Enterprises are increasingly adopting serverless computing to enhance scalability, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. However, this shift introduces new responsibilities and necessitates a distinct set of skills for practitioners. This study aims to identify and organize the industry requirements for serverless practitioners by conducting a qualitative analysis of 141 job advertisements from seven countries. We developed comprehensive taxonomies of roles, responsibilities, and skills, categorizing 19 responsibilities into four themes: software development, infrastructure and operations, professional development and leadership, and software business. Additionally, we identified 28 hard skills mapped into seven themes and 32 soft skills mapped into eight themes, with the six most demanded soft skills being communication proficiency, continuous learning and adaptability, collaborative teamwork, problem-solving and analytical skills, leadership excellence, and project management. Our findings contribute to understanding the organizational structures and training requirements for effective serverless computing adoption.

Computer-based scientific experiments are becoming increasingly data-intensive, necessitating the use of High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters to handle large scientific workflows. These workflows result in complex data and control flows within the system, making analysis challenging. This paper focuses on the extraction of case IDs from SLURM-based HPC cluster logs, a crucial step for applying mainstream process mining techniques. The core contribution is the development of methods to correlate jobs in the system, whether their interdependencies are explicitly specified or not. We present our log extraction and correlation techniques, supported by experiments that validate our approach, enabling comprehensive documentation of workflows and identification of performance bottlenecks.

The increasing use of cloud services presents companies with new challenges in terms of compliance and data protection. The conflict between the US CLOUD Act and European data protection regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) leads to considerable uncertainties and risks. In this context, the concept of cloud sovereignty is becoming increasingly important. This paper uses a secondary data analysis to examine how European cloud providers can leverage the challenges of cloud sovereignty to differentiate themselves in the market and develop new business models. The study reveals that Europe's regulatory framework can drive innovation and competitive advantage. By developing trustworthy and legally compliant cloud solutions, European providers can meet the demand for secure and sovereign cloud services and position themselves as an alternative to largeUS providers, thereby tapping into significant market potential.

business processes are constantly changing due to optimization, changes in legislation, or dissatisfaction among participants. Usually, process models are used as the basis for changing process behavior, but the models only provide limited information about possible risks, consequences, and vulnerability of the relationships between activities. Due to the lack of information, changes are implemented too hastily or not at all. In this paper, we elaborate on the relevant information for evaluating behavioral changes in the process. We present concepts and their relationships in a metamodel and show how the application of the metamodel can help to better assess process changes using the travel reimbursement process at a university. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of the proposed metamodel with regard to semi-automated business process redesign support.

The present study aims to develop a reference model that integrates Digital Twins (DTs) and business Process Management (BPM) to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical trials. To achieve this, a five-step method was employed: (1) a collaborative workshop with Clinical Research Center (CRC) managers, scientists, and principal investigators (PIs);(2) validation of stakeholder needs;(3) conceptualization of a DT use case;(4) development of a synergetic reference model;and (5) evaluation of this model with a clinical research specialist. The results identified key business needs from various stakeholders, proposed a DT solution to address these needs, and created a reference model that integrates BPM and DT perspectives. This integrated approach addresses challenges such as ensuring continuous and interoperable data capture, motivating systematic data collection, and facilitating data transfer between CRCs, thus improving stakeholder satisfaction in clinical trials. The developed reference model and the identified research challenges provide a foundation for future research and practical implementation of DTs and BPM in clinical trials. This study advances the field by bridging DT and BPM frameworks, offering a comprehensive approach to managing clinical trial processes, and demonstrating the significant potential of these technologies to improve clinical research efficiency and effectiveness.

Software startups play a critical role in driving innovation and boosting the economy. However, building these distinguished companies is extremely challenging and often comes with an alarmingly high failure rate. The failure reasons include but are not limited to, product development issues, premature scaling, cash flow mismanagement, and difficulties in securing investment. The current study aims to explore the role of prioritization of financially related requirements in the success of startups. We performed a multiple-case study with 16 software startups. We primarily collected data through 29 semi-structured interviews with these companies and analyzed data using thematic analysis. Our findings reveal a strong correlation between using financially focused requirements prioritization criteria such as estimated revenue, return on investment, time to value, cost of development, and the probability of startup success. We also demonstrate that successful startups prioritize product features with a solid business case, optimizing for time to value. In contrast, startups that neglect the cost of feature development increase the likelihood of failure. We conclude our study by highlighting the relationship between feature requirements prioritization activities and their impact on the financial metrics of startups, such as burn rate and runway.

[Background] The game industry faces fierce competition and games are developed on short deadlines and tight budgets. Continuously testing and experimenting with new ideas and features is essential in validating and guiding development toward market viability and success. Such continuous experimentation (CE) requires user data, which is often limited in early development stages. This challenge is further exacerbated for independent (indie) game companies with limited resources. [Aim] We wanted to gain insights into CE practices in pre-release indie game development. [Method] We performed an exploratory interview survey with 10 indie game developers from different companies and synthesised findings through an iterative coding process. [Results] We present a CE framework for game development that highlights key parts to consider when planning and implementing an experiment and note that pre-release experimentation is centred on qualitative data. Time and resource constraints impose limits on the type and extent of experimentation and playtesting that indie companies can perform, e.g. due to limited access to participants, biases and representativeness of the target audience. [Conclusions] Our results outline challenges and practices for conducting experiments with limited user data in early stages of indie game development, and may be of value also for larger game companies, and for software intensive organisations in other industries.

Shaping the future is preceded by imaginations of a desired future. This applies in particular to imaginations in an ethical way. In technology development, future imaginations are traditionally represented through scenarios. Our paper builds on scenario development but supplements it with metaethics, a sub-discipline of ethics dealing with the moral connotations of language, alongside stakeholder theory. Our research design in favor of a good future accounted for various aspects of understanding the good (e.g., functional vs. moral) and different perspectives on the good (from various stakeholders). The interdisciplinary scientific foundations are supplemented in exemplary application with experts from computer science, information systems, ethics, psychology, education, and industry partners. We contribute a transdisciplinary perspective, viewing the future as a task to be shaped and making this tangible in technology development. We provide scientific and methodological guidance to developers, designers, and decision-makers to include ethical considerations in software development.

Emotion AI is an emerging field of artificial intelligence, intended to be utilized by organizations to manage and monitor employees' emotional states, supporting employee wellbeing and organizational goals. The current paper presents a case study that took place in a Finnish research institute, in which research participants (N = 11) were interviewed about their experiences of working in an Emotion AI environment. Our findings indicate that employees have a positive predisposition towards wellbeing monitoring in the workplace when benefits are perceived firsthand. Concerns however, manifest even in settings where there is existing familiarity with the technology, how it operates, and who is conducting the data collection, these are discussed in the findings. We additionally note that employee concerns can be mitigated via robust organizational policies, transparency and open communication.

The integration of virtual reality (VR) into higher education has great potential, such as enhancing the understanding of complex concepts. However, university lecturers struggle to find suitable VR applications due to inadequate filters in app stores. To address this challenge, we developed a concept of a publicly accessible overview suitable for information Systems education, based on metadata. We identified nine VR applications through a systematic search of five common app stores. We classified and coded them by deductively applying an existing taxonomy and inductively deriving new metadata categories. The results are presented as a web app so that university lecturers can search for VR applications tailored to their specific educational needs. For researchers, the defined metadata attributes serve as a foundation for developing web-based platforms where educational VR apps can be effectively searched and filtered according to academic requirements. For practitioners, the web app provides a practical tool to find VR applications that align with their teaching objectives.
