The adoption of caisson foundations for offshore jack-up rigs is attributed to their capability to prevent punch-through failure and enhance stability during drilling operations. The presence of the caisson wall alters the penetration mechanism, which differs from that of saucer-shaped spudcans, thus affecting the method for calculating the limiting cavity depth and bearing capacity. In this study, the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) finite element method was employed to conduct large deformation simulations of the entire preload penetration process. The influence of caisson wall length on the penetration mechanism and the limiting cavity depth of caissons was investigated. The analysis of penetration resistance and soil deformation mechanisms surrounding the advancing caisson has revealed a three-stage caisson penetration process: the caisson wall penetration stage, shallow penetration stage, and deep penetration stage. In the wall penetration stage, the penetration resistance originates from internal and external friction resulting from the interaction between the wall and soil. During the shallow penetration stage, soil gradually flows back into the cavity until reaching a stable cavity depth. In the deep penetration stage, a fully localized flow occurs around the embedded caisson, while the cavity remains unchanged. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the cavity depth between caisson and spudcan foundations. Considering the normalized strength formula and the length of the caisson wall, an equation is presented to estimate the limiting cavity depth for caisson foundations in homogeneous clay.

In Architectural engineering, thin shells represent two-dimensional structures in which the third dimension, the thickness, is significantly smaller than the others, which are thus prevailing. The thin-shell construction technique has its roots in Spanish bovedas tabicadas (dating back to at least the 12th century), the construction of which has continued to the present day. The Spanish technique, in the different countries of the Mediterranean area where it was exported (Portugal, France, Italy) has remained almost unchanged over time. However, the introduction of new building materials such as cement and steel at the end of the 19th century inevitably led to the experimentation of thin-shell structures characterised by greater slenderness and more complex shapes. Starting with Rafael Guastavino Moreno -who began to make improvements to the traditional technique-, and moving on to Eladio Dieste -who succeeded in fusing the qualities of bricks with those of reinforced concrete-, and Heinz Isler and Felix Candela -who, working in two different contexts, managed to improve the use of reinforced concrete-, we arrive to current constructions and experiments, in which the economy and ecological compatibility of the process are essential factors to be taken into account in the construction of thin shells. After a general overview on thin shells, the aim of the paper is to provide an analysis of some of the ribbing and formwork technologies used over time to build them. Similarities and differences among the various types of shells will be highlighted, having been used shape, size, and materials as variables for the analyses. A brief description of the current experiments carried out to determine alternative formwork systems to those usually used also is described at the end of the paper.

Today's building industry faces serious challenges as a result of the ineffectiveness of soils. Enhancing the properties for unsatisfactory soil using different waste and fibre might occasionally be a fundamental advancement for any construction works. Certain wastes and fibres generated by different means has prolonged affected the environment without having a definite means of treatment. The proper disposal of these wastes, like ash (fly ash, wood ash, baggage ash, and others), plastic bottles, construction demolished wastes, etc. has emerged as a potential danger to the ecosystem and requires effective solutions. Different fibres (natural and artificial fibres) like jute, coconut coir, bamboo, plastic and so on could be generated from wastes produced by various means can be used effectively for many constructional purposes. The study provides information on various studies that examine the use of recycle waste and fibre to stabilise weak soil and produce an acceptable subgrade material. The study provides a temporary alternative for any engineers when the availability of common additives like lime and cement is difficult. To comprehend the engineering performance and underlying mechanisms of altered soil, it is crucial to examine and assess fundamental strength characteristics. These include parameters like the California bearing ratio, unconfined compressive strength, and microstructure. The result obtained from different tests with addition of different % of additive on the soil is discussed, and the improvement found is shown in a detailed manner.

Windows and shading systems have a significant impact on the thermal and light environment in an office space. However, the design of such systems faces conflicting requirements, needing to ensure sufficient daylight without allowing too much daylight to enter the room. In addition, by maximizing the thermal and visual comfort of the users in the natural state of the building, the need for additional energy input can be reduced. This study proposes a multi-objective optimization framework, using Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI) and Thermal Comfort Percent (TCP) as optimization objectives, to retrofit the window and shading system of office buildings for energy saving. A case study of a typical open office space in China's hot summer and cold winter (HSCW) climate zone is conducted, employing a genetic algorithm to optimize the model and obtain multiple Pareto front solutions. These solutions are analyzed using the K-means clustering algorithm, and the optimal solution is selected through the energy consumption comparison. The results indicate that improving comfort levels in the natural building state can lead to a reduction in energy consumption. Additionally, the best-performing optimized solution shows a 5.35% decrease in energy consumption compared to the original configuration.

To reduce carbon emissions in buildings, the share of renewable energy for heating must increase significantly. For an apartment building it can be challenging to integrate these renewable energy technologies, due to lack of space in a single apartment unit. Therefore, switching to a collective heating system facilitates the incorporation of renewable sources, but inevitably, increases the distribution losses, reducing the energy efficiency of the system. This case study analysis discusses the theoretical and actual performance of three multi-family buildings with collective hydronic heating systems with a single circulation pipe for both space heating and domestic hot water, connected to an array of solar thermal collectors. Calorimeters at various points in the system allow a detailed mapping of the heat flows in the buildings. The analysis of this monitoring data show that considerable heat losses occur throughout the storage and distribution system, resulting in a low system efficiency. Particularly in summer months, only a fifth of the generated heat is used beneficially, since there is no space heating demand but the circulation pipe continues to pump water at a high temperature to cover the limited demand for domestic hot water. These total heat losses are significantly higher than what was theoretically determined. Moreover, the contribution of the solar collectors is limited and the absorbed solar heat injected in the system does not outweigh the distribution losses. Consequently, the choice for a collective installation must be weighed with care so that it can contribute to an improved energy performance.

The ground improvement of the approach embankments for abutments of a major bridge was designed as part of a highway upgrade project in northern New South Wales, Australia. The adopted soft ground treatment approach was to preload and surcharge the ground using prefabricated vertical drains to accelerate the consolidation process. Hold point for surcharge removal at the southern abutment was released after the review and back-analysis of available monitoring data (mainly settlement plates, piezometers, extensometers and hydrostatic profile gauges). The surcharge was removed in March 2018 and the bridge approach was constructed in June 2019. In mid-October 2019, settlement of the approach slab was noted with some major cracking of the F-type barrier. CPTu testing and reassessment of the performance of the main embankment and approach embankment were carried out. The back-analysis results were used to predict the future performance of the approach embankment and its impact on the piled foundation. A few lessons learned with regard to the design approach, back-analysis and construction staging are presented.

This paper investigates the transformative potential of sustainable Business Models in the European energy efficiency market, specifically focusing on SMEs. Socially, the model fosters trust and collaboration among stakeholders, enhancing the commitment to energy-saving practices and generating significant social benefits. The study examined the technological processes involved in extracting solid minerals from open deposits, analyzing the existing methods employed across various countries. In open-pit mining of solid mineral deposits using standard mining and hauling equipment, the cost of extracting one ton of rock mass is exceptionally high and escalates significantly as the depth of the quarry increases. Under similar conditions, this cost can surpass that of extracting the same amount of rock mass via underground methods. This increase is primarily due to the necessity to construct haul roads by removing sections of the rock mass above the top layer. The complexity and sometimes the impossibility of using conventional transportation methods in adverse climatic conditions also contribute to this issue. Additionally, environmental degradation in quarries worsens due to dust and emissions of pollutant gases. The article proposes innovative technology for transporting rock masses in the mining of solid mineral deposits, aimed at ensuring environmentally safe and highly profitable operations in quarries unrestricted by depth and annual output. It justifies the innovative designs of a skip hoist powered by a gravity drive (counterweight), which moves the skip body (Kaiym et al (2023) Justification of the innovate design of the skip winch with a body moved by a counterweight gravity drive. Building systems have traditionally been separated from architectural design, existing as add-ons to a building. The conceptual folly Pipecycle integrates radiant-based thermally active building systems into architectural space-making with a closed-loop hydronic pipe system that embodies various levels of surface emissivity, which strategically absorbs, rejects, or emits heat, thereby creating distinct thermal spaces. This paper presents outdoor testing of a proof-of-concept prototype and analytical model to demonstrate surface emissivity control with significant heat recovery from black-coated pipes and cooling potential from PVDF-coated pipes. A discussion explores practical challenges and opportunities for scaling up the technology in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries through a theoretical design that illustrates the potential for large-scale energy exchange using radiant systems.

Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) are a ground improvement method based on column inclusions that have become popular in geotechnical practice due to their simplicity and efficiency in construction. They are installed in soil with a displacement auger that laterally displaces the surrounding soil. During the installation, CMC are associated with large soil deformations and highly nonlinear material behaviour. Hence, conventional small-strain finite element models are not effective in simulating the installation stages because the elements in the finite element model at the vicinity of the auger are grossly distorted. However, as a first step towards incorporating the installation effects of CMC in the column design, the adaptive remeshing finite element analysis procedure is performed in this study, which is available in ABAQUS/Standard and capable of performing a deep penetration problem while avoiding mesh distortion. The soil type considered in this study is sand and hence the constitutive behaviour is simulated using the Mohr-Coulomb Model. The load-carrying capacity of a controlled modulus column and the influence zone around a column during installation were determined considering the stress distribution and soil deformation around a column during installation.
