It has become an increasingly common practice that software companies collaborate with external developers to develop a software platform for a shared market, constituting software ecosystems. One main concern in adopting the practice of software ecosystem is how to attract external developers to a platform, and how to establish sustainable collaborative relationships with them. We discuss that explicating and in-depth analysis of developers' objectives and decision criteria can facilitate the design of sustainable collaborations in software ecosystems. Scenarios from Apple iOS and Google Android ecosystems are used for illustration.

We propose a plot-based recommendation system, which is based upon an evaluation of similarity between the plot of a video that was watched by a user and a large amount of plots stored in a movie database. Our system is independent from the number of user ratings, thus it is able to propose famous and beloved movies as well as old or unheard movies/ programs that are still strongly related to the content of the video the user has watched. The system implements and compares the two Topic Models, Latent Semantic Allocation (LSA) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), on a movie database of two hundred thousand plots that has been constructed by integrating different movie databases in a local NoSQL (MongoDB) DBMS. The topic models behaviour has been examined on the basis of standard metrics and user evaluations, performance assessments with 30 users to compare our tool with a commercial system have been conducted.

Medical treatment processes in hospitals are complex interactions of various actors, in the course of which treatment decisions have to be made. Clinical practice guidelines and clinical pathways provide guidance for practicioners for certain diseases. Especially for multi-morbid patients several guidelines and pathways might apply. Current process-oriented IT support in hospitals, however, does not consider multiple models for treatment recommendations. In this contribution we define Treatment Cases (TCs) and give an operational semantics for their evolution based on business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) models, which we use to model guidelines, pathways and standard operating procedures. This work is part of the Process information and Guidance System (PIGS) approach, which aims at providing an overview of treatment history and give recommendations based on the current treatment state and multiple process models.

Research on innovation offshoring (IO) has increased substantially over the last decade. IO is (still) widely regarded as the domain of multinational enterprises. Even though more and more researchers are claiming that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) also practise IO, so far, the particularities of SMEs have been widely neglected. This is unfortunate, since a small business is not a little big business and thus most of the IO research lacks generalizability to SMEs. This study uncovers the gap and extends the empirical evidence available from scientific publications, obtaining a more current and accurate picture of IO research on SMEs. We directly approached academic experts through an online survey to collect information regarding the specific characteristics of SMEs relevant for IO, managerial needs arising from those characteristics and theoretical approaches appropriate to framing SME-specific IO research. This study provides a toolkit and roadmap for subsequent IO research aimed at SMEs.

Graphics based systems of Augmented and Alternative Communication are widely used to promote communication in people with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This study discusses an integration of Augmented Reality in communication interventions, by relating elements of Augmented and Alternative Communication and Applied Behaviour Analysis strategies. An architecture for an Augmented Reality based interactive system to assist interventions is proposed. STAR provides an Augmented Reality tool to assist interventions performed by therapists and support for parents to join in and participate in the child's intervention. Finally we report on the usage of the Augmented Reality tool in interventions with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

businesses increasingly embrace the possibilities of mobile computing. While there is broad advice for app developers in general, development of apps for enterprises is hardly covered. business apps support internal processes and contribute to customer relationship management. The heterogeneity of platforms for mobile devices makes development difficult. At the same time, companies seek to support several platforms with their apps to maximize customer acceptance and to support the platforms best suited for their employees. Aiming at improving the knowledge on business app development, we present a framework for assessing mobile platforms. For this purpose, we have developed a distinct set of evaluation criteria and present an exemplary assessment of three platforms - namely Android, Blackberry, and iOS - to demonstrate the feasibility of our framework. Moreover, we give advice, on which strategies to follow when developing for either platform and on considerations companies should take when e.g. planning a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy.

This paper shows through a case study the potential for optimizing resource allocation in business process execution. While most resource allocation mechanisms focus on assigning resources to the tasks that they are authorized to perform, we assign resources to the tasks that they can provably perform most efficiently, by mining the execution logs. This gives rise to the minimization of the cost of the process execution. We present various cost measures and how hybrid algorithms can balance their conflicting goals. Our case study indicates significant potential for further research into optimal resource allocation mechanisms.

Software quality has become a critical and essential aspect in the success of many software companies and products. Since 1970, a number of software quality models have been proposed to evaluate the quality of general and specific domains of software products. These models suffer from the ambiguity of relationships among quality characteristics, sub characteristics and quality measures: there is no clear definition, rule or procedure on how the quality sub characteristics are derived from the main characteristics, how the quality measures could be identified and associated with quality characteristics and sub characteristics and how those could be validated. This study proposes a set of rules for the development and evaluation of software quality models.

business Rules (BRs) allow for defining statements that determine or constrain some aspects of the business and precise what can be done in a specific situation. Together with business Processes (BPs) they compose an efficient framework for business logic specification. In this paper, issues related to integration of the visual design of BRs with BPs modeling methods are considered. As a result of our previous research, the HaDEs framework for visual design of the rule bases was developed. The main goal of this paper is to present the HaDEs toolchain applications and show how they can be used for designing of decision process and effectively integrated with BPs modeling methods.

Modern data-intensive software systems manipulate an increasing amount of data in order to support users in various execution contexts. Maintaining and evolving activities of such systems rely on an accurate documentation of their behavior which is often missing or outdated. Unfortunately, standard program analysis techniques are not always suitable for extracting the behavior of data-intensive systems which rely on more and more dynamic data access mechanisms which mainly consist in run-time interactions with a database. This paper proposes a framework to extract behavioral models from data-intensive program executions. The framework makes use of dynamic analysis techniques to capture and analyze SQL execution traces. It applies clustering techniques to identify data manipulation functions from such traces. Process mining techniques are then used to synthesize behavioral models.
