Healthcare faces the challenge to deliver high treatment quality and patient satisfaction while being cost efficient which is tackled by introducing clinical pathways to standardize the treatment processes. At the Jena University Hospital, the clinical pathway for living donor liver transplantation was modeled using business Process Model and Notation. A survey based on that model investigates on the transferability of this pathway to other hospitals and lists the requirements for a general model including the need for flexibility caused by differences in treatments in various hospitals. In this paper, we show an approach to tackle the requirements for such a flexible process by using the Case Management Model and Notation standard. Further, we show how case monitoring and analysis can be established by using an approach combining event processing and case management. The holistic approach is exemplified by using a scenario of the evaluation of living liver donors.

The objective of the paper is to study the use of service science to create a systematic service innovation in the health environment. Starting from the basic abstraction of service science, which is considered as value co-creation when people, technology and value propositions are connected by internal and external service systems and shared information [1], the paper aims to explain the benefits of the electronic medical record (EMR) and its business and organizational impacts in an Italian Academic Integrated Hospital. The research method is based on a case study and on connected semi-structured interviews. The qualitative study shows the co-created value, i.e. the impacts of introduction and development (consolidation) of EMR on efficacy and efficiency of the organization, on data collection and processing, error reduction, sustainability of SSN (national health service) and especially the better quality of services to the citizens.

Service-oriented cloud-based web and mobile applications have placed new expectations and demands on software architectural design. In Maciaszek et al. (2014) we proposed a new meta-architecture as a reference model for developing such applications. The seven-layer meta-architecture is called STCBMER (Smart Client - Template - Controller - Bean - Mediator - Entity Resource). This paper concentrates on the description of principles that guide architects of specific service cloud applications that aim at conforming to STCBMER or similar meta-architectures. The principles are derived from a predecessor meta-architecture called PCBMER (Presentation - Controller - Bean Mediator - Entity - Resource) and are extended based on a comparative evaluation of principles in two other meta-architectures - SANTA (Solution Architecture for N-Tier Applications) and MAAG (Microsoft Application Architecture Guide).

Much research has been devoted to the study of methods that help managing ISD projects. So far, this resulted in a large amount of literature on a variety of often normative ISD methods, generally categorized into plan-based and agile approaches. ISD method research has been driven by the common understanding that a high level of complexity calls for methodologically sound management and rule-based interaction in the development team. In this paper, we propose that high levels of inter-organizational and inter-personal trust can reduce the need for method-based interaction. We present the case of a successful ISD project set in a complex organizational setting with high success pressure. Our findings reveal that when method influence is low and only very lose control mechanisms are established, the trusting relationships within both the organizations and the developers highly affect the success of the project.

Different process models are created within an enterprise by different modelers who use different enterprise terms. This hinders model interoperability and integration. A possible solution is formalizing the vocabulary used within the enterprise in an ontology and put this ontology as bases for constructing process models. Given that an enterprise is an evolving entity, the ontology needs to evolve to properly reflect the domain of the enterprise. This paper proposes an enterprise-specific ontology-driven process modelling method which tackles the two aforementioned issues by assisting the modeller in creating process models using terminology from the ontology and simultaneously supporting ontology enrichment with feedback from those models. When the modeller creates a model, matching mechanisms incorporated in the method are working together to suggest a list of ontological concepts that have a high potential to be useful for a particular modelling element. When the model is created, its quality is first evaluated from different perspectives to make sure that it can be used within the enterprise, and second to discover whether its feedback can be useful for the ontology. When the feedback is extracted, the proposed method incorporates guidelines on how to use this feedback.

In flexible environments like healthcare and customer service, business processes are executed with high variability. Often, this is because cases' characteristics vary. However, it is difficult to correlate process flow with characteristics because characteristics may refer to different perspectives, their number can be real big or even because deep domain knowledge may be required to state hypotheses. The goal of this paper is to propose an effective exploratory tool for discovering the characteristics that are causing the process variation. To this end, we propose a process mining approach. First, we apply a clustering approach based on Latent Class Analysis to identify subtypes of related cases based on the case-wise process characteristics. Then, a process model is discovered for each cluster and through a model similarity step, we are able to recommend the characteristics that mostly diversify the flow. Finally, to validate our methodology, we applied it to both simulated and real datasets.

To remain competitive in dynamic environment, enterprises need to make effective and efficient decisions in response to changes. Good modeling tools and analysis support is a necessity in this regard. Such modeling and analysis tools should to be able to visually model and programmatically analyze several descriptive and prescriptive modeling languages in concert. We recount our experience with visual modeling editor and ontological representation for both descriptive and prescriptive models for enterprise decision making. Starting with purposive modeling tools, we shifted to integrated modeling environment where all relevant models of enterprise coexist and are analyzed together. Our ongoing research suggests that apart from integrated modeling environment, scalable modeling facilities for better interaction between modelers and domain experts are also necessary to make modeling and analysis of enterprise models more streamlined.

In today's product software market, the practices of re-use, partnering and 3rd party contracting give rise to complex software ecosystems. Over the duration of a product life-cycle, product software vendors build up relationships with their suppliers and other partners, which range from informal acknowledgements of each other's presence to strategic alliances. There is still a lack of understanding surrounding the roles, connections, relationships, and resulting networks within software ecosystems. Using modelling techniques and statistical analysis, these networks can be used as tools to further that understanding. In this paper a collection of 67 software supply networks will be modelled as a network graph. Using clustering and two extensions of basic software supply network data, we identify several major players and domains in the Dutch software industry. Three business strategy perspectives are then related to the data to provide an example of their potential practical use.

Linked Open Data has been recognized as a useful source of background knowledge for building content-based recommender systems. While many existing approaches transform that data into a propositional form, we investigate how the graph nature of Linked Open Data can be exploited when building recommender systems. In particular, we use path lengths, the K-Step Markov approach, as well as weighted NI paths to compute item relevance and perform a content-based recommendation. An evaluation on the three tasks of the 2015 LOD-RecSys challenge shows that the results are promising, and, for cross-domain recommendations, outperform collaborative filtering.

During crisis situations, people often use social media to seek for help and to find new collaborators who can help them in emergency management. In this context, we propose an intelligent application to find and recommend potential and relevant collaborators through social media. This application is based on a large scale contextualized community detection to compose dynamic groups. To do so, we propose to reuse a new community detection algorithm that considers simultaneously the network structure (social connections) and profiles homophily (similarities). An application of the proposed solution and a comparison with another community detection algorithm evaluates its performance.
