The Modtalk project is an effort to create a production ready tool chain for compiling Smalltalk programs into standalone executables. This development project entailed writing and testing code in a cross development environment, in a target executable environment, and a C based runtime that supports the compiled executable. We discovered that test-driven development supported team communication, focused design efforts, and produced code artifacts that documented the system. In the process, we also discovered that tests were often brittle and would break for a variety of reasons. We identify why some of our tests were brittle and ways in which we responded when tests failed.

Many business-to-business (B2B) companies are shifting their focus from transactional selling to engaging in long-lasting relationships with their customers. This impacts how companies sell their products and services. Instead of selling isolated products and services in single transactions, companies bundle and individualize their products and service to address individual customer needs. These bundles are called product-service systems (PSS) or solutions. This work reflects the current body of knowledge on selling PSS based on a literature review and provides new insights based on a qualitative study conducted with three multinational B2B companies providing PSS. Our findings propose that companies struggle to profit from PSS with a variety of different reasons. Implications on PSS itself are not quantified easily due to high variability of accounting practice regarding PSS and their service components. Furthermore, according to our interview results, for achieving long-term success with PSS three factors and their interrelations are critically important. First, PSS must fit into the targeted market strategy. Second, PSS and the market strategy must be consequently implemented within the organizational structure and the conduct of day-to-day business. Third, PSS providers have to deal with complexity which PSS comprise.

Enterprise Modeling (EM) methods and tools have been developed and successfully used for more than two decades yet their adoption in organizations is mostly ad hoc. Only a few EM methods and tools have become successful products despite being theoretically sound and having certain success in application in practice. This grounded theory inquiry ponders on what factors influence the successful productization of EM methods and tools. Among the factors discussed are EM maturity gap, method and tool development process, application context, marketing and sales aspects, as well as product aspects.

We present an interactive evolutionary multiple objective optimization (MOO) method incorporating preference information of several decision makers into the evolutionary search. It combines NSGAII, a well-known evolutionary MOO method, with some interactive value-based approaches based on the principle of ordinal regression. We introduce several variants of the method distinguished by an elitist function indicating a comprehensive value that each solution represents to the group members. The experimental results confirm that all proposed approaches are able to focus the search on the group-preferred solutions, differing, however, with respect to both part of the Pareto front to which they converge as well as the convergence speed measured in terms of a change of utilitarian value of the returned solutions.

This paper shows through a case study the potential for optimizing resource allocation in business process execution. While most resource allocation mechanisms focus on assigning resources to the tasks that they are authorized to perform, we assign resources to the tasks that they can provably perform most efficiently, by mining the execution logs. This gives rise to the minimization of the cost of the process execution. We present various cost measures and how hybrid algorithms can balance their conflicting goals. Our case study indicates significant potential for further research into optimal resource allocation mechanisms.

businesses increasingly embrace the possibilities of mobile computing. While there is broad advice for app developers in general, development of apps for enterprises is hardly covered. business apps support internal processes and contribute to customer relationship management. The heterogeneity of platforms for mobile devices makes development difficult. At the same time, companies seek to support several platforms with their apps to maximize customer acceptance and to support the platforms best suited for their employees. Aiming at improving the knowledge on business app development, we present a framework for assessing mobile platforms. For this purpose, we have developed a distinct set of evaluation criteria and present an exemplary assessment of three platforms - namely Android, Blackberry, and iOS - to demonstrate the feasibility of our framework. Moreover, we give advice, on which strategies to follow when developing for either platform and on considerations companies should take when e.g. planning a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy.

One often thinks that the use of information Technologies brings an infinity of choices. However, Popularity still influences people in our free, pervasive and connected world. It is a reality: popular items keep power and weak items tend to be forgotten. Several studies demonstrated that this natural phenomenon is accentuated today with recommender engines. In this article we present a comparative study of 8 recommendation techniques. We also present a personal recommendation approach, based on items timeline. We unveil a Popularity Influence index, which evaluates the way recommender engines are influenced by the phenomenon. This experiment is led by a pool of interdisciplinary researchers, either or both epistemologists and computer scientists. It includes diverse examples and references from e-business, cultural studies or participatory democracy along with others. We believe that Popularity belongs to a wide set of fields. Therefore, we chose to run this experiment in an E-learning context, where we observe pieces of knowledge popularity.

Due to its flexibility and extensive tool support, XML is an obvious choice for a generic data exchange format. However, the verbosity and processing overhead of textual XML impedes its use in resourcerestricted embedded networks. These disadvantages have been addressed by the introduction of binary representations of the XML Infoset such as W3C's Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) format. EXI can be used to significantly reduce message size and processing overhead for XML-based messaging. In this paper, we show how to leverage EXI for filter-enabled binary XML dissemination in embedded networks. The approach further reduces resource consumption by sharing common data and processing results among a set of multiple queries. Thus, through the suitable placement of pre-and post-filters on binary XML data, bandwidth on network connections and computational resources on nodes can be saved. Consequently, more data can be processed with a certain amount of available resources within an embedded network.

Our work is generally focused on recommending for small or medium-sized e-commerce portals, where we are facing scarcity of explicit feedback, low user loyalty, short visit times or low number of visited objects. In this paper, we present a novel approach to use specific user behavior as implicit feedback, forming binary relations between objects. Our hypothesis is that if user select some object from the list of displayed objects, it is an expression of his/her binary preference between selected and other shown objects. These relations are expanded based on content-based similarity of objects forming partial ordering of objects. Using these relations, it is possible to alter any list of recommended objects or create one from scratch. We have conducted several off-line experiments with real user data from a Czech e-commerce site with keyword based VSM and SimCat recommenders. Experiments confirmed competitiveness of our method, however on-line A/B testing should be conducted in the future work.

Nowadays organizations acquire multiple repositories with process specifications. Organization stakeholders such as business analysts and process designers need to have access and retrieve such information as it is proven that adapting existing business processes in order to meet current business needs is more effective and less error-prone than developing them from scratch. This thesis concentrates on process retrieval and will propose a business process searching mechanism, taking advantage and extending existing graph based matching techniques, with the aim to exploit the knowledge that already exists within an organization.
