Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is a system that produces clean energy from the temperature differences in the ocean. Its power production is very stable and is expected to be implemented as a base-load power supply, despite using a natural energy source. In addition, this energy source would provide an attractive integration with other industries such as aquaculture with ocean nutrient enhancement, desalination, deep seawater cooling, and hydrogen production. Currently, a floating OTEC plant is in development toward a commercial-scale deployment. The floating plant is configured with a floating platform, mooring system, seawater intake pipe/ inlet, and discharge pipe/duct. In particular, a cold water pipe (CWP) is the most challenging component in a commercial-scale OTEC. For a 100 MW-scale CWP, the length is 600-1000 m, and the diameter is over 10 m, designed to transport deep seawater at a flow rate of approximately 200 m(3)/s. Due to its size, there is a strong dynamic coupling between the floating platform and the mooring system, requiring a coupled analysis and an integrated design approach with other components. Meanwhile, one of the authors of this paper has proposed a 100 MW-net OTEC plantship for Indonesia, which utilizes a converted pre-owned ship to reduce capital costs. In this paper, a coupled dynamic analysis is performed for the preliminary design of the mooring system and CWP, along with a sensitivity analysis of the dynamic responses of the floating platform and CWP to design parameters. The results are used to discuss the dynamic characteristics and design methods for an OTEC floating plant, to improve reliability and further develop this floating structure concept.

Due to the scarcity of land space and resources, very large floating structures (VLFS) has been proposed to utilize marine resources, which has a wide range of application prospects, including floating airports, floating bridges, floating farms, etc. In reality, in-service damages may occur in floating structures because of the long-term erosion by seawater and wave actions. Existing research studies on hydroelasticity mainly focus on intact VLFS, while hydroelastic responses of VLFS in damage conditions are rarely investigated. This paper performs hydroelastic analyses on damaged beam-like VLFS to evaluate dynamic motions induced by wave actions. Mathematical formulation for the hydroelastic analysis is briefly introduced, and hybrid finite element method (FEM)-boundary element method (BEM) Python code is developed accordingly, in which damage conditions are modeled with the rotational spring method and additional flexibility matrix method. Critical parameters are selected to assess the performance of VLFS in damage conditions, including damage location, crack depth, etc. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is verified by comparing with results in existing literature. Research outcome indicates that the degree of damage conditions significantly affects the dynamic responses of VLFS. The displacement magnitudes vary with the distribution of damages, which should be handled with caution in the design procedure.

A pontoon-type floating structure with a moonpool has been proposed as the base floating structure for floating offshore wind turbine systems. By utilising the resonance phenomenon of the water mass in the moonpool, it is expected to reduce wave forcing and motion response. On the other hand, there is little discussion on wave drift forces, which are nonlinear wave forces important for mooring design. In particular, the potential theory, which neglects viscosity, may overestimate the resonance of the water mass of the moonpool, and its behaviour and wave drift force characteristics should be well informed. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between the steady wave drift force and the behaviour of the water surface in a moonpool on a pontoon-type floating structure with a single moonpool. A hybrid boundary element method, in which the boundary integral equations are discretized by second-order isoparametric elements, was applied to calculate the wave drift forces. The wave drift forces were calculated from the perturbation expanded second-order nonlinear differential frequency component wave forces by the direct pressure-integral near-field method. The influence of the water surface behaviour of the moonpool on the steady wave drift forces is discussed from the calculation results. The frequency bands in which the wave drift force is increased and those in which it is drastically reduced by the moonpool compared to the wave drift force acting on a typical pontoon. It was shown that the wave run-up term had a significant influence among the terms that make up the wave drift force. To confirm this, the state of the water surface fluctuations around the object was investigated, and it was shown that the water level fluctuations around the floating object changed in a complex manner due to the moonpool. These results indicate that a more accurate understanding of the behaviour of the water surface in the moonpool is needed.

Worker engagement is a critical factor for the growth and sustainability of construction organizations. This research study aimed to explore the causal factors that influence worker engagement in construction projects, with a focus on the northeastern central region of Thailand. A sample group of 315 construction project workers participated in the study, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed for data analysis. The research findings revealed five key factors that significantly impact worker engagement in terms of both organizational and personal aspects. These factors included (1) work-related facilities, (2) additional benefits, (3) compensation for overtime and festival work, (4) accommodation facilities, and (5) transportation services. Based on these insights, strategies were proposed to strengthen worker engagement in construction projects. Enhancing employee welfare, providing recognition and rewards for efforts, investing in suitable accommodation options, and arranging transportation facilities were highlighted as effective measures to bolster worker engagement.

Condition assessment, an important part as part of infrastructure evaluation, is a critical process for operations and maintenance to ensure a sustainable environment. However, condition assessment is often overlooked by some professionals in the construction industry. In this paper the role of virtual reality in condition assessment was examined from a construction industry perspective. A virtual experiment has been developed using VRTY software with integrated infrared thermographs of a road segment. The images were shared with construction professionals to determine its convenience and reliability using a survey. The feedback from 29 respondents highlighted the strengths and areas of improvement in the experiment. The analysis showed that: condition assessment is currently performed frequently by contractors, but clients only occasionally attend site visits;condition assessment documents are frequently viewed by the client, and it is important for clients to view them before making decisions about the project;the featured tool is convenient for viewing condition assessment outputs;and clients could highly trust results from the AR tool.

Understanding the impact of geometrical features such as gradients, sharp curves, sight distances, etc. on the capacity of hill roads is crucial for efficient and safe traffic operations. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the influence of geometrical characteristics on the capacity of hill roads. By rigorously collecting and analyzing extensive data, this study investigates the correlation between diverse geometrical factors and road capacity. Data was collected from four different stretches on the Rishikesh-Badrinath Highway (NH-7), representing different topographical and geometrical conditions. The study also investigates potential interactions and the relationships between these factors. The findings highlight the critical role played by geometrical characteristics in determining road capacity on hill roads. Steeper gradients, sharper curves, and restricted sight distances were found to have a substantial negative impact on capacity. Additionally, the study investigates the estimation of capacity loss while negotiating from the tangent to the curved section of the hill road. The research provides valuable insights into the relationship between tangent gradient, capacity loss, and curve radius, which can aid in the design and planning of hilly roads. The findings highlight the importance of considering the effects of gradient and curve radius on road capacity.

Accessibility in transportation is an often overlooked aspect of urban planning and infrastructure development. It plays a significant role in ensuring that vulnerable groups including Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) can lead an independent and inclusive life. However, historically, transportation systems have often under-prioritised the needs of PwDs, creating barriers to their mobility and participation in society. Recognising these challenges and the importance of creating accessible transportation systems, the Government of India launched the Accessible India Campaign (AIC) in 2015. This campaign aims to bridge the gap between the aspirations and the reality of creating a fully accessible transportation system. Multimodal transportation hubs have been on the rise in recent times, aiding cities to improve the efficiency of their transportation systems. These hubs enable the users to seamlessly transfer between the various modes of travel. Vyttila Mobility Hub, a multimodal transportation hub in Kerala, India, integrates road, metro rail, and water transport services. While the hub gives an opportunity to shift between the various modes, its ease of use by the vulnerable groups is to be ascertained. The considerations include vehicular accessibility, the built environment, and the organisational systems, ensuring that PwDs can navigate the hub independently and with dignity. Evaluating and addressing accessibility at all levels of transportation infrastructure is crucial for creating a more equitable and inclusive society.

At urban traffic intersections, stopping, idling, and acceleration behavior of traffic results in increased pollution levels and makes them pollution hotspots. Among all the pollutants, particulate matter (PM) significantly accelerates human mortality and morbidity rates. This study was conducted to find the effect of peak and off-peak traffic on PM exposure concentrations at a traffic intersection. PM data was collected for a week during the day for 15 min every three hours intervals at one of the busiest traffic intersections in Varanasi. Meteorological parameters like atmospheric temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH) were also logged along with PM measurements to establish a relationship between PM exposure and meteorological parameters. The study found higher exposure values during off-peak and lower during peak traffic hours. The lowest exposure (26 mu g m(-3)) was found during the early morning. In contrast, higher exposure (41 mu g m(-3)) was observed during midday and evening off-peak traffic hours. In addition, the commuters are exposed to a higher inhaled dosage of PM2.5 during off-peak traffic hours. PM2.5 emitted from vehicle's tailpipes and resuspension of road dust stays in the air as aerosol and does not disperse instantaneously. Thus, the accumulation of PM during morning and afternoon peak traffic might result in higher concentrations during midday and evening off-peak traffic hours. It might be one of the reasons behind higher exposure in off-peak traffic hours and lower exposure in peak traffic hours. However, the lowest PM exposure during the early morning might be due to continuous off-peak hours at night.

Uplift is one of the main manifestations of seismic damage in lightweight underground utility tunnels. This paper proposed an adaptive drainage decompression system (ADS) that reduces the liquefaction uplift of the structure. The ADS consists of gravel piles, gravel diversion blind trenches, and relief wells. Using the finite difference program Flac(3D) to build the base model (BAC) and the adaptive drainage decompression system model. Using the Finn-Byrne constitutive model to account for the liquefaction properties of loosely saturated sands. The results of the two numerical models were then compared to analyze the development of excess pore water pressure, the deformation of the soil, and the uplift of the structure under dynamic loading. The results showed that the new adaptive drainage decompression system had excellent drainage properties and would effectively dissipate excess pore water pressure accumulated in vibrations. The maximum uplift value for the utility tunnel in the ADS model was reduced by 55.2% compared to the base model.

As urbanization continues to accelerate across the country, it births numerous challenges, such as transportation, pollution, and parking shortages attributed to the non-walkability of many Indian cities, especially in the commercial markets. The Government has initiated pedestrianization measures in various commercial markets to address this. However, the accessibility to these commercial markets needs improvements to meet the shoppers' expectations. Therefore, the present study aims to measure the shoppers' satisfaction with accessing the two pedestrianized urban commercial markets, namely, Lajpat Nagar and Karol Bagh in Delhi, India. Accordingly, the study derived the satisfaction ranking of selected eight attributes influencing the accessibility of markets based on shoppers' perceived satisfaction. Using digital and pen-paper survey methods, a face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted to collect 400 samples of shoppers' satisfaction with the selected attributes on a 5-point Likert-type ordinal scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Subsequently, the database was analyzed using the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to derive the satisfaction rankings of the attributes. The results show that the attributes shoppers find most satisfying are 'safety' and 'social life'. While 'cleanliness' and 'universal accessibility' are the attributes, shoppers are least satisfied. 'Cleanliness' was observed as the major concern among shoppers, regardless of gender and age. The study findings would help policymakers and urban planners by providing valuable insights into the impact of pedestrianization on urban market spaces and shed light on the specific areas for improvement for accessibility in Indian commercial markets.
