This paper focuses on the structural damage assessment of the Doria Malaspina Castle, a historic masonry building located in Calice al Cornoviglio, Italy. The castle exhibits various cracking patterns, prompting an investigation to determine their causes. To address this, advanced numerical simulations were integrated with historical research, damage surveys, and 3D laser scanning. Historical records were initially combined with recent crack surveys to identify potential damage sources. A detailed geometric model of the entire castle was then developed based on a 3D laser scanner survey. This model served as the basis for creating a three-dimensional finite element model, which allowed for the simulation of different actions identified as possible causes of damage. The numerical model successfully replicated both past and current crack patterns, offering valuable insights into the factors responsible for the observed damage.

This paper discusses a framework for modelling and analysing corroded Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology, including the development of a software tool called Bridge Damage Information Modeller (BriDIM) to integrate BIM and Finite Element (FE) environments. BriDIM implicitly creates the as-damaged model combining geometric and semantic data of the structure and its associated damages. An automated two-way link for data exchange between BIM-FE environments is created. Numerical analysis is performed, and the resulting residual structural capacity is evaluated against the limit states. BriDIM modeller automatically transfers the analysis results back to BIM and creates the as-assessed model. The results reveal that this approach is a step towards using the BIM model as a bridge database. The proposed framework reforms how we do the model for structural assessment, and it will be helpful to decision-makers by using one 3D visualised BIM model that contains all geometrical, mechanical, damage, and retrofitting information in one model. The BriDIM can be a useful tool in developing Digital Twins of existing damaged structures. The model can create scenarios of various damage combinations and provide a strong tool to simulate the current condition of the bridge and the expected conditions the bridge might face in case of damage propagation.

Today, noise pollution is a major issue related in the industrial sector. Noise is the unwanted sound of a major pollutant (IS 10534: Method of Measurement of Airborne Noise Emitted by Gas Turbine Installations). Every industrial worker dreams of a comfortable workplace free from unwanted noise. Noise pollution scauses ill effects like hearing loss, tiredness, weakness, and higher blood pressure on the health of industrial workers. In the textile industry, there are different kinds of machinery that create unwanted noise. Therefore, to improve the workplace environment and reduce unwanted noise in industries, finding effective and harmless noise control methods is very important. In this paper, we have discussed the reduction of the noise level in the textile industry using agro-waste materials. Different agro-waste materials and their properties were studied. Agro-waste materials chosen for noise reduction are groundnut shells, sugarcane bagasse, coconut coir, maize waste, newspaper, wheat flour, natural latex, etc. Different proportions of the specimen were chosen of selected agro-waste from which four were found ideal for noise reduction. The suitability of the specimen is tested by impedance tube test using a sound level meter and calculated noise reduction coefficient (NRC). The effective use of agricultural waste material to overcome this problem is discussed in this paper.

This study proposes an innovative approach employing physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to reconstruct airflow patterns around buildings while concurrently assessing wind pressure exerted on their surfaces, leveraging sparsely recorded airflow velocity data in wind tunnel experiments. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a numerical experiment was conducted focusing on the flow inside and outside of a two-dimensional urban street canyon with an aspect ratio of one. High-resolution data about airflow and pressure distributions obtained from large-eddy simulation (LES) served as the foundation for generating simulated average flow velocity measurements at select sensor locations. We devised a PINN model to infer average flow velocity and associated parameters at any designated point within the target domain. Findings showed that feasible reconstruction of the average velocity distribution at an elevated resolution was achieved by spacing sensor measurements at a resolution of approximately H/6 (H: the canyon height), yielding a root-mean-square error of 0.023U(ref) (U-ref : the mean flow velocity along the principal flow direction at a height of 2H). Furthermore, successful estimation of average pressure exerted on building surfaces was achieved, demonstrating a correlation coefficient of 0.73 compared to LES-derived data. The proposed method exhibited promising potential in facilitating the efficient assessment of average flow distributions and building surface pressure within wind tunnel experimentation settings.

Bringelly Shale, consisting of claystone and siltstone with occasional sandstone, is a major formation of Wianamatta group in the Sydney Basin. Due to the weak cementation and presence of swelling clay minerals, the design and construction of retaining wall structures in Bringelly Shale with swelling potential in Western Sydney present unique challenges that demand careful consideration. This paper presents a case study of an approximately 20 m-deep excavation into Bringelly Shale at the St Marys metro station site on the Sydney Metro-Western Sydney Airport, Station Boxes and Tunnelling project. The design approach to the retaining walls comprising of soldier piled wall and ground anchors is described in detail. An instrumentation and monitoring plan developed and implemented during the construction is presented and discussed. The performance of the retaining wall was monitored with inclinometers and optical survey prisms at each stage of excavation and support installation. The paper also includes a discussion on the retaining wall performance during the construction. The findings of this paper serve as a valuable resource for geotechnical engineers, designers and practitioners, who will be involved in future projects dealing with Bringelly Shale and its swelling potential.

With the over-exploitation of mineral resources on land, mineral resources are scarce, so people have set their sights on the deep sea, which is rich in mineral resources. This paper establishes a two-dimensional model for the transportation process of granular ore in the pipeline during the lifting process of deep-sea mining pipelines. Using the method of electrical resistance tomography, the empirical formula of the solid phase content of granular ore in solid-liquid two-phase flow is obtained by analyzing the characteristic voltage. Different models are constructed under this working condition, and their results are compared with those obtained by the empirical formula, which proves the feasibility of this method and provides a technical reference for pipeline lifting in deep-sea mining.

The burgeoning accumulation of glass waste in Malaysia, particularly from the food and beverage industry, has become a prominent environmental concern, with disposal sites reaching saturation. This study introduces an innovative approach to addressing the twin challenges of landfill scarcity and natural resource conservation by repurposing discarded glass bottle waste into a viable construction material. The research presents a comprehensive evaluation of the strength characteristics of cement mortar when dark glass waste powder is used as a partial sand replacement. The experimental investigation probes the density, flow spread diameter, and key strength parameters-including compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths-of the modified cement mortar. Remarkably, results indicate that a full replacement of sand with glass waste powder significantly improves the material's strength attributes. A specific mixture with a cement/sand/water ratio of 1:5:1.24 was found to be optimal, yielding an impressive compressive strength of 7 MPa at the 28-day mark, accompanied by a favourable 200 mm spread diameter in flow table tests. The findings of this study underscore the dual benefits of utilizing glass waste powder in cement mortar: mitigating Malaysia's glass waste dilemma and enhancing the performance of construction materials such as bricks and concrete products. Consequently, the research validates the premise that increasing the incorporation of glass waste as a sand substitute promotes not only environmental sustainability but also material innovation in the construction industry.

Transport is responsible for about 23% of global energy-related CO2 emissions (also referred to as carbon or GHGs), in addition to those associated with building and maintaining the infrastructure. Thus, the transport sector must rapidly accelerate its decarbonisation efforts to help countries limit their emissions to meet Nationally Determined Contributions established in response to the Paris Agreement. This is especially important given IPCC estimates that the 1.5 degrees C line of global warming will be crossed in the early 2030s. Transportation sector CO2 emissions are attributable to the infrastructure (mainly in construction, maintenance, and repair) and vehicles using it. Both areas will require urgent attention. The carbon emissions associated with the construction and maintenance of railway infrastructure are currently not well understood, hence meaningful whole life-cycle analysis of railway geotechnical assets is problematic. Filling this knowledge gap requires measurement of the CO2 and carbon footprint associated with railway assets and identification of hot spots. This paper outlines tangible steps that can be taken, aligned to PAS 2080 life-cycle stages, for several types of mainline railway earthworks over differing temporal scales of earthwork interventions to decarbonise these interventions and help reach net zero. Research, based on a dataset of 50 small-scale mainline railway earthwork case studies in Great Britain, has found that for differing temporal interventions the carbon hotspots were in differing PAS 2080 life-cycle stages thereby requiring a range of different solutions to deliver decarbonisation.

Work zones are generally established for roadway rehabilitation and expansion projects. Proper planning and design of work zones is crucial to realizing (1) project time and budget objectives and the (2) safety of the construction crews and the public. Performing construction work in the crowded and complicated urban streets is extremely challenging. In work zone planning and design, Traffic Accommodation Strategy, Transportation Management Plan, and Traffic Control Plan need to be considered, and work zone implementation involves four fundamental elements, including advance warning, transition, activity area, and termination. Previous studies focused on the work zones have been conducted from the perspective of transportation engineering. This paper introduces the definition, classification, characteristics, and hazards of urban street work zones, with special emphasis on the cost implications in connection with work zone planning, implementation, and safety. The research also examines various technology measures to ensure work zone safety, such as traffic control devices, speed reduction systems, and intrusion sensing technologies.

The concept of a circular economy aims to keep resources in circulation by reusing. To address this challenge in the construction sector, a sustainable approach involves using resource-efficient concrete (R-concrete), in which natural aggregate is partially or fully replaced with recycled aggregate (RA) from construction demolition waste. Many studies have reported that a high proportion of RA negatively impacts the mechanical properties of concrete. For structural design, determining anchorage lengths requires an understanding of bond behavior. This aspect of mechanical behavior still lacks systematic investigation regarding the properties of concrete with high amounts of recycled aggregates (RAC). To bridge this research gap, pull-out tests were conducted on 60 specimens in 12 test series. Compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and Youngs modulus were investigated. Different aggregate composition, percentage of recycled aggregate (0%, 60%, and 100%) and maximum aggregate size (8 mm and 16 mm) were used. Bond stresses at design level were determined and compared with Eurocode 2 design rules. Comparing RAC to normal concrete (NC) a decrease in modulus of elasticity and maximum bond stress is observed. The use of RAresulted in reduced bond stiffness compared to normal concrete, which led to longer anchorage lengths with increasing recycled aggregate content compared to NC. A comparison of calculated bond stresses at design level indicate that Eurocode 2 design rules can be employed for R-concretes with varying proportions of recycled aggregate.
