The paper deals with the formation of the Adriatic conurbation by reinterpreting the development of mass tourism starting from the first forms of exploitation of the sea, such as floating platforms and piers suspended over the sea. The historical analysis starts from the so-called invention of the sea (Alain Corbin), which for the Italian Adriatic coast dates back to the eighteenth century and from the use of marine waters as medical therapy. The first forms of marine architecture are described, such as the floating platforms of Trieste and the bathing establishments of Rimini, but also the equipped piers of Lignano Sabbiadoro, to then reach the Fascist era with the boom of marine colonies, complexes built on the coast for health purposes. Among the cases described, one, the so-called Island of Roses of Rimini, assumes particular importance for the purposes of the conference. The Island of Roses was the name of a 400 m2 artificial platform that was located on the Adriatic Sea, 500 m off the Italian territorial waters. Conceived and designed by engineer Giorgio Rosa in 1958 and completed in 1967, it was declared an independent state on 1 May 1968. Although it gave itself an official language (Esperanto), a government, a currency, and a postage stamp, it was never formally recognized by any country in the world as an independent nation (see Netflix movie "The Real Story of Rose Island"). The paper continues by describing the identity and the landscape of the cities of the Adriatic coast, in which the contexts of the waterfronts are affected by settlement pressures due to the intense tourist uses.

Given the extensive utilization of composite structures of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and normal concrete (NC) in engineering applications, there has been a growing emphasis on studying the shear failure and mechanical properties analysis of the UHPC-NC interface. U-shaped studs assume a crucial role in reinforcing the UHPC-NC interface, so it is of great significance to analyze the shear failure of UHPC-NC interface with U-shaped studs. To directly observe the bonding failure process between studs and concrete and to determining the failure mechanism of the UHPC-NC interface with U-shaped studs, this paper establishs the three-dimensional finite element model to investigate the local damage evolution and the failure pattern of UHPC-NC incorporating U-shaped studs. The numerical analysis indicates the final failure pattern of the UHPC-NC interface with U-shaped stubs is the fracture of the U-shaped stud.

This research aims to propose a design of a structural system for emergency shelters with bamboo slats in bending active on the northern coast of Peru. The Peruvian coast annually undergoes disasters due to natural, telluric, and meteorological phenomena, including the El Nino Coastal phenomenon. This causes material losses and damage to housing infrastructure and basic services. As a method, the connectors were developed and prototyped on two scales and designed digitally. As a result of the analogue-digital exploration, a geodesic dome was developed that employs bending active principles using sluts profiles as the minimum longitudinal section of the bamboo and digitally manufactured connectors printed on PETG filament. When assembled, these will generate active bending stresses in the ribs and the assembly will adopt a shape similar to a portion of a sphere. In conclusion, the construction of the dome is a reference for future proposals and innovations in conjunction with 3D digital fabrication for the communities affected by the El Nino phenomenon.

Metro stations are vital urban transportation hubs, handling substantial pedestrian traffic, especially during peak hours. Research on pedestrian movement within these stations is crucial for understanding crowd behavior, flow patterns, congestion, and evacuation strategies. This study employs a microscopic analysis approach, using the social force model to simulate pedestrian behavior at Choti Choupar Jaipur metro station. It examines various pedestrian parameters, including walking speeds, densities, and directional preferences. Alongside simulation, a questionnaire survey captures user perceptions of discomfort in different station areas. The VISWALK tool analyzes pedestrian movement dynamics, focusing on flow patterns and congestion levels. The study carefully considers factors such as station layout, platform configuration, and passenger behavior to propose strategies for optimizing station design and crowd management. The research also assesses the level of service (LOS) related to changes in average pedestrian density, emphasizing comfort, convenience, and safety. This focus on service quality allows metro station operators and urban planners to identify improvement areas, prioritize enhancements, and implement interventions to enhance the passenger experience. Additionally, the study examines the impact of shops with varying dimensions within entry/exit and passageway areas. Notably, the findings suggest that strategically integrating shops into passageways can be done without compromising pedestrian comfort. The research highlights that the entry/exit and platform areas contribute most to pedestrian discomfort, as indicated by user perception surveys and average density results during peak hours. These insights are valuable for optimizing metro station user dynamics and improving overall service quality.

Surface and internal erosion of soils caused by drainage or seepage of water are the main reason of failure in many engineering projects especially hydraulic structures and embankment dams. This type of failure is considered one of the most catastrophic failure in all engineering projects due to the huge loss of properties and lives. Therefore, the need for stabilizing the soil against erosion is a major goal of geotechnical engineer. This research presents a comprehensive experimental testing program of using cement-glass mixture to stabilize clayey soils against internal erosion. Two types of clayey soils (CH and ML) were mixed with different percentages of cement-crushed glass mixtures by dry weight of the soil and tested at different curing times. Hole Erosion Test (HET) was employed to evaluate the internal erosion parameters mainly the erosion rate index and the critical shear. The results showed that the addition of 5% and 8% of cement-crushed glass by dry weight of clay resulted in a significant reduction in the internal erosion and substantial increase in the critical shear stress for ML and CH soils, respectively. The value of the erosion index (I-HET) increased from 2.7 (very rapid erosion) to 5.5 (very slow erosion) for ML and from 3.2 (moderately rapid) to 5.7 (very slow erosion) for CH soil. This study also showed that the rate of internal erosion decreased with curing time and the effect of the cement-crushed glass mixture on ML soil is higher than CH soil in resisting internal erosion.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has emerged as a prominent methodology for assessing the environmental performance of infrastructure projects. In the bridge infrastructure industry, one of the challenges is to consider environmentally friendly alternatives that minimize resource consumption and reduce environmental impacts. By incorporating LCA into the decision-making process, stakeholders can identify the most sustainable materials and construction techniques, aiming to mitigate the carbon footprint of bridge projects. This includes exploring options such as using recycled or low-carbon materials. This study presents an LCA conducted on a reinforced concrete bridge deck in Norway to assess its environmental impact on global warming potential. The LCA methodology analyzes the production stage, construction phase, end of life, and Module D and provides valuable insights into the environmental performance of different alternatives. The evaluation considered key environmental indicators of greenhouse gas emissions. By examining the life cycle of the bridge, the study provides valuable insights into environmental hotspots and opportunities for sustainable improvements. The findings contribute to informed decision-making for bridge design, construction, and maintenance, aligning with Norway's commitment to sustainable infrastructure development. The research emphasizes the importance of integrating LCA as a standard practice in bridge projects to reduce ecological footprints and preserve natural resources. The outcomes of this study serve as a foundation for policymakers, engineers, and designers to promote sustainable practices in bridge infrastructure development in Norway.

Many studies have investigated dewatered sludge utilization as a landfill liner. The main reason for this utilization is because of the dewatered sludge's strength and hydraulic performance, the discovery found. Cracks influence hydraulic properties;cracks' existence causes a sharp rise in water conductivity, compromising the barrier system. There is considerable research on dewatered sludge as a landfill liner, but few prioritize crack as the main factor. This study analyzes the dewatered sludge's cracking potential as a landfill liner by testing swelling bentonite, proctor standard, permeability, and desiccation with WD cycle methods. Results show each composite free swell index consisting of dewatered sludge, bentonite, and tire fiber is influenced massively by different materials. Bentonite can alter the dewatered sludge's plasticity characteristics, making the composite more plastic and increasing its plastic index from 5 to 15%. Five variants' OMC and MDD values showed no appreciable difference ranging from 25-42% and 1.3-1.37 gr/cm(3). Based on its density value of 1.22 gr/cm(3), permeability of 3.72 x 10(-7) cm/s, and CIF value of 0.9538%, which satisfies the standards for the value of depreciation, V2 with 75% dewatered sludge, 10% bentonite, and 15% tire fiber, is the best option for a landfill liner.

The recently signed UN High Seas Treaty aims to designate up to 30% of international waters as Marine Protection Areas (MPAs). Hotspots of marine biodiversity are sea mountains that form shallow waters in the middle of the sea. Since the successful protection of MPAs depends mainly on a physical presence on-site, we propose to position over the sea mountains floating bases that survey the MPAs and are therefore called "SeaSurveyors". Low costs of the SeaSurveyors are crucial: the cheaper they are, the more MPAs can be created. Therefore, a new space frame system for the swimming platform has been developed, which is covered by a perforated aluminum mesh skin mainly for data protection reasons. The equipment with autonomous air vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles with a range of up to 2000 km allows a corresponding distance between SeaSurveyors positioned on different sea mountains. Initial estimations validate the hypothesis that the integration of pioneering engineering techniques and an emphasis on marine mountain biodiversity could enable a team of 15 SeaSurveyors to safeguard 25% of global oceans as Marine Protected Areas at a very modest expense.

With growing urbanization, our cities require efficient planning measures and infrastructure upgradation to maintain a fine balance between growth and sustainability. In this regard mixed-use development has become an essential component of various planning movements like Smart Growth, New Urbanism and significantly influences the interaction between land use and transportation. In case of Indian cities, mixed-use development has taken place in incremental ways where people have changed and used their residential units in commercial developments, creating multifunctional areas hosting different economic activities including informal activities. Such self-organized development is mostly influenced by high level of local accessibility and consumption demands of retail and services at neighborhood level. This study focuses on both planned and unplanned residential areas of North-West Delhi, where survey of selected mixed-use streets is conducted, and ordinal logistic regression-based model is developed to understand the relationship between customer attraction and type of commercial activities, clustering of commercial activities, mixed-use characteristics, and road network connectivity indices. Results of this study can be further utilized in framing policies for transport and pedestrian infrastructure, travel demand assessment along with planning for catchment areas of transit-oriented development for Indian cities.

Investments in public academic building projects have been declining due to concerns on justifying economic and social impacts measured by social return on investment (SROI) approach. Controlling the forecast SROI in public universities require effective economic policies based on dynamics of the system. In this study, conceptualized an initial dynamic model for SROI system of public academic building projects applying the steps recommended by (Sterman, 2000) and (Ngowtanasuwan & Hadikusumo, 2017). The hypothesis was developed on basis of historical public spending behavior over time on higher education, and the (Zheng, 2002)'s return on investment (ROI) model. The system elements were selected through a Delphi method. The resulted initial causal loop diagram agrees the (Oyo et al., 2008)'s dynamic model except in some elements;enables further steps of dynamic modeling for the SROI system;and, contributes to dynamic modeling of socioeconomic impacts of public higher education infrastructure projects. A further study on quantifying the externalities and identifying critical simulation parameters.
