Floating nuclear power plants promise an effective pathway to reducing greenhouse emission caused by the use of fossil fuels. This solution is made possible because of advances made in reducing the size (thereby making them transportable) of nuclear reactors and manufacturing under roof to modular (replicable) designs. Current trends of building such floating power plants in shipyard facilities and deploying them with little consideration for their security require a major shift in mindset. The risk of state terrorism is real. Major power plants deployed offshore warrant the highest form of strategic security. A floating nuclear power plant is easy to destroy. What destroyed the Nord Stream pipelines can likewise destroy a floating nuclear power plant. The difference is that the consequences could be a lot more serious. This paper offers a concept to protect floating nuclear power plants deployed at sea. To start off, a quick walk through about carbon dioxide and carbon capture and storage in the context of global warming is useful to better appreciate why we need nuclear energy in the first place.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted how people travel, particularly in terms of the choices they make regarding transportation modes. While there is debate about the temporary nature of travel behaviour changes during COVID-19, it continues to be a topic of study in different geographical contexts. The disparities in travel options among cities of varying sizes may have had distinct impacts on travel patterns during COVID-19 restrictions and in the post-pandemic era. To analyse the argument, this paper compares the shift in mode choice behaviour for commuting before and after COVID-19. Two multinomial logit models were estimated to analyse work trips, utilising 344 observations from a Pan-India online survey conducted in the late 2021 and early 2022 period. The findings demonstrate the substantial influence of variables such as family size, gender, income, and education on individuals' decision-making regarding their mode of transportation forwork. The findings also indicate that the size of the city and the number of vehicles owned significantly influence the choice of commuting modes.

An interest in the dynamic behavior of railway bridges subjected to high-speed trains in Indonesia increased within the construction of the first high-speed railway. Under high-speed trains, with speeds over 200 km/h, the dynamic effect has often been shown to be the governing parameter of bridge design, therefore a dynamic analysis is required. This paper presents a dynamic analysis of a simply supported railway bridge due to high-speed trains through moving axle loads using finite element models. The influence parameters of train and bridges i.e., train speeds, train loading configurations, and bridge span length on the dynamic responses of railway bridges is investigated. The effect of the delay time between entries of the trains on the double-track bridge is also examined. From the analysis, the dynamic responses of the railway bridge in terms of accelerations, deformations, and moments were obtained, and the critical or resonant speed over the speed range was identified. Dynamic amplification factors (DAF) are also determined from the dynamic responses and compared to current standards. Using the findings from this study, the influence of certain parameters on the dynamic behavior of high-speed railway bridges can be determined particularly for the preliminary design stages.

The study aims to understand the wave motion characteristics of the Optiflow concept, a low-rigidity FOWT with a guy-wire supported tower, through wave tank experiments and numerical calculations using UTWind code. Three main effects were investigated: wave height, wave direction, and mooring line configuration. The Optiflow presented nonlinear motion behavior in waves as wave height effects due to the different levels of viscous damping. The single-point mooring system played a significant role;thus, a coupling of vertical motions (heave, pitch, and sometimes roll) was observed. In addition, it showed a different behavior due to the wave incidence angle. First-order motions were affected by the mooring line configurations as not expected from oil and gas knowledge;thus, the effect of the mooring line can be pronounced for very-light FOWT as the Optiflow. Additionally, the cancelation point (or waveless) response was observed as typical behavior of semi-submersible type floaters in all the experiments. The comparison of the results from the experiment and numerical UTWind code simulations confirmed that the agreement was satisfactory except for the resonance period since the viscous effect had a significant impact on motions, which was not accurately considered in the numerical code.

In urban areas, on-street parking is considered a standard feature, despite its advantages and disadvantages. Numerous researchers identified on-street parking as a significant side friction factor and a more pressing issue in developing nations. Especially when it exists near signalized intersections for reasons such as insufficient sight distance, unused green time, decreased capacity at signalized intersections, etc. The various editions of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) [HCM. Highway Capacity Manual (2010) (vol. 3) Transportation Research Board] provide the fundamental concepts and techniques for estimating saturation flow (SF), primarily for lane-based homogeneous traffic patterns with different adjustment factors, including for on-street parking. On-street parking was viewed as a categorical variable, either 'absence' or 'presence' in the vast majority of research conducted worldwide. These techniques are inapplicable in developing nations with heterogeneous, non-lane-based traffic and largely unauthorized on-street parking. Also, the Indian Highway Capacity Manual (Indo-HCM) [Indo-HCM (2017) Indian Highway Capacity Manual (Indo-HCM). In: CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, NewDelhi] does not address the effect of on-street parking near signalized intersections. The objective of the present study is to determine the impact of on-street parking near signalized intersections and to identify its influencing zone. The present study collected data from eight signalized intersections, including four base and non-base sections each, located in different regions of India (Delhi, Kerala, and Maharashtra) to examine the variation in traffic composition, driver characteristics, land use, and control conditions. As the effects of global climate change are causing increasingly severe weather disasters, it has been reported that the annual maximum significant wave height, which is important in the calculation of design waves for offshore structures that will be in service for a long period of time, is increasing year by year. Therefore, we analyzed wave observation data for Japan up to the year 2020 and identified the type of meteorological disturbance when the maximum significant annual wave height was observed. Among the wave observation sites on the Pacific side of Honshu, 87% of the sites showed an increase in maximum significant annual wave height. Among these, typhoons were mainly responsible for the increase in annual maximum significant wave heights, especially at the stations located south of the bay mouth. Analysis of the RSMC best track data shows that the number of typhoons per year tends to decrease, while the intensity of individual typhoons tends to increase. Since typhoons are greatly affected by sea surface temperature (SST), we compared the 100year SST increase in the southern Japanese archipelago with the global average and found that the SST increase is twice as large as the global average. Therefore, typhoon intensity is expected to increase in the long term, and the annual maximum significant wave height on the Pacific side of Honshu is expected to increase accordingly.

Based on the findings of various previous studies on Itsukushima Shrine, this study focuses on the "cloister," which contributes greatly to the creation of the shrine's headland landscape and the mitigation of natural disasters brought by the sea. This paper reviews and reexamines previous discourses and discussions on landscape creation and responses to natural disasters. The paper reviews the history of the construction of the sea shrine pavilions at Itsukushima Shrine and examines the measures taken to mitigate the impact of the sea on the shrine pavilions, including the cloister, based on the sea conditions. As a result of this study, it was found that the screened corridor contributes to mitigating the buoyancy caused by the rising sea level during the storm surge by about 6%, and the wave transmission coefficient is about 0.3 for a wave with a period of 3.5 s, if the floor of the corridor is considered as a submerged flat plate and the screen is ignored. Therefore, the floorboard of the corridor is expected to reduce the energy of the short-period transmitted waves to the main building behind the corridor. However, it is difficult to accept the idea that the floorboards of the corridor were designed to reduce the energy of the waves.

As floating city developments attract further global attention as potential solutions to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals and to address coastal land pressures, increased flooding and rising sea levels, the complexities associated with permitting frameworks and the legal consequences for deployment of floating city projects are intensifying. However, these floating city proposals are not a new phenomenon. Instead, they are part of the resurgence of various floating city developments that held fascination for the international community during the 1950s to the 1970s. Despite this long fascination with floating cities, the volume of floating city proposals has not yielded law reform or sustained judicial consideration of the concept of the floating city despite some schemes reaching a level of sophistication to even be granted patents. This paper is aimed at designers and engineers and seeks to identify broad legal issues that emerge from the structural characteristics of floating structures. The design choices made in the selection of structural elements have implications on the legal status of the overall structure, such as whether a floating structure is treated as real property (land) or personal property (chattel). By extension, the impact on the legal status of these floating structures then has a flow-on effect on the legal status of floating city developments that take shape from a wide spectrum of arrangements of these floating structures, such as fixed platforms, floating pontoons to assemblages of barges. This paper examines the legal complexities emerging in various national jurisdictions by undertaking a global survey of cases involving judicial interpretation of floating structures and the more definitionally challenging, 'floating city', based on their structural characteristics. With the number of metro rail systems in Indian cities growing, there is an intensifying focus on boosting ridership and improving land utilization around mass transit. The National Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Policy has given this concern its legitimacy by offering guidelines to cities and states. Among other things, a decisive factor influencing such planning efforts is the delineation of station areas. Many of the concepts and practices of Station Area Planning (SAP) rely on thumb rules and 'best practices' that are often replicated from studies and projects carried out in widely differing contexts. Our study seeks to initiate a debate on the downside of such an approach in planning practice and policymaking. Using secondary datasets, a case comparison has been developed across select Indian cities with metro rail facilities. We argue that SAPs are a highly context-sensitive strategy, which demand a thorough examination. By discounting the importance of a wide range of contextual factors, templatizing influence areas can have perverse results. There is, hence, a dire need to understand the nuances of area delineation more thoroughly before embarking on empirical investigations of policy interlinkages. It is our belief that by serving to initiate debate on these lines, it is possible to achieve multiple objectives that cities are constantly striving for.

The design of transportation facilities mostly focuses on the need for vehicle and road geometries with less emphasis placed on pedestrian safety, comfort, and convenience. Pedestrian speed plays a crucial role in both transportation planning and the design of pedestrian facilities. So, the present study is focused on pedestrian crossing behavior at signalized intersections and mid-block sections considering the presence and absence of possible affecting parameters. Several parameters like the signal countdown display at the intersection, length of crossway, age and gender of the pedestrians, pedestrians moving alone or in a group, road geometry, and existing traffic volume in mid-block sections were considered while assessing the crossing characteristics of pedestrians. Considering the most effective parameters, multiple regression models were developed for estimating the speed of pedestrians while crossing through the signalized intersections and mid-block sections. The performance of the proposed models indicates an accurate assessment of pedestrian crossing speed in Indian traffic scenarios. Therefore, the present study will be useful for designing pedestrian signals and providing required facilities in mid-block sections to increase the ease and safety of pedestrian movements in crossways.
