Architectural principles and the aesthetic appearance of historic buildings are relatively coherent in certain time periods according to the dominant architectural style, construction techniques according to the location of the building, and knowledge of the craftsman. More than this, when discussing vernacular architecture, the materials used are usually obtained from nearby locations, leading to the adaptation of the considered structural system while maintaining the appearance of the building. Considering this, a study was conducted on a series of historic churches from Gorj County, built at the end of the Gorj and beginning of the 20th century, which present two different approaches. The study was performed on churches that suffered slight damages after the series of seismic events in the region in 2023. The analysis showed they all have a similar shape and were built using stacked river stone foundations and brick masonry walls with lime-based mortar. Above the main nave, most of the churches presented a brick masonry vault, but in some peculiar cases, the brick vault was replaced with a timber one decorated similarly to the brick one. Above the vault, the roof structure is made of timber in both cases. After the seismic events, the experts involved in the diagnosis process performed extensive numerical analysis of their behaviour, obtaining information about their structural behaviour. Based on the results, four churches were chosen in the region, and their structural behaviour was analysed, highlighting the influence of the used timber vault on seismic behaviour compared with the behaviour of typical brick vault historic churches of the same region.

Moisture damages lead to significant costs and impact indoor environments negatively. Identifying their occurrence patterns is crucial for the implementation of preventive or mitigative measures, though it remains highly challenging due to the complex interplay of multidimensional variables. This study aims to identify primary moisture damage profiles in Swedish buildings and evaluate their prevalence. Using data-driven analytical and visualization techniques, 2,100 complex moisture-related damage records between 2014 and 2020 with information on building parameters and damage specifics from Sweden were examined in multivariate analysis. The association analysis reveals varied relationships among factors related to damage, with damage types distributed proportionally across damaged components, causing components, sources, building phase, and responsible actors. The presence patterns of damage differ significantly by building types, yet they are generally reported more frequently in buildings built during the 1960-1980 and 2000-2020. Prevalent moisture damages in Swedish buildings include microbial growth and deformation at the building envelopes and roof, odor in indoor environments caused by wind-driven rain, and indoor or outdoor humidity. Additionally, these damages appear more often in buildings constructed with non-ventilated crawlspaces, wood, concrete, brick structures, facade, exterior walls, and non-ventilated cold attics. The characterized moisture damage patterns and estimated frequency enhance the understanding of their occurrence and associating factors.

Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) affects occupants' health, wellbeing and comfort, making its assessment increasingly required. This work presents a system designed to collect subjective and objective data on IEQ, referred to as PROMET&O (PROactive Monitoring for indoor EnvironmenTal quality & cOmfort). It is built on a survey and a low-cost and accurate multi-sensor device. The former was developed to collect feedback on occupants' comfort perception and personal and behavioural information. The latter was developed to monitor the thermal, lighting, acoustic and air quality conditions in indoor environments. The monitored parameters (air temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, illuminance and sound pressure level) were selected based on international standards. A three-step calibration of the device is applied to ensure the measurements' reliability. The monitored data is transferred and processed on an open-source platform and the thermal comfort, visual comfort, acoustic comfort, indoor air quality and IEQ indexes are calculated and displayed on a user-friendly interface. This interface was designed to inform both building managers and occupants on IEQ trends and to provide them with more information on monitored parameters and hints on actions to improve their comfort. Preliminary tests in laboratory and in-field have shown the validity and scalability of the system's design.

Nowadays the evaluation of physical vulnerability of the built-up interacting with landslides is a topic of great interest, due to the increasing number of disasters. At the state of art different approaches are spread for assessing physical vulnerability. Prominent among these are methods based on the damage data collected in the post-event stage, since they provide a clear understanding of the damage mechanisms, as well as of the building behaviour interacting with the landslide. In this study a statistical methodology was developed for estimating the physical vulnerability of buildings exposed to slow-moving landslides. The method was applied on a dataset of 170 buildings. Data collection was based on post-landslide events field surveys carried out in five municipalities of the Campania region, in Southern Italy. After the detection of the most influential vulnerability parameters, a multinomial logistic regression analysis was applied on the database for establishing a damage predictive model. In the end the model has been validated on the dataset in order to evaluate the response.

Kathmandu is facing escalating challenges related to congestion, air pollution and energy consumption due to increase in demand for personalized transportation. Efforts are being made to strengthen the public transport system in Kathmandu and much imitative is introduction of electric vehicles. Development of these buses is expected to augment public transport capacity, create clean environment, and modernize the transportation system. In this context, a study has been undertaken to determine which aspects of service quality are important and to what extent the rider's overall satisfaction with the electric bus can be achieved with these aspects of service quality. Partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) integrated with the necessary condition analysis is used to analyze the service quality and overall satisfaction of riders. 388 data were collected using the customer satisfaction questionnaire, which captured satisfaction ratings of service quality attributes, sociodemographic characteristics, and trip characteristics. After the analysis, among the latent construct of service quality it was observed that riders 'overall satisfaction with electric buses is highly influenced by latent constructs comfort followed by security, availability, and time & reliability. Between latent construct of personal attitude, riders' overall satisfaction is mostly affected by involvement than that of perceived value. Improving these latent constructs can boost the rider's overall satisfaction. This study will assist electric bus operators and researchers in identifying key attributes for improving service quality and attracting more riders to public buses. Additionally, it will provide public authorities, policymakers, and researchers with essential insights into making electric buses, a sustainable and low-emission public transport option, more appealing.

Compared to inland settlements, coastal cities concentrate a large proportion of the global population and economic activity, while being exposed and vulnerable to a range of climate- and ocean-compounded hazards driven by climate change. Given the urgency of identifying efficient and sustainable climate adaptation strategies and designing climate-proof models of urban development, the research focuses on floating urban clusters as plug-in extensions of coastal cities. In particular, the study focuses on the identification of the requirements that make up the performancebased design framework (PBDF) for floating architecture. The PBDF is conceived as a meta-design tool for architects, urban planners, and policymakers, for advancing multiple criteria decision-making for floating architecture. Floating urban development is likely to take place in the context of coastal areas. The hypothesis is that the needs and design criteria are more similar to those related to the built environment than to those related to the offshore or naval industry. Therefore, the identification and categorization of performance requirements takes the urban-architectural prescriptive and performance-based norms as the starting point, while addressing the missing aspects from the perspective of offshore and shipping regulatory frameworks. First of all, an evidence-based assessment of performance guidelines and regulatory systems that are effective in different countries around the world is carried out. The PBDF is further integrated, weighted, and validated through a case study analysis to merge as much as possible theory and practice. Ultimately, the paper outlines the trade-offs and correlations between different performance requirements, as the PBDF is meant to emphasize the logical interaction between the different potential choices for the identification of different scenarios. Salt has a significant effect on the moisture absorption isotherm and diffusivity of porous building materials, thus affects the heat and moisture transfer. However, the influence of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) on these properties of sintered brick has rarely been studied. In this study, the isothermal moisture absorption and moisture diffusivity (D-l) of Chinese sintered blue bricks with different Na2SO4 content was tested. The D-l was determined by a simple method (called 'ruler method') based on capillary absorption experiment. Then using the measured D-l, the capillary absorption process of sintered bricks with different salt content was reproduced based on the coupled heat and moisture transfer model. The results show that the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of sintered blue bricks dramatically increased at the relative humidity (phi) higher than 80% due to the presence of Na2SO4, especially in extremely high relative humidity (more than 94%). The EMC values of bricks with 1.74% Na2SO4 contentwas 12.0 times higher than that of salt free bricks under 99% relative humidity. As the Na2SO4 content increased, the capillary absorption coefficient of sintered bricks decreased with maximum decline of 28.7% while the capillary moisture content was basically unchanged. The Dl obtained from the ruler method increased in low moisture content range and decreased in high moisture range with the increase of salt content, and can simulate the capillary absorption rate reasonably well. This study provides basic data for coupled heat, moisture and salt simulation, energy calculation and heritage conservation of extensive architectural heritage envelopes.

The Waikato Expressway is one of the New Zealand Transport Agency's (NZTA), nowWaka Kotahi, seven Roads of National Significance. Tetra Tech Coffey is part of the City Edge Alliance (CEA) engaged by Waka Kotahi to design and construct the Hamilton Section of the Waikato Expressway project. As part of the project, the CEA was required to design and construct an 8 m high embankment founded on soil consisting of highly compressible soft Peat, Clay, and liquefiable embedded Sand layers. Preloading the subsoil with a high surcharge was recommended to minimise the post-construction settlement at the expressway embankment and underpass concrete box structure at Powells Road. Contiguous flight Auger (CFA) lattice was utilised post-surcharge to improve the ground further at the underpass location. The CFA ground improvement was not utilised in the earthwork's embankment portion on either side of the underpass to minimise the construction costs. Planning and designing a new 8 m high soil embankment close to a CFA soil improvement zone increased the need for accuracy in differential settlement and complexity of the work. Limited laboratory testing and underestimated compressible soil parameters caused delay in the settlement rate in the initial stage and additional surcharge was placed to speed up the consolidation period. Several settlement monitoring instruments were installed and several settlements back analysis methods using finite element modelling and empirical methods were used to observe the settlement rate and estimate the additional surcharge requirement. This paper presents the design and monitoring of an expressway embankment for static and dynamic loads, action taken to stabilise the surcharge slope failure and other difficulties faced during construction.

Many low-rise residential masonry buildings were designed and constructed without seismic design criteria. Such buildings are generally safe under gravity loading unless uneven soil settlements take place under the building. Predicting the behavior of masonry structures under earthquake forces has always been complex due to their heterogeneity and brittleness. In recent years, seismic evaluation of masonry structures in the Groningen region has gained importance due to natural gas extraction that resulted in subsidence above the field. Using nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) curves, it can be probabilistically understood whether the structure would meet the performance targets at various intensity levels. This paper focuses on a 19th century, 2-story unreinforced brick masonry (UBM) building in Groningen which reflects the general typology of the region. LS-DYNA has been used as an useful computational tool in the 3D structural modeling and analyses. IDA and fragility curves are evaluated according to the Dutch earthquake code (NPR 9998R + C1), TYDRYK (The Earthquake Risk Management Guide for Historic Buildings in Turkey) 2017, and Eurocode 8. Considering the five earthquake records (Huizinge) in each direction, it is seen that the collapse prevention criterion proposed by the regulations (0.8-1.0% drift) is exceeded. The developed fragility curves suggest that the probabilities for each code-based performance level vary significantly. For example, as per EC8, the level of collapse prevention is reached when the spectral acceleration coefficient is 3 for a probability of exceedance of 48%. For the same coefficient, a probability of exceedance of 28% is obtained when TYDRYK 2017 is used.
