Huge earthquakes with tsunamis are more likely to occur in Japan, including the Nankai Trough earthquake, the Japan Trench earthquake, and the Chishima Trench earthquake;therefore, effective tsunami protection measures are needed for moored vessels in Japanese ports. The floating tsunami protection wharf (FTPW) has been proposed as a tsunami protection measure for vessels moored at wharves. The FTPW is a floating pier with a tsunami disaster prevention function, which can prevent the breaking of mooring lines and the grounding at a wharf by floating together with moored vessels during a tsunami. Although previous studies have mainly demonstrated the tsunami disaster prevention performance of the FTPW with a shallow draft, this study proposes the use of a deep-draft type floating tsunami protection wharf (DFTPW) with an even deeper draft. The disaster prevention performance of the FTPW and the DFTPW moored to 3,000 DWT class vessels were compared using the three-dimensional moving particle simulation (MPS) method. The results showed that both the FTPW and the DFTPW can prevent tsunami damage to moored vessels for the leading waves. However, the DFTPW has superior disaster mitigation performance than the FTPW for the backwash, and a combined measure using DFTPW and strengthening of mooring forces is necessary.

Speed selection is one of the factors associated with road traffic crashes. Additionally, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research revealed that 63% of Malaysian highway crashes are caused by vehicle loss of control. Based on the design speed, a posted speed limit informs drivers of the maximum safe speed under usual travel conditions. However, the standard static posted speed limit may not be considered a safe speed in adverse weather conditions such as rain. Due to hydroplaning, vehicle tires can lose contact with the pavement, leading to out-of-control collisions. To address this issue, this project develops the Rainy Speed Advisory System (RSAS) to help drivers choose a safe speed in rainy conditions. RSAS consists of two components: real-speed detection to monitor current vehicle speed and advisory speed based on rainfall density. An online survey was conducted to gather road users' knowledge and feedback, involving 100 participants. The results reveal that over 28% of respondents had experienced hydroplaning-related road traffic crashes, and 82.9% did not know how to choose a speed in rainy conditions. About 92.8% of respondents agreed that the RSAS could help users select an appropriate speed during rain. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that innovative solutions like the RSAS might be used to reduce road traffic crashes and promote sustainable towns and communities. Road authorities, such as the Malaysian Highway Authorities, could adopt RSAS as an alternative to reduce traffic crashes along highways. RSAS might also be a viable solution for accident-prone locations on federal or state roads, particularly for crashes occurring during rainy conditions.

Based on the concept of balanced architecture and symbiosis of Zhejiang University, this research innovatively explores the two-way interaction between campus and city. It systematically sorted out the design elements and summarized the design strategies of the campus-city boundary space in a layered manner. The research of Zhejiang University Xixi Campus is taken as a case which is expected to provide a more universal, specific and in-depth method, theory and practice optimization strategy for the renewal of the boundary space of the city center.

This paper conducts a comprehensive investigation into the behavior of API 5L X42 pipelines under the influence of artificial corrosion and combined loads, specifically bending and burst pressure. Three primary objectives guide the research: the development of finite element models for bare pipes and those corroded to 10%, 25%, and 50% of their original integrity;the evaluation of residual strength and stress patterns in corroded pipelines under both combined and uncombined loadings;and the rigorous validation of findings through comparison with previous research. Using finite element analysis in Abaqus software, the study scrutinizes the structural behavior of pipelines under various conditions, emphasizing the effects of corrosion and combined loads. The results highlight that those pipes with 50% artificial corrosion exhibit reduced burst pressure due to heightened stress concentration. Moreover, the investigation into combined loads on pipelines with 50% artificial corrosion shows minimal variation in burst pressure compared to uncombined loads, confirming the reliability of the findings through validation with previous research. In summary, this research significantly contributes to our understanding of API 5L X42 pipeline behavior, particularly in burst pressure analysis, accounting for factors like material integrity, bending, and artificial corrosion. To further enhance future studies, expanding data collection and testing, especially in high-temperature environments, is recommended to provide a more comprehensive perspective on the behavior of API 5L X42 pipelines in practical engineering applications.

Nanotechnology has significantly impacted the construction industry, bringing about technological innovation and tangible solutions to promote sustainable projects and enhance the quality of life. Europe, Asia, and North America have demonstrated noteworthy progress in developing large-scale projects in recent years. This transformative change has also profoundly influenced the evolution and investment in the construction sector of various Latin American countries. The present study begins by examining the emergence of nanomaterials and their application in the structures, finishes, coatings, insulation, enclosures, and installations of existing buildings to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the global landscape of utilizing nanotechnology in civil engineering and architecture. Subsequently, it seeks to depict the current situation in Peru, where a demand exists for more innovative practices in the construction sector. However, ongoing research initiatives within academic groups in various Peruvian institutions strive to address national social needs, including health and environmental concerns. Moreover, this research highlights nanotechnology's social, economic, and ecological benefits, exploring the implications for health and the regulatory considerations necessary for integrating nanotechnology in the construction sector, focusing on the roles of governments, industries, and academia. Finally, this paper aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on nanotechnology in the Peruvian construction industry while shedding light on the advancements made in other scientific disciplines.

The fatigue properties of fiber cement boards are an interesting issue in the modern construction. Cement boards improve impact more resistance and durability to wall surfaces than water-resistant plasterboard. Cement boards are also manufactured in thin sheets of polymer cement that allow bending on load-bearing surfaces. This article introduces an experiment on the bending stiffness of a fiber cement beam under the effect of static load over time. The behavior of the beam follows the creep phenomenon of viscoelastic materials. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to further study the impact of intermissive fatigue load on the mechanical properties of viscoelastic elements inside fiber cement materials widely used in load-bearing floors in construction projects. At each fatigue vibration, displacement of beam under the effect of static load is measured to check the creep characteristic of the viscoelastic model. Then, vibration response under the effect of impulse load is also measured to check the dynamic effects. Experiment show that intermissive fatigue load significantly affects the creep results of the material but has little effect on the dynamic parameters.

Women are essential to our society due to their contributions to cultural diversity, education, health care, and economic growth. Women often face challenges and hindrances while commuting that affect their access to various locations. To create safe travel options, it is vital to understand the mode choice behaviour of women commuters and develop practical models to address their specific needs and issues. This paper examines the various factors that affect the mode choice of women commuters. The study was conducted in the capital city of the Kashmir region of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. A questionnaire survey resulting in 465 valid responses was conducted. The respondents predominantly belonged to the age group of 18-41 years and primarily used paratransit mode for commuting. A multinomial logit model was developed to analyse the factors affecting the mode choice of women commuters. The model results revealed that travel expenses, annual household income, car ownership, reason, and harassment are the most significant factors in predicting the mode choice behaviour ofwomen commuters. Findings from this study show that women are three times more likely to feel safe in the car than in bus transportation. It can also be inferred that the car mode is considered the safest option among the modes of transportation analysed. The results of this study will be helpful for decision-makers in making policies for the promotion and betterment of women's mobility.

When tsunami run-up on land, containers, large vehicles, ships and other objects become drifting debris and collide with a building. However, it is known that the backwater created by the run-up flow in front of a relatively large building makes it difficult for drifting debris to collide with a wall of the building. The purpose of this study is to clarify how the velocity of drifting debris immediately before impact changes because of the ratio between the width of the building and the width of the drifting debris with each tsunami incidence angle. Besides, for that, regime characteristics of the flow field around the building is investigated. A uniform flow field was reproduced in a numerical tank by using the MPS method, which was a particle method. When the flow field was stable, a drifting object was dropped onto free surface. Then sufficient acceleration time and distance were kept. In the case where the tsunami incidence angle was small and the width of the building was greater than the width of the drifting object, the velocity of the drifting object just before impact was reduced due to the backwater in front of the building. On the other hand, in the case where the tsunami incident angle was 45 degrees, the velocity of the drifting object just before impact was almost unaffected by the backwater in front of the building. These results suggest that the impact force of drifting objects is greater at the corner where the building columns are located than at the building wall. From the point of view of protecting buildings against tsunami-drifting debris, it is thought that damage can be reduced by placing trees and other structures at the corners of buildings in the direction of tsunami impact.

Traditional homes in the Ecuadorian Andean region showcase their culture and tradition in their design. However, they may not be effectively harnessing natural light, making it necessary to analyze this condition. Natural light is essential for creating comfortable and habitable environments in homes. This research aims to understand the influence of natural lighting in traditional homes. On-site measurements and digital simulations were conducted to evaluate the luminous flux in specific areas of these homes. Parameters unique to this type of construction, such as the materials used, orientation, date, and time of day, were considered to ensure the accuracy of the simulations. Using Velux software, it was possible to simulate the sun's trajectory throughout the day and year to comprehend and enhance the luminous performance of these spaces. Measurements and simulations revealed that the levels of illumination in traditional Andean homes fall below the standards established in the Ecuadorian Construction Regulations. This is partly due to the design of small windows on the main facade and the materials used in floors and walls. This demonstrates that integrating natural light into architectural design is crucial for improving the quality of life for occupants and promoting sustainability.
