Reinforced earth embankments have seen massive developments in the past few decades owing to their necessity and ability in supporting heavy static or dynamic loads. This study focusses on the design recommendations for a 24 m high reinforced earth embankment supporting 3 coal carrying freight rail tracks as well as 2 rapid loading system (RLS) used for hauling and transporting coal at a coal handling plant in Talchar, India. The study involved laboratory evaluation of the strength of various materials and its numerical application in designing of the embankment using finite element software MIDAS GTS NX. It was proposed to stabilize the embankment using a unique system of geocell, geogrid and geotextiles which performs the function of both reinforcement and separation while the side slopes were stabilised using anchors and geonets which improved the performance of embankment by 175%. The authors to the best of their experience and knowledge have given design protocols and recommendations for the design of a stable geometrical configuration of embankment.

Urban public transport (PT) is essential for sustainable cities due to its capacity and benefits for economy, health, and environment. However, merely providing PT services is insufficient;ensuring equal accessibility is crucial. The Public Transport Accessibility Levels (PTAL) tool, developed in London, is a global standard for assessing PT systems using Points of Interest, Service Access Points, frequency, and walk networks. Despite its utility, factors like time, fare, land use, density, infrastructure, comfort, safety, and cleanliness also affect PT accessibility. A Melbourne study revealed disparities between expected and observed PTAL, suggesting additional parameters might help. In India, where PT users are mainly captive, PTAL assessments often overlook smaller cities. This study, conducted in Rewa, Satna, and Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, tests PTAL's accuracy and explores additional parameters, focusing on intra-city PT and Intermediate Para Transit (IPT). Findings indicate PT is preferred for low fares, while IPT is chosen for convenience. Enhancing PTAL accuracy involves incorporating layers like building cover and land use, applicable through a Geographic Information System (GIS) plugin.

Ready-mix concrete (RMC) is one of the most utilized concrete products globally. To obtain a suitable prediction tool for performance of resulting RMC products can be beneficial to the whole industry. This paper presents a comparative study among five different machine learning algorithms [namely Multi-linear Regression (MLR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBOOST) and Deep Neural Network (DNN)] that can be used to predict the 28-day concrete strength of various mix designs and mixing conditions of 207 RMC mixtures. The RMC mix design parameters evaluated include cement content, coarse aggregate content, fine aggregate content, water content, addition of fly ash, slag, retarder, water reducer, air entraining agent, and the mixing process parameters include mixing time, number of revolutions and curing temperature. The machine learning algorithms were analyzed based on a 5-fold cross validation approach, and two particular algorithms were then designated for fitting the actual and predicted compressive strength data. Based on the comparison for 28-day compressive strength predictions, results reveal that the XGBOOST and DNN can be suitable strength predictors for RMC. The root mean square error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Coefficient of Determination (r(2)) score of the training data of XGBOOST approach were 1.73 MPa, 1.38 MPa, 0.925, respectively. The preciseness and distribution of the data analyzed by XGBOOST, offering it to be a suitable strength prediction tool for RMC.

Urban areas worldwide recognize Transit Oriented Development (TOD) as a successful strategy to foster sustainability. Over the years, TOD has gained prominence in integrating land use and transportation and improving quality of life. In India, effective implementation of TOD should require addressing key issues such as heterogeneity and equity, policy and regulatory frameworks, financial availability, integration of multiple agencies, the risk of gentrification, and the carrying capacity within densely populated urban cores. A document analysis approach has been adopted to examine existing government policies, laws, and regulations and understand the current status of TOD implementation in Indian cities. Although the 2017 TOD Policy and Metro Rail Policy offer guidelines and regulations, there remains ambiguity concerning its implementation, particularly the responsibilities and evaluation framework, along with the lack of integration with master plans and building regulations. Findings reveal that few cities have text-based policies and emphasize that TOD's scope varies with city size and planning type. Thus, there is a need for a context-sensitive, policy-driven, and micro-level planning approach that integrates multiple aspects of TOD, including land use, social structure, travel patterns, infrastructure, and environment. This paper comprehensively explains existing TOD strategies and their challenges, forming a base for an integrated approach and evidence-based strategies to ensure sustainability.

The work presented in this paper focuses on the optimisation of the connection stiffness of modular floating islands. The connection system is described by an equivalent system consisting of linear springs whose stiffness is the objective of optimisation. A rigid-body flexible-connector approach to the problem is assumed and therefore the deformations are concentrated on the connections. The aim is to find an optimal spring stiffness solution that is compliant with dynamic constraints of human comfort and that minimises the loads acting on the connections. Acceptable human comfort values of accelerations and displacements, required by structures for residential purposes, pose new and unique challenges for the design of modular floating islands (MFIs) and plays a significant role in the design feasibility. The system has been simulated both in regular and irregular waves.

Doubler-plate reinforcement is widely used to increases the strength of tubular joints. The axial tensile behavior of doubler-plate reinforced (DPR) square hollow section (SHS) joints are studied by finite element parametric analysis in this paper. The finite element model of the DPR SHS joint is established and verified using test results from literatures. Then the geometrical parameters and material properties are changed to conduct extensive parametric studies on the tensile behavior of DPR SHS T-joint, by which the brace-to-chord width ratio and the DP-to-chord thickness ratio are identified as critical parameters. The yielding or punching of the doubler-plate is found to dominate the failure of the joints, and the membrane behavior of the doubler-plate can increase the tensile strength of the DPR joints. Finally, formulae are proposed to build design equations for the tensile strength of DPR SHS joints, and a more accurate prediction is obtained comparing to EC3.

The current state of thermal comfort among people in the tropical climate such as in Bangkok, Thailand is different from previous state due to global warming and has not been extensively studied. The outdoor and semi-outdoor conditions in winter and summer are crucial for investigating the thermal comfort. A total of 193 valid questionnaires were in-field collected from a sample group regarding to the thermal satisfaction with Thermal Sensation Vote (TSV) and factors affecting overall comfort in the summer (average temperature 33.6 +/- 1.19 degrees C) and the winter (average temperature 29.5 +/- 1.33 degrees C) in Bangkok. The results indicate that 56.70% in winter and mostly of 84.85% in summer requires to decrease in air temperature. Additionally, 60.63% in winter and 76.92% in summer of the sample group desires an increase in wind speed. These findings also indicate that air temperature and wind speed are important factors that significantly influence the perception of thermal comfort. Regarding to humidity, the majority of the sample group prefers no change in humidity during the winter (78.74%) and the summer (47.69%). This may be due to the lack of awareness among the sample group regarding the impact of humidity on perceived comfort, as they did not express a strong preference for humidity-related factors as much as would be expected.

Smart structure technology, an innovative solution for mitigating structural responses to natural hazards, diverges from conventional designs by incorporating control devices like isolators, actuators, and dampers. This approach enables structures to dynamically adapt during natural disasters, enhancing resilience and safety. Originating in the early 1900s, the technology gained global traction, primarily in Japan, and has been increasingly implemented in other parts of the world. The development of control systems has produced various types of control devices, such as passive, active, semi-active, and hybrid controls. Due to vast options, designers have a high flexibility to choose and implement the appropriate control system that suits each problem's needs. Previous scaled and real-life applications have proven the control system's robustness and reliability. Future challenges to increase control system application include addressing time delays, minimizing actuator saturation, optimization, and integrating multidisciplinary in real-life applications. Researchers have explored predictive methods, local search techniques, and metaheuristic approaches to optimize control systems. Despite hurdles, implementing smart structures presents immense potential, not only in ensuring human safety but also in preserving structures and reducing downtime during disasters. Efforts to enhance cost-efficiency, optimize control configurations, and integrate control systems seamlessly into new and existing structures mark crucial future directions.

In the dynamic world of architectural parametric design, Non-standardized Units (NSUs) have emerged as a revolutionary concept, offering benefits that traditional architectural forms cannot match. Influenced by environmental, structural, and aesthetic considerations, NSUs present challenges in fabrication and assembly due to their inherent complexity. This paper delves deep into the creation of a management system specifically designed for the digital construction of NSUs. By amalgamating insights from our research lab and global precedents in digital construction, we aim to develop a universal management system that ensures efficient, precise, and cost-effective execution of intricate NSU parametric projects. Our innovative approach integrates SQL databases with Rhino's Grasshopper, utilizing digital IDs for real-time remote data exchange. The efficacy of this system is demonstrated in an actual NSU facade project, highlighting its potential to revolutionize the digital construction of NSUs. Through this research, we aim to bridge the gap between parametric design and efficient digital construction, offering a powerful tool for future NSU projects.

Seismic Retrofitting of Tied Arch Bridge with Friction Pendulum Isolation Bearings 1

On September 28, 2018, a 7.4 M earthquake hit Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, causing damage to many bridge infrastructures. Dolago Bridge located at Parigi, 37 km from Palu, is one of the bridges affected by the earthquake. The bridge consists of three spans with a total length of 111.2 m and the middle span is a reinforced concrete tied-arch structure with a span length of 70 m. In this paper, an analytical study for seismic retrofitting using friction pendulum bearings (FPB) is presented. The proposed retrofitted system is intended to have better performance and efficient structural retrofit compared to the conventional non-isolated retrofitting strategy. Recently, there has been limited study on using FPB on seismic retrofitting systems on tied-arch bridges. The non-linear time history analysis (NLTHA) was used to analyze the existing and retrofit system using seven pairs of ground motion records representing the seismic site conditions. Seismic bridge evaluation using the new seismic bridge design code with design earthquake of 1000 years return period was conducted by evaluating several parameters including superstructure displacement and acceleration, base shear, D/C Ratio of bridge components, and bearing capacities, as well as plastic hinge formation. The results showed that the use of FPB can improve bridge performance thus minimizing potential damage and reducing the number of bridge components that need to be retrofitted.
