The potential of many novel concepts in any industry goes unnoticed when nobody invests their time and money in them. However, some floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) have gathered attention and persuaded investors due to the successful completion of a demonstration project. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of how demo projects around the world were born, what made them successful, and proposes ideas for a demo project in Taiwan. The TaidaFloat, a semi-submersible FOWT floater with slight innovations, requires a demo project to showcase its potential. The paper presents an example platform with a parametric design approach, addressing the problem of scaling down the project to demo size and constraining heave and pitch motions. The floating turbine is designed with a local supply chain capability in mind and a mooring system is proposed with a line weight reduction priority due to the limited anchor handling tugs in Taiwan. This paper provides insight into how a demonstration project can be carried out in Taiwan or locations with similar conditions across Asia-Pacific.

Thailand was impacted by the earthquake both directly and indirectly. Many structures in Chiang Rai were damaged by the large Mae Lao earthquake in 2014. This makes the government recognize how crucial it is to develop earthquake-resistant structures for public safety. Structures in many locations are required to consider designing more earthquake-resistant structures due to calculations made regarding the building structure's ability to ensure the earthquake's vibration. Several medium-rise buildings in Bangkok have been required to improve their seismic performance to fulfill the new standard and to protect them from future earthquakes. Therefore, this study investigates the validation of updated design code and efficiency of retrofitting an existing shear wall medium-rise RC building that was planned with seismic concern but not in accordance with more modern code regulations using buckling restrained braces (BRBs). In addition, the possible locations of retrofitting BRBs are investigated. A typical 36-story RC shear wall residential building in Bangkok is used as the target building. An equivalent linear static analysis is performed to investigate the seismic performance of the target building. The results indicate that the seismic performance of the retrofitted building with BRB is improved when compared to the non-retrofitted building, and the retrofitted shear wall medium-rise RC building with the damper location close to the shear wall is the most efficient when compared to other locations.

This research studied the complex dynamics of subsea pipeline rehabilitation, with a particular focus on the role of composite Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) in addressing defects of varying sizes, shapes and composite layers applied. The study finds that composite FRP repairs are influenced by defect size, with smaller defects posing challenges. However, the gradual addition of composite FRP layers enhances pipeline resilience, particularly for larger defects. The ideal number of composite FRP layers varies with defect size and irregularly shaped defects may not be effectively repaired with composite FRP. Stress failure patterns show distinctions between defect sizes, with 100 x 100 mm defects exhibiting effective composite FRP performance and 50 x 50 mm defects experiencing premature yield points. These findings highlight the key factors for repair strategies and further research to ensure effective subsea pipeline rehabilitation.

An ambitious aim of aqua culturists is to mitigate the impact of aquaculture on the marine environment, in order to achieve an environmentally sustainable marine aquaculture system. In terms of the ecological preservation of the marine aquaculture environment, closed fish cages have attracted more and more attention. In this study, a simulation of the closed fish cage tank sloshing using the three-dimensional particle method is introduced. First, the accuracy validation of the sloshing of a rectangular tank was done through comparison with the results from the previous experiments. Then, we investigated the three-dimensional sloshing characteristics of free water inside a cylindrical closed fish cage. In the numerical simulation, the inhibitory effects of the horizontal plate and netting panel on free water sloshing were also examined, respectively. It was found that the run-up height of the internal free water surface was more obvious when the external excitation period was equal to the natural period of the first mode. It was observed that the resonance point shifted to the low-frequency side when the horizontal plate was placed. Regarding the flow velocity distribution, it was found that when the horizontal plate was installed, the movement of the fluid was mainly limited to the vicinity of the water surface and the bottom of the cage, and most of the fluid did not move much from the depth of the water where the horizontal plate was placed. In addition, it was observed that under the condition of placing the net panels in the closed fish cage, the run-up height of the free water was also significantly reduced. In the future, we will explore the influence of water inflow and outflow on the flow velocity distribution inside the fish cage.

Peat is soil which composed by organic content larger than 75%. This soil contains the accumulation of fragmented plant due to decomposition process. The parent material of peat in the tropical area is commonly from woody and ferns. This type of vegetation has lignin and cellulose in high percentage which difficult to decompose. Hence, peat in the tropical area generally classified as fibrous peat (fiber content larger than 20%). The degree of decomposition which categorized from the fiber content of this peat could vary from fibric, hemic, and sapric. The fiber on peat often correspond to the compression behavior of peat. However, study about the effect of fiber content to the long-term behavior of tropical fibrous peat still limited. Therefore, this study will present the effect of variation of fiber content to the long-term compression behavior of tropical fibrous peat. The tropical fibrous peat samples were collected form Palangkaraya, Centre of Kalimantan, Indonesia. The one-dimensional consolidation test was conducted using incremental load method to reconstituted sample and undisturbed sample. The result show that the increasing of fiber content tends to increase the magnitude of immediate compression, shorten the primary compression stage, and increase the rate of secondary compression.

Construction projects are intricate, involving numerous parties for successful completion. Hence, most construction firms subcontract to boost performance, cut costs, and delegate specialized labor responsibilities. Selecting subcontractors significantly impacts project success and the general contractor's competitiveness. Unfortunately, subcontracting often lacks thorough analysis, with total cost overshadowing decisions, leading to unqualified, inexperienced, and underfunded subcontractor choices detrimental to project budgets, schedules, and quality. This research focuses on optimizing the evaluation and selection process in multifamily housing projects for the finishing stage, which is directly related to customer satisfaction, through a decision-making procedure that includes the application of the multicriteria decision-making method Choosing By Advantages. The methodology comprises information recording, traditional procedure analysis, new procedure development, and proposed procedure implementation. Furthermore, the optimization of subcontractor evaluation and selection is based on the perception of professionals, with over 5 years of experience, responsible for the subcontracting process of the evaluated project. Finally, it is concluded that the proposed procedure, which includes the application of CBA, optimizes the evaluation and selection of subcontractors by enabling a more informed final decision for the selection of finishing stage subcontractors based on the most important evaluation factors determined in the research: quality, financial capacity, experience, trained personnel, references;as well as the proposed criteria, the Likert scale, and the format developed for the application of CBA. Comparing reliability, objectivity, precision, and ease of achieving consensus, the proposal demonstrates a 20% improvement in subcontractor evaluation and selection over traditional methods.

Passenger ferry boats of various capacities operate in rivers and canals, transporting a significant number of passengers. This research examines the performance of passenger ferry services in Mumbai city, along the creeks, and harbors of the western and eastern coasts. The goal of this research is to develop a level of service categories for parameters affecting the performance of ferry service by understanding the existing scenarios. The study considers both passenger's and operators' perspectives. The outcome is in the form of a framework procedure to assess the service in the respective cities along with the suggestions for additional revenue generation for operators. The findings of this study will be useful for policymakers, academicians, and stakeholders to evaluate ferry services in their cities by altering the process according to the need. It will help decide suitable interventions and the necessary investments to be made in the water transportation sector.

In the overpopulated deltas of the Philippines, people live in areas that see floods regularly. The floods are being caused by a combination of tides, heavy rainfall and land subsidence. The demand for safe and affordable housing is immense, yet available dry land is scarce. By implementing floating homes on vacant former rice fields, demanded new building space is becoming available. To come to a sustainable design that fits in the Pampanga Delta, traditional building designs as the Bahay Kubo have been analysed by means parametric building simulations and resulted in a design for a vernacular architecture-based prototype house. This floating home has been built and is evaluated on technical performances and on occupants' experiences. This paper describes the process of the creation and outcome of a holistic design framework for a floating neighbourhood design, based on this first prototype home. A participatory approach is used to bring the community to the centre of the design process. Through this co-design process as conducted in the coastal areas of the Philippines, we take a closer look at how co-design can help tackle fragile living situations that emerge from challenging environmental and social conditions and how future scenarios are co-created with residents in the form of visual summaries, boards and relationship maps. These insights are translated into a holistic design framework, built up with fundamental urban elements, where stakeholders can discuss and further iterate on the proposed urban design solutions.

The potential of floating structures to provide climate-resilient living space has recently been acknowledged by the United Nations and the IPCC. The technical feasibility of small-scale floating structures has already been demonstrated in many projects all over the world. These projects support different functions such as housing, recreation, and energy production. What is lacking to apply this technology at a larger scale is the required integrated governance, technical, social, and ecological insights for upscaling, in order to address societal challenges such as land scarcity and climate impacts. These insights are needed to move from "proof-of-concept" to "proof-of-scale". Although the technical challenges of upscaling floating structures have already received attention in the international research community, and some research results have been published about the ecological impacts recently, the social aspects and stakeholder acceptance of large-scale floating developments are still considered a knowledge gap. This article therefore explores the social conditions that would enable the stakeholder acceptance of large-scale floating developments. By a scientific literature review, we investigate which insights and lessons can be derived that influence stakeholder acceptance of large-scale floating developments. Theoretical frameworks and concepts that are studied include the following: resilience, transformation, receptivity theories on social value and governance. Additionally, we will draw lessons from realized projects in the Netherlands and discussions of the Thinktank "Governance of Floating Cities". While the investigated projects still have a relatively small scale, we expect that some of the success factors are also relevant for the upscaling of floating structures internationally. Finally, based on the results, we will draw up recommendations for future research on this topic.

In our country, there has been a limited amount of research conducted on inland water transport due to its relatively uncommon usage. However, it is crucial for cities with access to waterways to promote and optimize this affordable and sustainable mode of transportation. Kochi, a city in Kerala, is one such example with an existing inland water transport system that offers significant travel time reduction compared to road transport. Despite this advantage, the ridership of the water transport system in Kochi has not met expectations. With the road infrastructure and public transportation nearing saturation, there is a pressing need to prioritize and enhance the utilization of water transport for the city's future. The purpose of this study is to analyze Kochi's existing water transport system, evaluate its current usage, and assess both its strengths and weaknesses. A gap observed is that not much research has been done on water transport as it is not a common means of public transport service. The study investigates the demographic and socioeconomic profiles of the catchment areas surrounding these stations, as well as their accessibility, dispersal patterns, and overall characteristics. To assess the potential impact of proposed improvements, stated preference data and fuzzy logic mode choice modeling were utilized. By employing this approach, the study aims to evaluate how ridership may change following the implementation of recommendations derived from identified issues and concerns. In summary, the study delves into the existing water transport system in Kochi, taking into account its ridership and various characteristics of selected stations. By addressing the identified challenges, the aim is to encourage greater utilization of water transport and ensure its viability and effectiveness as a mode of transportation in the city. The concluding observations revealed a notable 15% rise in the modal shift towards water transport within the chosen catchment areas.
