To estimate the energy performance of dwelling envelopes using non-intrusive monitoring methods, disaggregating energy demand profiles is required. In dwellings with instantaneous gas heaters and gas stoves, the demand profiles for space heating, domestic hot water, and cooking should be disaggregated from the total gas demand. While some disaggregation methods exist, it is unclear how accurate they are. This paper contributes to this gap by collecting data on space heating, domestic hot water, and cooking demand profiles from eight Belgian dwellings through a survey and measurements of the total gas demand, water temperatures at the heater, and - for three of them - hot water flows. The total gas demand was disaggregated based on these data and the space heating demand profiles compared with those disaggregated by five models: 1) a survey-based model;2) the energy signature curve combined with singular spectrum analysis;3) pattern recognition;4) a peak filling model;and 5) a grey-box model with a switching model. The models' disaggregation accuracy was determined for datasets that differ in measurement duration, sampling interval, and measurement season. Generally, the models underestimate the contribution of heating to the total gas demand. For hourly sampling intervals, the survey-based model performs best. For 15 min intervals and winter data, the grey-box with switching model performs better and for these intervals but autumn data, the energy signature curve. For 5 min sampling intervals, pattern recognition performs best.

From 1995 to 2023 moisture content has been measured on a south-faced 0,75 m thick outer wall of brickwork. The wall is whitewashed on the outside. On the inside, a whitewashed and a plastic painted area lay beside each other. Moisture measurements made with a capacitive instrument showed, as expected, that the whitewashed part dries out to equilibrium, whereas the plastic painted part is kept wet with a higher moisture content.

The construction industry is a significant sector of the economy in the Quebec province of Canada. Despite its importance, the Quebec construction industry is a complex ecosystem in which integrative and collaborative strategies, such as integrated design (ID) and integrated project delivery (IPD), do not emerge naturally. To better understand the factors that influence the adoption of innovative strategies in construction ecosystems, we explore the barriers that hinder the implementation of ID in the construction sector. Based on these results, we identify five categories of barriers: cultural, financial, legal, cognitive, and technological. The empirical study reveals that the synergy between IPD and ID can enhance their mutual implementations in construction projects. IPD enablers of organizational, cognitive, and technological integrations can address the identified challenges to the implementation of ID processes during projects' life-cycle. Based on these results, we develop an IPD-ID framework and propose some recommendations for the effective implementation of IDP.

This paper describes ongoing research toward the development of a moisture risk index that is intended to give a quantitative indication of the risk of moisture performance issues for different wood-framewall assemblies in different climates. The concept is like a Home Energy Rating System Index but for moisture performance of a wall assembly rather than whole house energy performance. The moisture risk index is envisioned as providing more granularity than existing pass/fail criteria or green/yellow/red risk assessments while requiring less computational effort than full probabilistic analysis. Hygrothermal simulations and post-processor models for damage functions provide the core quantitative outputs that are used to construct the moisture risk index. Simulations are informed by field and laboratory data and include vapor diffusion, air leakage, and wind-driven rain loads. Damage functions include mold growth, fungal decay of wood, and corrosion of metal fasteners. The moisture risk index is based on scaling up the numerical outputs for the different damage functions, with an intended range from zero for the best performing (lowest risk) case to 100 for the worst performing (highest risk) case. The index will thus provide information about moisture risk that is easily understood by the building design and construction community, with the ability to illustrate how changing certain design features can mitigate risks.

Soft clays are prevalent in coastal areas of Australia, exhibiting low bearing capacity and considerable settlement upon loading, and must be improved as subgrades to meet the increasing demand for railway transportation soft soils beneath railway embankments are often subjected to train-induced cyclic loads generating higher excess pore water pressure (EPWP), reduced bearing capacity, and deformations under poor drainage conditions. These often lead to reduced efficiency in transportation and maintenance costs. Thus, it is important to investigate the behaviour of soft soils subjected to heavy cyclic loading and preventative actions. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the role of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs) in mitigating failures associated with railway subgrades under cyclic loading.

Condition assessment of the cultural heritage can play a relevant role in the integrated structural safety and conservation of assets and sites, particularly when heritage is located in areas exposed at different hazards. The majority of the inner/peripheral areas of Italy are located along the Apennine ridge and shine for the quality and quantity of cultural heritages, such as minor archaeological sites located in very complex natural environments. Moreover, these sites are often subjected to lower maintenance and attention with respect to the largest ones, also because out of the economic and touristic mainstream. In this context, rational and effective paradigms are needed to ensure the preservation of minor archaeological heritage from anthropic and natural hazards. This paper explores the potentialities offered by the Virtual Tour as heterogeneous data collection and sharing tool for periodic condition assessment aimed at covering conservation and maintenance as well as safety of the users. An operational framework aimed at pursuing an integrated management of the assets is presented and applied to the archaeological complex of Pietrabbondante of Samnite age, located in Molise Region (Italy). Time dependent condition assessment has been implemented by processing and comparing the old images collected by the authors from different sources, including those available on the internet with those acquired on-site by a digital 360 degrees camera at the present time. Old images have been thus included in an immersive Virtual Tour showing as the comparisons between the old and new images represent a valid approach for the periodic condition assessment and monitoring of the artifacts. Moreover, all the collected information included in the Virtual Tour have been made queryable and refreshable to be used by the Authorities for an informed maintenance of the sites.

This research addresses the parametric and semantic heritage modelling of the Church of the Company of Jesus in Quito, Ecuador, within the Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) context to manage information and support its preventive conservation and maintenance. The construction, architectural and artistic particularities of this emblematic example of the Latin American Baroque of the Jesuit order, built from 1605 to 1765, require an exhaustive 3D digital replica. An accurate model enables programmed actions in a comprehensive management project and further monitoring of the asset. Massive data acquisition technologies, e.g., Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry, greatly help capture the real state of historic constructions. These protocols provide accurate details that enrich the building's intrinsic database-structure, materiality, evolution and metamorphosis-and are constantly updated to support future interventions. A large library of heritage objects that supports the 3D model of the historic building is pursued. To face this challenge, progress must still be made to effectively implement unstructured data organisation processes and semantic classification by architectural and artistic typologies. This work addresses the analysis and implementation of semi-automatic modelling techniques for accurate heritage representation. Based on TLS data, this Scan-to-mesh-to-BIM workflow culminates in the creation of 3D parametric objects. The methodological process developed explores several complementary paths to automate modelling processes, whether parts or complete historical systems, to reinforce the HBIM project.

The facade of high-rise buildings accounts for a significant portion of the building's surface area. Utilizing an Adaptive Facade (AF), a building envelope system can reduce the total energy consumption by 20% to 50%. Thus, it is impossible to directly assess the effects of AF on energy performance. This paper focused on the impact of AFs on thermal loads and enhancing thermal comfort in a high-rise office building. In this study, a base building with a Window Wall Ratio (WWR) of 30% was employed as a reference building. A triangular pattern with six movement steps of A1 to A6 was then placed on the baseline of the basic model. The hourly solar radiation on four proposed days was used to conduct an energy simulation with the help of the Grasshopper and Ladybug plugins. The simulations were carried out in various directions and rotation angles to analyze the effect of applying AF and enhancing the WWR on thermal loads and energy use. The results proved the possibility of reducing thermal loads by up to 20%. In addition to reducing the thermal loads of the building, implementing AFs with higher WWR is also more beneficial to the users, greatly enhancing user satisfaction.

The paper goals to investigate hygrothermal behaviors of traditional timber framed infilled exterior walls in Turkiye by using numerical method. DELPHIN, which is a distinguished hygrothermal simulation tool, was applied. 150 cm x 150 cm wall samples were modelled as timber framed with three different infill materials: stone, adobe and brick. Weather data of three cities;Rize, Karabuk, and Eskisehir, where these examples are mostly housed, were used to analyzed hygrothermal behaviors of the wall samples over 2 years in order to simulate real conditions. Temperature and relative humidity values of indoor environment were set as three different conditions. The findings of simulation were obtained as daily data. The analysis of data is based on temperature, relative humidity, and U-value evaluation. The results signify that wall samples may have humidity-based problems depending on various climatic conditions, construction details, intersection of different materials. Additionally, U Value of the wall samples are not responded to the desired values. To conclude, intersection points of materials, layers, and their relations should be deeply examined to develop the hygrothermal performance of the selected walls in the progress of conservation/restoration/renovation projects.
