Australia is currently experiencing the largest infrastructure boom in its history, with an estimated $1,177 billion of engineering work being undertaken in the last 10 years with no sign of slowing. The Port of Melbourne Rail Transformation Project currently under construction is a prime example of being limited by competing major projects and supply chain issues. The primary pavement for this project is a cement bound crushed rock (approx. 800 mm thick) with a 200 mm proprietary asphalt wearing course designed to withstand the loading from reach stackers. Due to the constraints put on this project from the competing goliath projects, access to suitable plant-mixed cement-treated crushed rock material was not possible. Therefore, an international first innovative approach of using multiple lifts of in situ stabilisation was developed to overcome the supply chain issues and still deliver a pavement that conformed to the facility's strict performance and maintenance requirements. The new method was developed in consultation with WSP experts from Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Rather than having the material mixed at a batch plant and brought to site ready for final compaction, unbound granular material was delivered to site and in situ stabilised. In situ stabilisation isn't new to Australia, but due to the total thickness of the pavement, it was required to be undertaken in at least three lifts. This paper will provide an overview of the key points from the specification WSP developed for the contractor to deliver the innovative approach, and the test method adopted to determine if the crucial interlayer bonding criteria is met.

This work stems from an extensive campaign of localization and surveying of historic masonry walls in Opus Reticulatum, found in the Campania region. Surveys were conducted at significant sites such as Pompei, Herculaneum and Paestum. The primary aim is to typologically define the masonry walls, identifying common characteristics in terms of texture, dimensions, and materials. The prototype test walls, replicated according to the collected data, are analysed by micro-mechanical Finite Element models to provide a preliminary understanding of the mechanical behaviour under axial and diagonal compression. The micro-modelling procedure involved the definition of the mechanical behaviour of the mortar, the bricks and the stones. Model parameters were calibrated using limited experimental test results available in literature on individual components of the masonry. This research wishes to contribute to a deeper understanding of historic masonry structures and lays the groundwork for further investigations.

In the 19th and 20th century steel arch bridges were constructed from slender profile members, mostly assembled by riveting. Many of these structures are now considered as heritage. Most compressed members, in particular arches are supplemented by complex horizontal bracings. The latter were intended to increase lateral stiffness and to prevent any stability issue of compressed members. In general these bracings are abundant and even exaggerated. The conservation of heritage structures is important and contributes for the cultural legacy of mankind. Yet, often these structures are insufficiently maintained and show deteriorations of many kinds. Corrosion is sometimes heavy in bracings, since these are complicated members and are exposed. The question then arises whether some parts of the bracings are really necessary. Replacing bracings may show too much risk and removal of the deteriorated parts may not harm the efficiency of the arch. In this study 2 examples are assessed with regard to excessive bracing. The first is the Stambolov bridge in Bulgaria, the second being the 'Pont de Fetinne' in Liege (B) across river Ourthe, near its confluent with river Meuse. For Stambolov bridge a considerable number of bracing elements can be removed without further consequence. In the case of Fetinne bridge 2 scenario's for eliminating bracing members are possible. Both examples demonstrate the possibility to reduce the complexity of the horizontal bracings.

In sparse climatic data dry regions where calculated drought indices are incompatible and inefficient which leads to insistence on precise indices that are used to assess drought for monitoring. This study acquired remotely sensed images from Landsat-5, 7, and 8 under different periods from 1985 to 2021 in the Amman-Zarqa Basin (AZB). The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and theVegetation Condition Index (VCI) were employed to monitor the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of drought conditions in AZB. The findings suggest that mild to moderate drought in the northeast and southeast parts of the basin emerged. From a temporal perspective, most basin parts exhibited relative fluctuations in drought intensity over the past 35 years. The third quarter blushed negative NDVI values and was dominated by reducing green cover and land productivity. Drought frequency based on VCI analysed, and indicated that light drought areas became moderate and severe drought areas.

A crucial and challenging issue in existing path-following control of the underactuated surface vessel (USV) is high designed complexity and heavy communication load. In this note, a robust control scheme is proposed to handle the above mentioned issues. The control scheme is divided into two modules: guidance and control. In the former, a L1-based triggering guidance is introduced to solve the overshoot problem at waypoints, and the transmission frequency of the desired heading angle is reduced. In the control module, we present the robust bounded compensating technique to approximate nonlinearities of vessel model. Besides, the dynamic event-triggered control (DETC) technique is used to ease the wear of actuators. Finally, the practicability and superiority of the control system are verified through numerical experiment.

This study delves into the development and investigation of composite components by impregnating a highly porous mineral-based material (Ca2SiO4) with two different paraffinic Phase Change Materials (PCMs) characterised by diverse melting and crystallisation temperatures. The host porous material exhibits a remarkable PCM absorption, exceeding 57 wt%. While the latent heat values of composites incorporating PCMs were found to be lower than those of pure PCMs, they notably enhance the storage heat capacity of the porous material. Specifically, composite samples exhibited latent heat of fusion (LHF) values between 77 and 113 J/g, 52% lower than pure PCMs, and a transition temperature of 29-30 degrees C. The results underline the effectiveness of calcium silicate panels as a highly suitable host material for PCMs. The implications of these findings are substantial, particularly for scaling up the development and production of PCMs-based panels for building applications.

In Australia, a substantial quantity of metallurgical by-products, known as slag, is produced yearly, with the majority of slag generated from iron and steel-making industries. Common types of slag include blast furnace slag (BFS), granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), and basic oxygen furnace slag (BOFS) (also known as steel slag). The BFS and GBFS have been successfully used in many engineering applications. However, fine BOFS (particle size <6 mm) has limited engineering applications due to the high percentages of free lime and magnesium oxide, which have a high potential to swell. This research focusses on stabilising BOFS using GBFS, a pozzolanic material. A detailed study was performed to understand the index properties, shear and swell behaviour for the selected blends of BOFS-GBFS. The BOFS and GBFS samples procured from the site were classified as well-graded sandy soil with gravel and poorly graded sand, and the results from the accelerated swell tests indicate that swelling in BOFS was reduced exponentially from 2.56 to 0.23% by adding 50% GBFS to BOFS. However, the peak deviatoric stress was decreased with an increased GBFS content. For instance, the peak friction angle (phi(peak)) was reduced to almost 40% for the blend with 50% GBFS. The optimal ratio of GBFS to BOFS for the road base application was identified between 25 and 30%, with swelling <1% and peak friction angle >43 degrees.

In buildings that have a large share of the world's total energy consumption, reducing carbon emissions and zero energy building targets have become increasingly important in recent years. The most important problems in providing energy efficiency in building design are the difficulty in integrating energy efficient design tools into the design processes and the need for extra labor and time. Rapidly developing technology and digitalization processes create new advantages in zero energy building targets. However, there is not enough information about how to integrate these new technologies into zero energy design and operation processes. Therefore, in this study, the zero-energy building target is discussed in the context of BIM, generative design and digital twin, which are important technological thresholds for the building sector. The concept of zero-energy building and literature examined, zero-energy building parameters and strategies are determined, the concept of BIM and its use in zero energy buildings are discussed. In addition, the integration of generative design into BIM and energy efficient design is studied. In the last stage, the potential and usage areas of building digital twin technologies were investigated and their integration into zero energy building and BIM processes was enquired. As a result, through the information obtained from research, a decision support system framework consisting of four steps, based on the use and integration of current technologies that can contribute to zero energy building design and operation processes towards the aim of zero energy building, developed and presented.

Fluidisation in saturated subgrades of transport infrastructure is a huge problem in many countries around the world caused by dynamic cyclic loads due to heavy haul trains on railways and heavy trucks on highways. The mechanism of subgrade fluidisation has been experimentally studied to a significant extent. However, numerical studies that have been carried out for studying fluidisation are limited. The first part of the paper includes a critical review of previous studies on the mechanism and the effect of cyclic loading factors on fluidisation. It is vital to conduct a comprehensive study with numerical modelling to simulate the actual field conditions of transport infrastructure to find reliable and cost-effective solutions to mitigate subgrade fluidisation. This goal can be achieved only by choosing a soil constitutive model that can capture the changes to the soil stiffness and strength due to excess pore pressure generation and dissipation, along with accumulated deformations in clay soil subjected to cyclic loading. Therefore, in this study, the SANICLAY constitutive model is selected as the suitable candidate to fulfil those requirements. It is implemented in the ABAQUS/Standard finite element program using the user-developed material subroutine UMAT. In the second part of the paper, the validation of the SANICLAY model that accounts for the anisotropy and structure of natural clay was presented using triaxial test data found in the literature for undisturbed clay. Application of the model to simulate cyclic loading shows that the version of SANICLAY used in the simulations needs modifications to capture the stiffness and strength degradation during cyclic loading.
