Exploitation of traditional construction materials like natural crushed stones in road construction poses threats to the environment and its sustainability. On the other hand, increase in construction activities due to rapid industrialization and urbanization has come up with the generation of a large amount of demolition waste which ends up creating problems for the environment. Hence, the use of construction and demolition waste (CDW) as a recycled concrete aggregate in place of crushed stones in pavement construction can be considered as one of the promising methods to manage the CDW, and, at the same time, to protect the natural environment. In this regard, studies on the crushing characteristics of CDW becomes very important. The basic objective of the present study is to improve the crushing characteristics of CDW by mixing it with some suitable admixture. With this in view, one-dimensional compression tests were conducted by applying different stress levels to CDW mixed with different percentages of silica fume (i.e., 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%) in the form of slurry to the CDW surface. The amount of crushing was calculated by using Hardin's breakage factor, and the results were found to be very useful. Based upon the present study, the optimum percentage of silica fume can be 15%.

New opportunities and challenges for the building sector takes advantages of new sustainable materials where waste is used in place of raw matter. Reducing heat exchange through buildings and improving acoustic performances of buildings allow to achieve a better indoor comfort. The paper presents the results of an experimental study in which different combinations of straw fibers have been investigated. Sound absorbing and insulating properties have been measured in order to characterize and compare the experimental materials. The study finally aims at responding to current challenges in the transition towards low environmental impact processes, showing a potential way to produce low carbon emission buildings.

The safety of marine structures and underwater vehicles is threatened by the internal solitary waves (ISWs). The experimental study of the load characteristics exerted by ISWs on an immersed square column has been carried out in a stratified fluid flume. A new type of submerged load measurement platform is proposed to measure the changes in load exerting on the square column, and an array of conductivity probes is used to obtain the characteristics of ISWs. The influence of wave-flow fields of ISWs and depth of square column on the load characteristics is comprehensively analyzed. The results show that the load on the square column is mainly determined by the ISW-induced flow field. The intensity and trend of the forces at different depths are different, and the intensity of forces increases with the increase of wave amplitude. Square column will experience roll and pitch when encountering ISWs during the diving process, with the pycnocline being the region with the strongest rolling and pitching.

Evaluation of stress distribution through soil strata is one of the fundamentals of geotechnical analysis. Vertical stress is attributed to the loading intensity and geostatic stress. Even though many analytical methods have been developed idealizing the soil as a homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic material, the soil consists of layers of different characteristics in reality. In this study, stress distribution under a strip footing through a two-layered system consisting of purely sandy and purely clayey soils where the sand at the top was analyzed with the finite element method using Plaxis 2D geotechnical software. The Mohr-Coulomb model was used to feed the characteristics of the soils to the computer software. Different test cases were simulated by changing the soil strength parameters;friction angle of sandy soils, undrained cohesion of clayey soils, and the thickness of two layers for selected soil types, while the total depth of the soil system was 8 m. The numerical results were compared with Boussinesq's solutions which are linear elastic solutions. It shows that stress at a selected point is small when the soils are loose and soft compared to the soils which are dense and stiff. The lower the thickness of the sand layer higher the stress at a selected point. Vertical stress values of Boussinesq's solutions agree with the finite element analysis values when moving away from the footing both in horizontal and vertical directions.

In recent years, the European Commission has introduced stringent restrictions regarding energy use to tackle climate change. Simultaneously, the IEA called for a reduction in gas imports from Russia, further influencing occupants' behaviour in indoor environments and targeting their actions at energy savings. A study conducted by the OECD has confirmed that the increase in energy prices resulting from the recent energy crisis has significantly influenced user behaviour. The natural gas consumption in the EU dropped 20.1% during the period August-November 2022, compared to the average demand for the same months between 2017 and 2021, while the energy prices dramatically increased. During the winter of 2022-2023, the Danish government adopted the EU's restrictions to lower the indoor temperature to 19 degrees C in public buildings. Thus, the proposed study has a dual objective. A theoretical framework about the correlation between contextual and personal factors related to the energy price, occupants' behaviour, and comfort is investigated. Based on a systematic literature review, we analysed 615 papers based on the title, abstract, and keyword screening. An AI-supervised tag extraction process revealed that the terms "price" and "income" were present respectively in 9% and 11% of the selected indoor environmental papers. It demonstrates an interest in the role that personal and contextual domains play in shaping the perception of indoor environments. Furthermore, a positive trend in the annual publication suggests an extension of the inclusion of economic factors as criteria for thermal comfort analysis since 2018. The relevance of that correlation was supported by a questionnaire about the impact of the Danish energy strategy on daily habits and the willingness to pay for an improved indoor environment. The impact of geotechnical risks on projects is often not well understood by non-geotechnical professionals. In many cases, the risks can be underestimated, and on rare occasions grossly overestimated. The impact of failing to appreciate geotechnical risks by non-geotechnical professionals is also highlighted through recent case histories where their poor perception of the risks taken has resulted in poor project outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to gain an understanding of how risks are perceived by these professionals to be able to target geotechnical risk communication more effectively. Research has been undertaken through interviewing a range of construction professionals to gauge the understanding of geotechnical risk by those who work in the geotechnical field and those in other disciplines. These include those from construction companies, government, and consultancies and cover a broad range of experiences. Views of geotechnical engineers and the profession were obtained as well as the participants' perception of the impacts of geotechnical risks on projects.

The structure of the pavement is formed upon the subgrade of soil, which can be either the natural surface or a surface that has been prepared. It offers the pavement layers the necessary support and evenly distributes the load that the traffic produces on the surface to the layers beneath it. To ensure the pavement structure will continue to function effectively over time, it is imperative that the subgrade soil possesses both strength and stability. In order to assess the qualities of the subgrade soil, a number of tests are carried out, and then, the right actions are taken in order to improve its strength and stability. These actions include enhancing the soil quality, ensuring adequate drainage, and making use of geosynthetic materials. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect that reinforcement material has on the level of strength possessed by the subgrade soil. The efficiency of geotextile as a reinforcing material was determined by carrying out California Bearing Ratio (CBR) experiments on soil samples with and without geotextile reinforcement, under both soaked and unsoaked conditions. These tests were carried out in order to compare the results of the two groups. The study utilized both woven and non-woven geotextile materials in order to evaluate the effects of varying the depth of the geotextile layers as well as the number of layers on the strength of the subgrade soil. In order to conduct the tests, several combinations were formed by inserting one, two, or three layers of woven and non-woven geotextile at varying depths into the soil samples. The placement of two layers of geotextile at depths of H/5 and H/2 from the top produced the best possible results. Here, H represents the overall height of the sample. In addition, it was discovered that the strength of the samples that were treated with woven geotextile increased much more than that of the samples that were treated with non-woven geotextile. In today's technology era, many alternatives are available for measuring soil and structural response, and direct measurement in-situ using instruments/ sensors is the best option among several alternatives. Proper selection of instrumentation for any field test is essential to obtain reliable data. The present paper discusses the instrumentation plan adopted for a field test that was conducted to assess the suitability of geofoam as a compressible inclusion material in retaining walls. The compressible inclusion is a material that is introduced between the wall and backfill which deforms in a controlled manner allowing the soil to change its stress state from at-rest to active or near-active state, causing lateral pressure reduction on the wall. The field testing aimed to measure the earth pressure on the wall, wall deflection, and compression of the geofoam. The options available for measuring each of these parameters, such as earth pressure cells and their type, inclinometer, displacement transducers, etc., are analyzed with the criterion for selecting the right instrument for measuring each parameter. Each instrument has its challenges and some of these challenges encountered during field testing are discussed in detail about earth pressure cells and inclinometers. To make sense of the data obtained by instruments, the user must have some secondary measurement tools to justify the data obtained by primary instruments.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are particularly complex engineering structures and according to Eurocode 7 and environmental hazards, belong to the third geotechnical category. Technical reclamation work usually focuses on ensuring the overall geotechnical safety of contaminating structures, by sealing the top of the landfill, using cohesive mineral soil, or using synthetic materials. Owing to legal requirements, specific locations, or challenging soil and water conditions, reclamation methods differ around the world. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of two reclamation systems for MSW landfills used in Poland and the Czech Republic to determine the impact of selected landfill reclamation methods and capping systems on the environment. The processes in landfills differentiate the object not only in terms of quantity but also in terms of chemical composition. Based on long-term monitoring, the samples were characterized to check their basic physicochemical parameters and variability over time. To verify the effectiveness of landfill capping systems, analysis of the level of heavy metal contamination of leachate and analysis of groundwater quality in the vicinity of the landfill were carried out. The results of this study showed that the appropriate selection of technical reclamation methods is crucial and has a significant impact on the processes of a closed landfill and on the environment itself.
