The prediction of service process performance is fraught with challenges from the selection of suitable recurrent neural network architectures. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of various recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures, including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) networks, for predictive process monitoring in service processes. We analyze the impact of incorporating contextual process information from event logs by benchmarking the model performance across multiple IT service management datasets, RNN architectures, and integration strategies. Our empirical results highlight that context-aware models improve prediction performance, but the extent varies with the dataset and the specific RNN architecture. Time-aware LSTMs demonstrated superior performance for remaining time and next timestamp predictions, while GRUs were particularly effective in predicting the next activity. This research underscores the need to carefully consider model architecture and context integration to enhance predictive process monitoring. It also provides insights that can guide the selection of models and integration techniques, leading to future research directions in refining these methods for service process applications.

Effectively evaluating the impact of process interventions on business outcomes is crucial for assessing the effectiveness and return on investment of process improvement initiatives. However, this task is challenging due to the complex interplay of factors influencing process execution and performance. This paper presents a comprehensive and versatile tool that combines propensity score weighting and event logs to enhance causal inference in business processes. Propensity score weighting balances the treatment and control groups based on their observed characteristics, mitigating bias and improving the precision of causal estimates. Event logs are the input source of process mining methods, which enable the analysis and understanding of how a process works. Our tool assists practitioners in selecting the most suitable weighting method, assessing treatment-control group balance, and evaluating covariate balance before and after adjustments. We apply the approach and tool to a synthetic dataset, demonstrating their effectiveness and illustrating key insights gleaned from the analysis. We discuss the implications and benefits of this approach for advancing causal inference in business processes, alongside limitations and potential future developments for the tool.

Recent advancements in digital technology have significantly impacted healthcare, with the rise of chatbots as a promising avenue for healthcare services. These chatbots aim to provide prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services, thereby reducing the workload on medical professionals. Despite this trend, limited research has explored the variables influencing user experiences in the design of healthcare chatbots. While the impact of visual representation within chatbot systems is recognized, existing studies have primarily focused on efficiency and accuracy, neglecting graphical interfaces and non-verbal visual communication tools. This research aims to delve into user experience aspects of symptom checker chatbots, including identity design, interface layout, and visual communication mechanisms. Data was collected through a comprehensive questionnaire involving three distinct chatbots (Healthily, Mediktor and Adele - a self-developed solution) and underwent meticulous analysis, yielding valuable insights to aid the decision process when designing effective chatbots for symptom checking.

The design and development of Analytical information Systems demand efficient techniques and technologies for processing vast amounts of data that arrive at high velocity or that are available in legacy/operational systems. While many advances have been verified in the technological field to deal with the potential volume, velocity, and variety of the data, fewer contributions can be found in the methodological domain. These conceptual and methodological perspectives are key to providing the foundations for designing and developing Analytical information Systems that also guarantee the veracity and value of the data. Considering three levels of detail, this paper proposes a multidimensional model that abstracts the dimensions to be considered, the driving components of the dimensions, and the core concepts of the components with the supporting approaches, techniques, or technologies for designing and developing Analytical information Systems. We exemplify the proposed model with an instantiation that highlights the decisions or actions to be taken toward the design and development of more effective and efficient systems supporting decision-making in organizations.

This paper investigates the adequacy of using digital tools as a solution for knowledge transfer and especially for tacit knowledge transfer. Based on individual interpretations (sense-reading), tacit knowledge is more difficult to verbalize and transfer with information systems and digital tools. The expansion of such tools leads to a great risk of neglecting this type of knowledge which is, nevertheless, essential to decision-making and action. In this article, we argue that the transfer of tacit knowledge through digital tools can be improved by understanding their actual tacit knowledge transfer potential and raising awareness on their limits. The efforts to adapt and use digital tools must consider the degree of knowledge tacitness and the role of people as knowledge brokers who facilitate the socialization between stakeholders to ensure common interpretations. Indeed, digital tools supporting a social dimension significantly and positively affect tacit knowledge transfer when they ensure trust, reciprocity, and shared goals. Knowledge brokers, recognized for their role as intermediaries between different networks, can facilitate exchanges in these new and not so new spaces.

This article describes the staged vector stream similarity search methods, or briefly SVS, designed to index and search vector streams by similarity over a time interval. SVS continuously adapts to the vector stream as the vectors are received and do not depend on costly updates on an index structure. The article presents experiments to investigate the performance of two implementations of SVS, one based on product quantization and another based on Hierarchical Navigable Small World graphs. Finally, the article describes a proof-of-concept implementation of a classified ad retrieval tool that uses staged HNSW on real data collected from an online classified ads company.

The concept of linking data, in its core, is one of the cornerstones of the Semantic Web, and the design principles of Linked Data aim to establish standardization for knowledge representation. The rationale behind this research is to analyze Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV) to elicit useful insights regarding the status and potential of interoperability of existing vocabularies, organized in thematic areas (domains). The goal behind the latter is to identify how semantic interoperability of vocabularies (and datasets which are described by the relevant knowledge schema) could be improved, while the expected outcome is an enhanced overview of the existing knowledge representation in the LOV ecosystem, with emphasis put on domain-specific vocabularies and their reuse. In order to gain a general perspective of the domain-specific vocabularies that currently exist, a mapping between the 13 European Data Portal (EDP) thematic categories and the categorization of LOV was initially performed. Afterwards, an analysis framework to capture the information from this desk-based research was included. The analysis framework included: i) the connections of the identified (from the initial mapping) domain-specific vocabularies to core vocabularies in the LOV ecosystem, ii) the connections of domain-specific vocabularies to vocabularies within the same domain, and iii) the connections of domain-specific vocabularies to the other domains. The previous three dimensions were then combined to create an initial assessment on how reusable and thus, interoperable (and beyond) the vocabularies under analysis were, acting as an indicator for domain interoperability readiness.

Several Decision Support Systems (DSS) have been presented in literature. This paper presents an information and Decision System that has been performed to implement a Framework for building decision models in the context of Multi-Criteria Decision Making/Aiding (MCDM/A) approach. This system incorporates the steps of the framework in order to support DMs to build decision models. This system does not intend to suggest a specific MCDM/A method but can be used to structure the model with rigor following the framework steps. In addition, this system can be used to document important steps of the process. The DSS also provides flexibility for users since they can return to previous steps to review or adjust some points. Also, the DSS is interactive since the users present preferential information in all steps. An important step presented in the system regards the preference modeling process. During this step, Decision-Makers (DMs) should contextualize the rationality presented in the MCDM/A problem. Moreover, several tests of consistency are done in order to improve the system and to understand how DMs define the rationality of those problems and if they stay consistent with their rationality during the process. In addition, the DSS included several aspects of Problem Structuring Methods, considering important aspects that are not considered in the previous version of the framework. In special, concepts of the Value Focus Thinking method have been included in the system to support the definition of objectives, criteria, and alternatives. This feature improves the new version of the framework. This DSS presents the most important steps of the framework and also provides insights for the development of behavioral studies, which can bring advances in the MCDM/A approach.

In contrast to traditional business models, Digital business Ecosystems (DBE) have several distinctive features - heterogeneity of involved actors, symbiosis in the exchange of resources, co-evolution of their interactions, and self-organisation. Designing DBEs is a task demanding a well-defined DBE's scope, roles and responsibilities of the actors, their interactions and dependencies, as well as versatile technologies and data. The study focuses on two DBEs Marispace-X and Skippo in the maritime domain to capture the tenets of the blue economy with dataspaces. Because the design approaches to DBE are scarce due to the paradigm's novelty, the study aims to evaluate a model-based design method, DBEmap. The evaluation results concerning practitioners' perceived usefulness of the DBEmap and its support for integrating DBE-related perspectives and designing and managing DBE resilience are presented.

This paper introduces an approach that utilizes smart contracts to facilitate the trustworthy sharing and management of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, as described using model cards. To this end, the proposed approach incorporates Account Abstraction for authentication, enabling role-based access control. This control allows stakeholders to share, track, and validate model cards transparently and securely while tailoring visibility and interaction to preserve privacy in accordance with each role's privileges. The approach further delineates the conceptualization and lifecycle management of model cards, spanning from creation to deprecation, all within a blockchain-based framework. Additionally, the paper discusses the state parameterization of model cards, formalizing the operational dynamics and constraints associated with each phase of their progression. The proof of concept, implemented to evaluate our approach, suggests that it is capable of effectively capturing and maintaining an immutable record of the various states of model cards, thereby providing a robust and verifiable trail. Overall, our approach is designed to ensure the integrity of model cards and establish accountability, thereby strengthening trust among stakeholders, particularly those relying on AI and ML models as described in model cards.
