Traffic noise threat is higher at intersections in mid-sized cities due to complex road geometry, reckless driving, heterogeneous traffic flow and poor traffic management. Traffic noise reduces the quality of life and causes negative impacts on health. Annoyance is a commonly reported problem due to traffic noise, which can mediate various health problems, including cardiovascular disease, sleep disturbances, and stress. Therefore, the current study aims to analyse annoyance levels at intersections in mid-sized cities. Various personal and situational factors such as gender, age, and education affect the annoyance levels. This study investigates the effect of individual characteristics and traffic noise levels on annoyance levels at intersections in mid-sized cities. For this, hourly equivalent noise level (Leq) due to road traffic is measured near the facades and individual characteristics (i.e., age, gender, income, education, exposure hour, and noise sensitivity) are measured based on the community survey at 15 intersections in Kanpur. In addition, the annoyance level of a person is measured during different activities such as conversing, reading, resting, sleeping, using phone, watching TV, and working. The results indicate that gender, age, and income do not significantly affect annoyance, while noise sensitivity, education, exposure hours and Leq significantly affect annoyance levels. Noise sensitivity has the highest effect on annoyance among people residing at intersections, followed by education, exposure hour, and Leq. The developed PLS-SEM model has a 69% capability to explain the variance in annoyance levels at intersections in mid-sized cities. This finding has important implications for public health interventions, as it suggests that targeting noise sensitivity could effectively reduce negative effects of traffic noise on health.

As reported in the most recent IPCC report (2022), the risk of flooding in Europe has increased over the last five decades, becoming the second largest cause of both economic and social losses caused by climate change-induced extreme events. Nowadays, the adaptation of vulnerable urban areas has become a priority objective in the political and legislative management of cities. Among the different architectural measures to adapt the city to the negative externalities caused by the rise in the mean sea level is the design of amphibious buildings (AB) to reduce the vulnerability of private space in the city. ABs are buildings composed of a structure that allows flotation while remaining anchored to the point of origin on land. During floods, the floating foundation of ABs allows it to rise from the ground and float on the surface of floodwater. Although several AB prototypes are nowadays built both in North America and Asia, only four projects have already been built in Europe. The aim of the article is to collect, catalog and describe the characteristics of ABs as a response to urban flood risk. Methodologically, the architectural qualities of ABs are researched by comparing, through a matrix, the four constructed European cases. Then, the architectural qualities are investigated in a SWOT matrix analysis. Indeed, through a review of the existing cases, with a focus on data related to the construction and implementation of ABs in the urban fabric, results are presented on the parameters of safety, purpose, aesthetics, technology, sustainability, utility, and cost-efficiency. We consider that through the orderly classification and cataloging of the state of the art of built AB buildings, it is possible to define new paths for architectural and urban implementation in order to respond to the need for urban adaptation to extreme water events.

Understanding the urban network's structure is essential to comprehend how a city's traffic moves. A well-planned city can be distinguished from a demand-oriented development, where the road network is created based on traffic demand rather than a plan, using the topology of the road network. Though the usual measures of understanding the formation of a road network, including the road network density, the junction density, average path length, etc., aid in characterizing the road network, they are weak in explaining the importance or influence of specific nodes/links in the network. Betweenness centrality is particularly relevant for understanding urban movement patterns because it quantifies the extent to which a node lies on the shortest paths between other nodes. Nodes with high betweenness centrality are often located on important routes that facilitate efficient transportation and experience a higher flow of traffic. As betweenness centrality highlights the important edges present in a network there should, hypothetically, exist a correlation between the width of the road segments and their corresponding betweenness. The current study aims to mathematically quantify the correlation between the widths of different road segments in the network and their corresponding betweenness centralities. The topological analysis is conducted for the road network of Ludhiana City of Punjab. The final value of correlation is interpreted and further policy implications are discussed.

SIFCON can be considered as a special type of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) where the fiber content is ranging from 4 to 20%, the method of its casting has a specified way in which the fiber is infiltrated by cement-based slurry. In this paper, the experimental work of testing SIFCON corbels subjected to vertical loads is presented. Six corbels which had fractional volume of the steel fibers 6%, 8% and 10% and two values of shear span/effective depth ratio (a/d) (0.35 and 0.7) were tested in addition to one specimen reinforced with steel bars and 6% steel fibers. It was found the ultimate strength and ductility increased by the increase of the content of steel fibers, the best performance of corbels was for specimen with steel bars and a/d equal to 0.35.

This research investigates the confluence of design and structure through bamboo and tectonic thinking in the formative education of architecture design studios. The project focuses on utilizing bamboo as a sustainable and adaptable material in architectural design education to promote a comprehensive grasp of the relationship between design principles and structural considerations. The study examines the instructional strategies and methodology for incorporating tectonic thinking and bamboo in architecture design studios. It investigates how using bamboo as a primary material might improve students' comprehension of how form, function, and structure interact. It involves a review of existing literature and case studies to identify practices and examples of integrating bamboo and tectonic thinking in architectural design education. The study aims to provide insights into effective teaching strategies and curricular frameworks that support the integration of bamboo and tectonic thinking in architectural design studios. The findings of this research will benefit educators, students, and practitioners in architecture. By incorporating bamboo and tectonic thinking in formative education, students develop appreciation for sustainable design practices, gain practical knowledge of working with bamboo as a material, and understand the importance of structural integrity in their design solutions. In conclusion, this research highlights the significance of integrating design and structure by applying tectonic thinking with bamboo in the formative education of architecture design studios.

Pedestrian gap acceptance behavior becomes more critical at unsignalized, unmarked midblock crossings due to complex interactions of pedestrians with moving vehicles. The critical gap is an essential parameter in exploring the gap acceptance behavior. This paper analyzes the gap acceptance behavior of pedestrians crossing an un-signalized mid-block with no marked crosswalk through critical gaps. Existing literature has many methods for estimating the critical gaps, such as Clearing time, Greenshield's, Raff's, and Harder's methods. The present study aims to estimate and compare the critical gaps for pedestrians crossing individually and in a group at the un-signalized midblock section for morning and evening peak times. The study also explores the perceived risk of crossing pedestrians at the un-signalized mid-block section under study. Accordingly, the data were recorded using a videographic survey at an un-signalized unmarked midblock crossing in Delhi, India. Further, the Dartfish software was used to extract vehicular gaps with an accuracy of 20 ms (0.020 s), resulting in 3126 lags/gaps data of 635 pedestrians. Subsequently, the critical gaps were estimated and compared using (a) Clearing time, (b) Greenshield's, (c) Raff's, and (d) Harder's methods. The study found that critical gaps using Greenshield's, Raff's, and Harder's methods are lower than the Clearing time method. The findings suggested that the Clearing time method is the most appropriate for estimating critical gaps in Indian traffic conditions. The study results would help urban planners and policymakers evaluate safety performances and design pedestrian crossing facilities accordingly.

Based on the design checking method of integral cast-in-place wind tower foundation, considering the stiffness reduction effect and the change of stress characteristics brought by assembly technology, the design checking method of typical assembled fan foundation stress performance is put forward, which includes four aspects: foundation overall stability index, foundation overall bearing capacity index, joint bending performance and joint shear performance. The overall stability index of foundation can be subdivided into six parts: foundation void rate, foundation bearing capacity, foundation settlement, foundation rotation angle, anti-slip and anti-overturning, and the overall bearing capacity index of foundation can be subdivided into bending resistance, shear resistance and punching resistance. Finally, based on Python programming language, the program checking method of typical assembled fan foundation is designed, which realizes the purpose of parametric analysis and instantaneous results.

China's current national standards, industry standards derived from the maximum crack width formula from different theoretical and experimental data, making the structural components of the crack control level and the maximum crack width limit value are different. In order to have a deeper understanding of the maximum crack width limit and the impact of concrete protective layer thickness on the amount of reinforced concrete structural reinforcement, the amount of reinforced concrete structural reinforcement in different specifications is compared and analyzed, so that the engineering design can provide a sufficient basis for calculation.

The concrete cap is an important support structure for stationary offshore wind power, and its construction efficiency and long-term performance are very important for the healthy service of wind power equipment. Taking the 4.8 MW of the high-rise pile reinforced concrete cap foundation (RCCF) in China as a case study, a novel composite concrete cap is proposed by using prefabricated UHPC stay-in-place (USIP) formwork in the construction stage, forming a UHPC composite concrete cap foundation (UCCF) in this paper. The concept development of UCCF, including structure composition, structure advantages and construction methods are introduced. On this basis, the comprehensive study of mechanical behavior under the ultimate limit state is analyzed.

Access to proper means of mobility is a primary need that allows citizens to obtain economic and social opportunities. However, gender, a key demographic variable that influences travel behaviour is often neglected in city transport planning. Various studies have shown that the travel requirements and behaviour of women differ widely from men. Yet historically, urban transport planning has overlooked the mobility needs of women, who are more likely to use low-carbon emitting modes. The failure of urban transport systems to consider gender as an important variable for transport planning places heavy constraints on women, particularly those belonging to low-income groups because of their greater dependence on public transport. In this context, the current study delved into mobility and sociological parameters that influence travel patterns of female commuters in Delhi based on online surveys conducted to bring forth the influence of different travel characteristics. Among non-motorised transport, men prefer to both walk and cycle;however, women prefer only walking. A larger proportion of women prefer public transport to men and access to personal transport is limited for women than men in long-distance travel segment. Most of the women who are currently not using public transport have indicated willingness to shift, provided public transport stops are located within a comfortable distance. Based on the survey analysis, the paper argues for a more comprehensive and gender-inclusive transport policy that provides a strong foundation for attaining Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 11.2.
