Internal insulation is often the only measure to reduce heat loss for facades that are worth preservation, both from a sustainable and architectural point of view. However, insulation from inside may make the original wall vulnerable for moisture related problems. Recent years, quite a lot of research on moisture safe internal insulation of solid brick masonry walls has been conducted. This study takes up the challenge of transforming the experiences from solid brick masonry walls to facades of modern/industrial era up to 1980's. Brick masonry is still often on the exterior side but combined with concrete or light weight concrete on the interior side with or without a cavity. Hardly any research on this topic has been conducted and therefore this paper introduces some first investigations of the hygrothermal performance of retrofitting above types of facades from inside. The study is conducted as a simulation study, where a number of relevant constructions and insulation systems are analysed. Solid brick masonry is used as reference. The results indicate that internal insulation has a good potential for most masonry facades of modern/industrial era. However, insulating solid concrete facades from inside is only possible under certain circumstances.

Precipitation non-uniformity is an important feature of regional geography and development, based on the day-by-day precipitation data from 17 air stations using linear trend study, Mann-Kendall mutation test, precipitation concentration (PCD) and precipitation concentration period (PCP) indicators to analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of precipitation non-uniformity in this Qilian Mountains from 1960 to 2017. The results show that;the temporal distribution, precipitation is increasing trend and mainly concentrated in July, PCD overall value close to 1, PCP interannual change is not obvious;spatial distribution, Qilian Mountains average annual precipitation spatial distribution there are obvious differences, the overall presentation of the southeast more than the northwest, the monthly precipitation spatial distribution is basically the same, the total amount of precipitation south slope is greater than the north slope, and PCD and PCP spatial basically the same;the M-K mutation The M-K mutation test concluded that the precipitation headquarters in Qilian Mountains showed an increasing trend, the mutation occurred before and after 2002, and the upward trend was significant after 2006;there was no significant difference between the PCD and PCP in the Qilian Mountains in the watery year and the watery year, and the fluctuation of the PCD and the PCP had a significant effect on the annual precipitation.

With the increase of the construction length of a single tunnel and the traffic density in the tunnel year by year, the consequences of tunnel fire are becoming more and more serious, and the tunnel fire has gradually become a catastrophic problem in the operation and management of highway tunnel. The cause of the fire in the highway tunnel is complex, but its root is due to the people, car, road and environmental individual elements or each element fault or uncoordinated between produce fire, fire in the occurrence, development process, show different material and energy characteristics, and present different change rule, which can analyze the parameters of the characteristics of fire formation process. However, due to the complex environmental factors in the tunnel, some perceived parameters of fire characteristics will be hidden. In order to get the effective characterization characteristics and robustness parameters in the tunnel operation environment, this paper studies the effective characteristics of the sensing parameters in the process.

Module-linked floating structures are composed by linking and connecting multiple floating modules. The structural system can be used for long term to change its scale, arrangement, and shape with demand on social needs. Moreover, when a module which has functions of energy generation system such as the wind turbine is introduced to the system, a self-support type floating offshore structure may be realized. However, investigation on hydroelastic behavior is to be necessary because the response for wind and wave of the whole structure is variable by the location of the wind turbine. In this study, an evaluation method of hydroelastic behavior of module-linked floating structures with a wind turbine module is presented. In this study, the hydroelastic behavior of the structure is analyzed by using stationary random vibration theory and wet-mode superposition method. The motion for variable wind speed and irregular wave is assumed to follow an ergodic process. In the analysis, the floating structure is discretized by finite elements (FE), whereas the seawater region is discretized by boundary elements (BE). In numerical example, variation of the hydroelastic response of the structure by the location of a module with a 4.5 MW class wind turbine is discussed.

Growing global concern about progressive collapse in building structures under abnormal loads has driven extensive research on enhancing resistance through advanced design and retrofit solutions. This paper introduces innovative retrofit strategies using steel bracing and rooftop outrigger-belt truss systems tailored for hospital buildings. These systems improve vertical stiffness and strength with minimal additional mass and sections, enabling rapid, low-impact, and reversible implementation while maintaining uninterrupted building operations during retrofitting. Nonlinear dynamic analyses of real hospital buildings highlight significant improvements in load redistribution and collapse resistance, offering an efficient and sustainable solution for critical infrastructures.

To increase the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix, buildings must provide energy flexibility to the grid. Model Predictive Control (MPC) has proven to be instrumental in activating the energy flexibility of buildings. MPC requires a predictive model to capture the thermal behavior of a building. These models require operational data from the building. The quality of these datasets affects the predictive model's performance and, in turn, the energy flexibility. A dataset could be obtained by exciting the building using conventional controllers or randomly generated signals. Using a random excitation causes thermal discomfort for the occupants while using data from a traditional controller might not generate a dataset suitable to train predictive models. This study aims to assess the effect of the excitation signal of a dataset used for training an MPC's predictive model to harness a dwelling's energy flexibility. The under-study dwelling is equipped with underfloor heating coupled with an air-to-water heat pump. First, building is excited with three excitation signals: a Pseudo-Random Binary Sequence (PRBS), Rule-Based Controller (RBC) and Random Set-point Tracking (RST). Second, predictive models trained by each excitation signal are employed in an MPC framework to maximize the energy flexibility of a dwelling. The findings reveal that it is feasible to excite a building in a way that the thermal comfort of the occupants is guaranteed while the identification dataset is rich enough to generate a robust predictive model. Such predictive model would lead to high energy flexibility activation of the dwelling.

The influence of cyclic loading on the deformation response of granular materials is usually described using the shakedown concept. The shakedown response can be characterized into different shakedown regions such as plastic shakedown, plastic creep and incremental collapse regions depending on the incremental plastic strains that occur in each loading cycle. Though different incremental strain limits are proposed in literature for different granular materials, the boundaries between these three stages in terms of stresses are still unclear. In this paper, the influence of loading conditions such as loading magnitude, frequency of loading, confining stress etc. and material compositions such as rubber content on the shakedown behavior of different granular mixtures is investigated. It is found that the normalized cyclic stress ratio which is a ratio of the cyclic stress amplitude to material's peak strength under static loading conditions can be used as a threshold value separating the plastic shakedown stage and plastic creep stages. By looking at laboratory data on two different granular materials, a unified criterion for estimating the shakedown limit under a wide range of loading and mixture properties is presented.

The Philippines faces regular natural disasters, including tropical typhoons. These strong winds, particularly from typhoons, can damage structures, especially non-engineered residential buildings. Despite limited solutions for mitigating natural disaster impact, biomimicry offers a potential approach. Biomimicry imitates Nature's principles to create sustainable solutions with minimal energy use. By applying this concept, the study aims to analyze and apply biomimetic design to enhance the wind resistance of residential structures in the Philippines. This research paper focuses on assessing the impact of wind forces on typical residential houses versus houses with biomimetic design, utilizing Autodesk Simulation CFD for aerodynamic simulations. Wind speeds ranging from 60 to 290 kph represent tropical depressions to super typhoons. The study employs structured observation techniques to compare wind pressure and lateral resisting force between the house types. The simulated Biomimetic house underwent wind speeds of 60 kph, 88 kph, 117 kph, 220 kph, and 290 kph. The front and side of the house showed a mean pressure of 0.81208754 kPa and 0.62699424 kPA, respectively, meeting NSCP standards for Open, Hip, Dutch-type, and Jerkinhead houses. Using statistical tools for determining the significant difference between the biomimetic house data and NSCP provisions for various types of houses, the study's findings affirm the reliability and safety of the simulated Biomimetic house, which can endure wind pressures compared to those experienced by different house types. These insights are valuable for architecture, engineering, and construction professionals seeking to design and construct houses resilient to extreme weather conditions, including strong winds.

Many parts of the world including Australia are increasingly prone to bushfires because of hot and dry climate made worse by climate change. Integral bridges in bushfire-prone areas are at risk of bushfire outbreaks which generate large and rapid ambient temperature increases. As is well known, integral bridges are designed without any joints on the bridge deck to avoid recurring maintenance problems caused by bridge joints, but the consequence is significant, thermal movements of the bridge deck will be transferred to the end abutments, which interact with the adjacent backfill. In the event of a bushfire, the thermal movements of the end abutments that are normally in response to cyclical diurnal and seasonal ambient temperature changes will be significantly accentuated. The soil-structure interactions of the integral abutment subjected to the effects of bushfires are not well understood and have received little research attention despite their potential to cause negative impact. Therefore, this study has conducted physical modeling to simulate the soil-structure interactions under a critical bushfire scenario to investigate the stress ratcheting on the abutment wall at the abutment-backfill interface. The physical model was designed to maintain the same strain and stress levels as a 1.92 m high prototype integral abutment. The study provided interesting insights into the immediate and residual effects on the lateral pressure acting on the integral abutment during and after the bushfire event.
