The euphoria around microservices has decreased over the years, but the trend of modernizing legacy systems to this novel architectural style is unbroken to date. A variety of approaches have been proposed in academia and industry, aiming to structure and automate the often long-lasting and cost-intensive migration journey. However, our research shows that there is still a need for more systematic guidance. While grey literature is dominant for knowledge exchange among practitioners, academia has contributed a significant body of knowledge as well, catching up on its initial neglect. A vast number of studies on the topic yielded novel techniques, often backed by industry evaluations. However, practitioners hardly leverage these resources. In this paper, we report on our efforts to design an architecture-centric methodology for migrating to microservices. As its main contribution, a framework provides guidance for architects during the three phases of a migration. We refer to methods, techniques, and approaches based on a variety of scientific studies that have not been made available in a similarly comprehensible manner before. Through an accompanying tool to be developed, architects will be in a position to systematically plan their migration, make better informed decisions, and use the most appropriate techniques and tools to transition their systems to microservices.

Online health services provision is the future of heath sector globally. Hospitals that do not make the transition from paper-based systems to electronic may swiftly undermine their chances of sustaining competitiveness in the market and efficiency towards their patients. This paper applies Hospital Online Service Index (HOSPI) assessment methodology to analyse progress in Portuguese hospitals' migration to a digital state. It employs data from an assessment conducted in 2021 to examine online health services provision. The article compares the results of that assessment to a previous one in 2019 and finds that Portuguese hospitals' websites remain in a stable status with slight progress in administration procedures, navigability, usability and readability aspects. The paper also suggests possible steps that could be considered, by Portuguese hospitals, towards covering the existing gaps.

More and more so-called IoT-enhanced business processes (BPs) are supported by IoT devices, which collect large amounts of data about the execution of such processes. While these data have the potential to reveal crucial insights into the execution of the BPs, the absence of a suitable event log format integrating IoT data to process data greatly hampers the realisation of this potential. In this paper, we present the Native Iot-Centric Event (NICE) log, a new event log format designed to incorporate IoT data into a process event log ensuring traceability, flexibility and limiting data loss. The new format was linked to a smart spaces data simulator to generate synthetic logs. We evaluate our format against requirements previously established for an IoT-enhanced event log format, showing that it meets all requirements, contrarily to other alternative formats. We then perform an analysis of a synthetic log to show how IoT data can easily be used to explain anomalies in the process.

Cloud-native architecture is changing the cloud computing environment and introducing new dimensions to cloud computing adoption through the advancement in virtualisation, scalability and automation. However, many organisations found it challenging to adopt cloud-native architectures because of some issues, mainly the decision-making around migration because of the need for the adoption decision process. However, there are many decision-support systems or processes for cloud computing. Nevertheless, the additional characteristic and complexity of cloud-native architecture made many organisations find it challenging to adopt cloud-native architecture solutions. The need for a new decision-support process for the migration of either a native cloud application or legacy application to cloud-native architecture is highly needed to help the developers to be able to select the choice of model and whether to migrate or not. Therefore, this paper provides a step-by-step decision process for an organisation to migrate their application to cloud-native architecture to fill the gap. The decision process depends on the step-by-step cross-analysis of the steps and the tasks to help identify and resolve critical constraints that can affect migration into cloud-native architecture. An expert evaluationmethod was used to evaluate the decision process and steps. The decision process was helpful as they informed the decision makers about the needful steps and tasks to consider before migrating to the cloud-native architecture.

Context: Training image recognition systems is one of the crucial elements of the AI Engineering process in general and for automotive systems in particular. The quality of data and the training process can have a profound impact on the quality, performance, and safety of automotive software. Objective: Splitting data between train and test sets is one of the crucial elements in this process as it can determine both how well the system learns and generalizes to new data. Typical data splits take into consideration either randomness or timeliness of data points. However, in image recognition systems, the similarity of images is of equal importance. Methods: In this computational experiment, we study the impact of six data-splitting techniques. We use an industrial dataset with high-definition color images of driving sequences to train a YOLOv7 network. Results: The mean average precision (mAP) was 0.943 and 0.841 when the similarity-based and the frame-based splitting techniques were applied, respectively. However, the object-based splitting technique produces the worst mAP score (0.118). Conclusion: There are significant differences in the performance of object detection methods when applying different data-splitting techniques. The most positive results are the random selections, whereas the most objective ones are splits based on sequences that represent different geographical locations.

Digital technologies entail novel opportunities for incumbent organizations. However, the possibilities offered by digital technologies need to come together with skilled employees and executives to reveal the transformational implications of digital technologies for incumbent organizations. Despite the contemporary significance, extant literature lacks guidance for digital skills enhancement in incumbents, i.e., assess and develop digital skills in incumbents. Moreover, existing literature on digital skills focuses mainly on the educational context while leaving less explored the incumbent context. Thus, this study explores how incumbents assess and develop digital skills within their organizations through an in-depth case study of a utility company. Specifically, we shed lights on organizational mechanisms (i.e. top management support;company population engagement and human resources function intervention) that can facilitate the development and integration of digital skills in incumbent organizations. We also document organizational characteristics (i.e. time availability and recognition) and individual characteristics (i.e. individual digital skills and willingness) that can enable a group of individuals to facilitate digital transformation and initiate corporate entrepreneurship initiatives in the digital age in incumbent organizations. This study therefore contributes to digital skills, digital transformation, and corporate entrepreneurship literatures and offers practical implications for incumbents.

The paper focuses on enhancing the understanding of treatment processes, particularly in healthcare, through process visualization. Healthcare processes are complex and data-rich due to Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Existing visualization approaches often overlook the crucial data perspective alongside the control-flow perspective. To address this, the paper introduces the Knowledge-Intensive and Context-sensitive Process Instance Visualization approach, incorporating external sources like taxonomies and ontologies. A descriptive language enables flexible visualizations, and the enriched XES format supports tailored representations. Thus, the paper emphasizes the importance of context-sensitive visualizations for efficient interpretation by healthcare professionals. By addressing the challenges in healthcare process mining, the approach seeks to improve patient care through comprehensive and meaningful process visualization.

An individual's textual productions can leave marks that help in identifying an archetype. Knowing an individual's archetype can help you in different areas of your life, both personal and professional. In the professional field, identifying an individual's archetype can help place him in the right company. Furthermore, for a company, identifying the archetype of employees and future employees is essential for better management, which is why this area has been demanding more and more investment and technology. In this work, we seek to identify the archetype of individuals within the business environment based on their curriculum texts. Three main approaches were made, multi-class classification, binary classification and binary regression. Focusing on identifying the archetypes related to PACE (Planner, Analyst, Communicator, and Executor), a methodology for identifying individual archetypes. For this, we use a dataset of 26,636 curriculum to apply our models. The results show potential in the identification of archetypes, obtaining an accuracy of 63% to 65% in our binary classification.

This paper aims to provide clarity on the emerging role of Product Operations (Product Ops) in software-developing organizations. As organizations increasingly acknowledge the benefits of having a dedicated Product Ops function, inconsistencies and uncertainties surrounding the role's responsibilities persist. By analyzing job advertisements for Product Ops positions, this study identifies and categorizes the expected skills and responsibilities, subsequently ranking them by frequency. The results offer a clearer understanding of the Product Ops role based on industry expectations expressed in the job postings.

In engineering informatics, the myriad data types, formats, streaming and storage technologies pose significant challenges in managing data effectively. The problem grows, as new analytics perspectives are emerging from a totally different AI-based tradition. This divide often necessitates the development of custom solutions that link specific data capture methods to particular AI algorithms. Encouraged by the success of object-centric mining models for discrete processes, we look for large clusters of data management practices where novel bridging data models can help navigate the data model divide. We address this question in a two-cycle design science approach. In a first cycle, over 80 actual data model practices from a wide variety of engineering disciplines were analyzed, leading to four candidate fields. In a second cycle, an initial bridging data model for one of these fields was developed and validated wrt some of the found practices. Our findings offer the prospect of significantly streamlining data pipelines, paving the way for enriched AI integration in production engineering, and consequently, a more robust, data-driven manufacturing paradigm.
