In order to support capability management, the field of Enterprise Architecture proposes methods and notations to model enterprises and their capabilities. ArchiMate is one of such notations and includes constructs to support capability mapping and other capability management tasks. However, the notation lacks some fine-grained distinctions that are required to understand intricate phenomena involving capabilities, including capability interaction and the emergence of capabilities. In this work, we perform an ontological analysis of the language's support for capability modeling based on a well-founded ontology of capabilities aligned with the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO). Through this ontological analysis, we identify some issues outlining possible improvements for ArchiMate. This is a first step towards language redesign, which may include the proposal of language patterns and/or the revision of language constructs.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has made great progress. However, despite impressive results, modern data-driven AI systems are often very difficult to understand, challenging their use in software business and prompting the emergence of the explainable AI (XAI) field. This paper explores how machine learning (ML) students explain their models and draws implications for practice from this. Data was collected from ML master students, who were given a two-part assignment. First they developed a model predicting insurance claims based on an existing data set, then they received a request for explanation of insurance premiums in accordance with the GDPR right to meaningful information and had to come up with such an explanation. The students also peer-graded each other's explanations. Analyzing this data set and comparing it to responses from actual insurance firms from a previous study illustrates some potential pitfalls-narrow technical focus and offering mere data dumps. There were also some promising directions-feature importance, graphics, and what-if scenarios-where the software business practice could benefit from being inspired by the students. The paper is concluded with a reflection about the importance of multiple kinds of expertise and team efforts for making the most of XAI in practice.

Despite their considerable dissemination, existing UML modeling tools suffer from significant limitations that stand in the way of their profitable use in practice as well as in teaching. This paper presents a new UML modeling tool, called UML-MX (c), that overcomes these limitations. It is based on a language architecture that not only enables the integration of class and object diagrams, but also the execution of objects in the diagram editor. Thus, it promotes a more inspiring learning experience. At the same time, it goes beyond the limitations of traditional approaches to model-driven software development by enabling a common representation of models and programs.

Software plays a crucial role in promoting sustainability, yet there is no standardized approach for embedding sustainability into Scrum agile software development process. With many systems now built using agile methods, integrating sustainability into these practices is essential. This paper presents an action research conducted with an industry partner to demonstrate how sustainability concerns can be incorporated into the Scrum agile framework using previously published sustainability elicitation techniques (e.g., we used the Sustainability Awareness Framework for this action research). The goal of this study is to guide software development practitioners in making sustainability-conscious design and development decisions. Our findings show that even practitioners with limited prior sustainability knowledge, were able to successfully adapt their agile processes to integrate systematic treatment of sustainability concerns.

In an increasingly dynamic world, business processes must be able to respond to frequently occurring and random changes during their execution. Consequently, this means that the process models must be able to handle this complexity and enable process analysts to derive the right conclusions quickly. However, current approaches in the field of process mining do not distinguish between process activities associated with change and those with routine. This condition leads to more complicated, overloaded, and sometimes misguided process visualizations that make it difficult for analysts to evaluate them. In this paper, we address the research problem by conceptualizing a new type of process activity that we call change activity which we base on causal knowledge. We thereby extend the causal process mining approach with another important aspect for handling random occurrences of events. We evaluated our findings through a survey of process mining experts from research and practice. Our results indicate that a dedicated visualization of change activities reduces the complexity of process visualizations. In addition, unimportant information is hidden and important information is highlighted so that analysts can make better assessments.

Change adoption and management are paramount to organizations' operations and continuous service delivery. Analysis of the extant literature reveals challenges organizations face while adopting new technologies within their information technology (IT) infrastructures. The paper presents an empirical study featuring semi-structured interviews with IT practitioners (from 13 IT organizations operating in Finland) while considering, (i) why organizations adopt the latest technologies, (ii) what challenges arise by adopting the latest technology, and (iii) how the organization makes the adoption process successful. In line with these questions, 14 motivational drivers, 24 challenges, and 12 success enablers were identified. In addition, the paper also presents a conceptual framework of identified drivers, challenges, and success enablers, that govern the successful adoption of the latest technologies. The framework also helps practitioners to understand the technology adoption process by analyzing the motives, identifying the challenges, and overcoming challenges through success enablers.

Towards Sustainable ICT Solutions: Analyzing Call for Tender Documents 1

Currently, all public development initiatives are expected to consider environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, social sustainability, and, more broadly, the UN's sustainable development goals. This requirement also applies to periodically renewable or replaceable IT systems and services. However, little is known about how the development goals are actually addressed in IT. As public sector organizations are obliged to acquire new systems through public procurement procedures, we collected all Finnish ICT-related calls for tenders from a public repository in May 2024. By qualitatively analyzing 106 calls for tenders, we aimed to understand how the sustainability goals appear and are addressed in public ICT acquisitions. Surprisingly, only 7,55% of the calls mentioned the goals indirectly in their descriptions. Even more surprising was the absence of generic reasons and motives for the renewal initiative. Only 9,43% of the calls clearly stated the objective of the system renewal or provision. These low numbers have several consequences. First, they illustrate that sustainability goals are not considered in the IT field in practice;They are dead letters there. Second, the absence of explicit motives for the system renewal makes it challenging to design, develop and implement the system and reach and assess whether the initiative has reached its goals. This could be one of the main reasons why so many IT projects are said to fail - not knowing why they were developed makes it impossible to assess whether they have reached their targets.

There is an increasing potential for using AI applications in finance, ranging from simpler Generative AI applications to more complex, agent oriented solutions. This paper reports on our experience in applying early AI solutions in an Australian fintech landscape. We first present a framework developed to support industry experts and practitioners in adopting AI solutions in a scaleable manner, to ensure the adoption of fit-for-purpose AI systems. We then focus on a longer term research dimension, which addresses more complex business problems for which the emerging multi-agent AI technologies may offer more value. We experimented with these technologies, including their integration with more mature approaches such as RAG. Our proof of concept for retirement planning application, highlights benefits and directions for LLM-powered AI agents, and also identifies limitations of current technologies. Specifically, deploying multi-agent technologies on low-powered infrastructure presents challenges. These limitations can hinder the implementation of solutions that require reliable reasoning and collaboration. Our proof of concept highlights both the potential of multi-agent technologies, and the limitations that need to be addressed.

Large language models (LLMs) have disrupted knowledge work in many application areas. Accordingly, the business Process Management (BPM) community has started to explore how LLMs can be leveraged, resulting in a variety of promising research directions across the BPM lifecycle. Despite rapid adoption in practice and strong research interest, however, little is known about the actual design of BPM systems that leverage LLMs in organizational contexts. In this paper, we report on design science-based research in collaboration with a large multinational company to design a BPM system that leverages LLMs for process knowledge extraction from diverse enterprise content. Based on the development of our prototype, we observe that LLMs provide the means to organize and generate process knowledge independent of specific forms of representation. We present a conceptual framework that describes the role of LLMs in generating process knowledge from diverse input formats and, in turn, making it available in diverse output formats via prompting, resulting in representation-agnostic process knowledge. We also highlight implications of our study for BPM research and practice.

Process mining leverages execution traces within an organisation's IT systems to gain insights into its processes. Despite being a mature discipline in academia and industry, setting up process mining pipelines is still a complex task and involves programming, manual steps, and considerations of privacy and intellectual property. This paper introduces a platform based on a distributed architecture that helps define, deploy, and execute process mining pipelines across organisations. The requirements for this distributed architecture and platform are derived from a set of process mining scenarios, whose relevance is validated through a survey. Furthermore, this paper introduces a prototype for an initial version of the platform, demonstrating feasibility and supporting the specified requirements.
