This study investigates the effects of social presence and synchronicity on the creation of mutual trust and understanding between conflicting parties in negotiations. An experimental study was conducted in which participants negotiated either face-to-face, through synchronous chat or through asynchronous e-mail. The results show that the high social presence in FtF communication seems to enhance the feelings of trust and understanding the negotiator has in the other party compared to the online negotiations, but not the amount of understanding and trust the other party has in him/her. Synchronicity does not seem to have an influence on the negotiation processes since both the synchronous chat and the asynchronous e-mail condition have equal scores on mutual trust and understanding.

Conformance checking is becoming more important for the analysis of business processes. While the diagnosed results of conformance checking techniques are used in diverse context such as enabling auditing and performance analysis, the quality and reliability of the conformance checking techniques themselves have not been analyzed rigorously. As the existing conformance checking techniques heavily rely on the total ordering of events, their diagnostics are unreliable and often even misleading when the timestamps of events are coarse or incorrect. This paper presents an approach to incorporate flexibility, uncertainty, concurrency and explicit orderings between events in the input as well as in the output of conformance checking using partially ordered traces and partially ordered alignments, respectively. The paper also illustrates various ways to acquire partially ordered traces from existing logs. In addition, a quantitative-based quality metric is introduced to objectively compare the results of conformance checking. The approach is implemented in ProM plugins and has been evaluated using artificial logs.

Agile software development is increasingly adopted by companies evolving and maintaining software products to support better planning and tracking the realization of user stories and features. While convincing success stories help to further spread the adoption of Agile, mechatronics-driven companies need guidance to implement Agile for non-software teams. In this comparative case study of three companies from the Nordic region, we systematically investigate expectations and challenges from scaling Agile in organizations dealing with mechatronics development by conducting on-site workshops and surveys. Our findings show that all companies have already successfully implemented Agile in their software teams. The expected main benefit of successfully scaling agile development is a faster time-to-market product development;however, the two main challenges are: (a) An inflexible test environment that inhibits fast feedback to changed or added features, and (b) the existing organizational structure including the company's mind-set that needs to be opened-up for agile principles.

Since the environment for businesses is becoming more competitive by the day, business organizations have to be more adaptive to environmental changes and are constantly in a process of optimization. Fundamental parts of these organizations are their business processes. Discovering and understanding the actual execution flow of the processes deployed in organizations is an important enabler for the management, analysis, and optimization of both, the processes and the business. This has become increasingly difficult since business processes are now often dynamically changing and may produce hundreds of events per second. The basis for this paper is the Constructs Competition Miner (CCM): A divide-and-conquer algorithm which discovers block-structured processes from event logs possibly consisting of exceptional behaviour. In this paper we propose a set of modifications for the CCM to enable dynamic business process discovery of a run-time process model from a stream of events. We describe the different modifications with a particular focus on the influence of individual events, i.e. ageing techniques. We furthermore investigate the behaviour and performance of the algorithm and the ageing techniques on event streams of dynamically changing processes.

The main goal of this work is to evaluate the feasibility to calculate the technical debt (a traditional software quality approach) in a model-driven context through the same tools used by software developers at work. The SonarQube tool was used, so that the quality check was performed directly on projects created with Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) instead of traditionals source code projects. In this work, XML was used as the model specification language to verify in SonarQube due to the creation of EMF metamodels in XMI (XML Metadata Interchange) and that SonarQube offers a plugin to assess the XML language. After this, our work focused on the definition of model rules as an XSD schema (XML Schema Definition) and the integration between EMF-SonarQube in order that these metrics were directly validated by SonarQube;and subsequently, this tool determined the technical debt that the analyzed EMF models could contain.

This paper investigates the balance of hedonic and utilitarian values in information systems (IS). More specifically, we are interested in the continuum of such values in IS use. The paper reviews a set of literature to investigate the differences of hedonic and utilitarian IS and the role of hedonism in them. Furthermore, we define hedonic and utilitarian values in this context. We propose that the balance between hedonic and utilitarian values varies depending on the nature of the IS, and we present a conceptual model of hedonic and utilitarian values in IS use. The article provides an argument that the nature of the IS influences the balance of hedonic and utilitarian values that the IS provides. Finally, we propose that the nature of the IS is not central in explaining IS use but instead should be considered as a mediator.

Hospitals are nowadays collecting vast amounts of data related with patient records. All this data hold valuable knowledge that can be used to improve hospital decision making. Data mining techniques aim precisely at the extraction of useful knowledge from raw data. This work describes an implementation of a medical data mining project approach based on the CRISP-DM methodology. Recent real-world data, from 2000 to 2013, were collected from a Portuguese hospital and related with inpatient hospitalization. The goal was to predict generic hospital Length Of Stay based on indicators that are commonly available at the hospitalization process (e.g., gender, age, episode type, medical specialty). At the data preparation stage, the data were cleaned and variables were selected and transformed, leading to 14 inputs. Next, at the modeling stage, a regression approach was adopted, where six learning methods were compared: Average Prediction, Multiple Regression, Decision Tree, Artificial Neural Network ensemble, Support Vector Machine and Random Forest. The best learning model was obtained by the Random Forest method, which presents a high quality coefficient of determination value (0.81). This model was then opened by using a sensitivity analysis procedure that revealed three influential input attributes: the hospital episode type, the physical service where the patient is hospitalized and the associated medical specialty. Such extracted knowledge confirmed that the obtained predictive model is credible and with potential value for supporting decisions of hospital managers.

Despite a perceived convergence in mobile application development, platforms such as Android and iOS remain largely incompatible. Supporting multiple platforms currently requires either separate native development (for each system) or utilization of a cross-platform development framework. While many such frameworks have been developed, only few are mature and even less are used widely, let alone commercially. Moreover, they typically are limited with regard to performance and to preserving a native look & feel. Worst of all, their usefulness for business apps is limited due to their low level of abstraction. In this paper, we take a closer look at an academic prototype that employs model-driven software development (MDSD) for a cross-platform framework that facilitates business app development. We discuss lessons learned from its development and early application, reengineering it with business producibility in mind. We aim at closing a design-oriented research gap: we describe what the approach to employ MDSD in mobile computing is and to what extent it might be useful in general. These findings are embedded in a case-study inspired discussion of the aims of reengineering the approach.

Present-day Social Networking Sites are steadily progressing towards becoming representative data providers. This paper proposes TweetPos, a versatile web-based tool that facilitates the analytical study of geographic tendencies in crowd-sourced Twitter data feeds. To accommodate the cognitive strengths of the human mind, TweetPos predominantly resorts to graphical data structures such as intensity maps and diagrams to visualize (geo-spatial) tweet metadata. The web service's asset set encompasses a hybrid tweet compilation engine that allows for the investigation of both historic and real-time tweet posting attitudes, temporal trend highlighting via an integrated animation system, and a layered visualization scheme to support tweet topic differentiation. TweetPos' data mining features and the (geo-spatial) intelligence they can amount to are comprehensively demonstrated via the discussion of two representative use cases. Courtesy of its generic design, the TweetPos service might prove valuable to an interdisciplinary customer audience including social scientists and market analysts.

Service Science can be considered as the study of the interaction between human beings, technology and business. This paper describes the use of technology to analyse visitor's experiences in order to improve the tourism business sector. Despite what the mere accidental observation could show, tourism is one of the significant experiences for human beings. Moreover, it is one of the services with most potential for generating wealth. Service Science should be a key for companies and regions to properly design and manage tourist services. This paper describes a study with both sentiment and qualitative analysis carried out using the opinions of foreign tourists in the Philippines. The value of this work lies in providing recommendations on the basis of a systematic study. Thus, the potential of analyzing services through a scientific focus is shown.
