging publication genre in information systems (IS) and organization studies (OS). I assess two recent career texts, by/of Daniel Robey and John Van Maanen, as representative exemplars of this genre. I outline the genre, and identify resemblance between this and three genres of academic writing - namely career studies, IS history, and tribute. RCR fills an important niche within IS/OS publishing, and is especially needed in the Scandinavian IS research, in which it is currently absent. The 38 years of the IRIS conference, and 27 years of the SJIS journal, coincide with the careers of dozens of researchers. Reflection on these careers would provide much value for younger researchers and for the whole research community.

The health of a software ecosystem is argued to be a key indicator of well-being, longevity and performance of a network of companies. In this paper, we address what scientific literature actually means with the concept of 'ecosystem health' by selecting relevant articles with systematic literature review. Based on the final set of 38 papers, we found that despite a common base, the term has been used to depict a wide range of hoped characteristics of a software ecosystem. However, the number of studies addressing the topic is shown to grow while empirical studies are still rare. Thus, further studies should aim to standardize the terminology and concepts in order to create a common base for future work. Further work is needed also to develop early indicators that warn and guides companies on problems with their ecosystems.

In agile ontology-based software engineering projects support for modular reuse of ontologies from large existing remote repositories, ontology project life cycle management, and transitive dependency management are important needs. The contribution of this paper is a new design artifact called OntoMaven combined with a unified approach to ontology modularization, aspect-oriented ontology development, which was inspired by aspect-oriented programming. OntoMaven adopts the Apache Maven-based development methodology and adapts its concepts to knowledge engineering for Maven-based ontology development and management of ontology artifacts in distributed ontology repositories. The combination with aspect-oriented ontology development allows for fine-grained, declarative configuration of ontology modules.

A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is a temporal statistical model which is widely utilized for various applications such as gene prediction, speech recognition and localization prediction. HMM represents the state of the process in a discrete variable, where the values are the possible observations of the world. For the purpose of process mining for resource allocation, HMM can be applied to discover a probabilistic workflow model from activities and identify the observations based on the resources utilized by each activity. In this paper, we introduce a process discovery method that combines an organizational perspective with a probabilistic approach to address the resource allocation and improve the productivity of resource management, maximizing the likelihood of the model using the Expectation-Maximization procedure.

Globally distributed software development projects are on the rise. However, 69% of cross-regional projects fail completely or partially, because of lack of cross-cultural understanding. This paper presents a qualitative study of the impact of communication on Global Software Development (GSD) within firms due to cultural differences. In particular, we provide a model of problems and solutions related to communication of German/Chinese and American/Chinese collaborations in GSD. The model was derived using grounded theory to study six globally distributed software development projects. The results may not only help companies understand cultural problems, but also help them overcome these problems. To this end, we discuss the solutions adopted by the multinational software companies that we studied.
