This paper describes the development process of a numerical model for a 15-storey building located in Mexico City and built in 1950. The building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the modeling was performed during a recent structural assessment of the building. The structural system has a regular geometry and is based on reinforced concrete frames and masonry walls. Nevertheless, the floor system of the structure is unusual, having a double slab that creates a box section of variable height. In addition, the structure has several eccentric elements. Due to these characteristics, conventional modeling idealizations are not straightforward. In this context, three modeling approaches are evaluated. Based on comparisons in terms of dynamic properties and gravitational internal forces, it is found that a simple but reasonable model is suitable to study the structure. Furthermore, the importance of validating the modeling tools provided by commercial software is highlighted, in order to avoid miscalculations.

The integration of 3D printing technology into earth construction presents an opportunity to reinvent earthen architecture and construction methods. This by revalorizing earth-based materials sourced from excavation works of major infrastructure projects. This article explores the durability aspects of 3D printed earth architecture, focusing on water resistance against drip impact and natural weathering. Additionally, it examines the efficacy of incorporating bacterial cellulose (BC) as an additive for enhanced water resistance. This suggests a correlation between printing parameters and water resistance. The study outlines material selection, prototyping techniques, and testing methodologies. Findings reveal that BC addition significantly improves erosion resistance, as demonstrated by drip test analyses. Moreover, observations from the weathering study highlight minimal degradation in BC-stabilized samples compared to unstabilized counterparts, which exhibited notable cracking. Finally, the impact of the implementation techniques has been explored, revealing a fragile behavior of printed samples compared to molded ones. This research contributes to a broader thesis centered "harnessing the advantages of cutting-edge construction technologies and eco-design methodologies to valorize excavated soil as construction wastes".

Cemented sands have great potential as construction materials compared with clean sand due to the higher strength, but they have insignificant environmental benefits such as high embodied energy and carbon footprint. To provide an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and reliable solution to create an engineered soil, this study explored how Tung oil, a Chinese traditional vegetable hardening oil, affects the mechanical behavior of silica sand. Sand with different grain size is mixed with various concentrations (1-5%) of Tung oil. Heating can accelerate hardening of Tung oil when mixed with sands and may contribute to the increase of shear strength and dilatancy compared with clean sand. Therefore, direct shear box tests are performed on samples equilibrated at 60 degrees C. The Tung oil-sand mixture was found to exhibit (1) increasing shear strength and dilatancy with increasing Tung oil concentration, but excessive Tung oil concentration will weaken the stabilization efficiency of coarse sand;(2) the larger shear strength and stress dilatancy for host sand with grain size ranges from 0.063 to 0.3 mm.

Flexible riser is a key equipment for ensuring the continuous transportation of deep-sea mineral resources. Composite materials are more suitable for flexible risers due to their advantages such as high strength and weight reduction, and their structural design parameters directly affect their load-bearing performance. This paper takes the structural stiffness of composite flexible risers as the research object, and explores the influence of structural design parameters on the structural stiffness. A structural stiffness prediction model for flexible risers is established based on multi-layer artificial neural networks. A SBP-BNSGA-II model is proposed to obtain the Pareto frontier solution set for optimization objectives. Provide important reference for the structural design of composite flexible risers.

This study aimed to evaluate the real environmental impact of using recycled materials in construction, particularly within the context of prefabricated walls in the French construction industry. Our objective was to assess the feasibility and implications of incorporating recycled concrete into prefabricated wall systems, considering both environmental benefits and potential drawbacks. To achieve this objective, we conducted a comprehensive LCA comparing two scenarios: one utilizing traditional concrete fill and the other integrating recycled concrete. This analysis was carried out in the Parisian region, where a recycling facility is situated, ensuring the consideration of local factors such as transportation distances and recycling infrastructure. Innovatively, we overcame the challenge of accessing comprehensive life cycle inventory data by integrating FDES into the OpenLCA software platform. This approach democratized access to high-quality environmental data for construction materials, mitigating the financial barrier associated with proprietary databases like Ecoinvent. Our analysis revealed a nuanced interplay of trade-offs associated with using recycled concrete. While recycled materials exhibited lower carbon emissions, they also demonstrated a higher degree of soil acidification compared to traditional concrete. This juxtaposition underscored the complexity of sustainability considerations and emphasized the importance of comprehensive evaluations in material selection. By analyzing the real environmental impact of using recycled materials and evaluating their feasibility in a practical context, our study, underscores the significance of considering local contexts and recycling infrastructure, ultimately aiming to minimize environmental footprints and optimize project outcomes in the French construction industry.

The contemporary rehabilitation of historical buildings, characterized by a high monumental value, with particular reference to those in the historical center of an urban area, represents a significant instrument for urban renewal, revitalization, and economic development of an entire city. Within the framework of such interventions, this paper examines an ongoing building restoration project in the historical center of Palermo, aimed at highlighting the pivotal role of knowledge in the design of these interventions. More particularly, the considered restoration site is fully described in its technical and operational aspects, strictly linked to the discipline of the technical architect, to show the higher scientific value that knowledge acquires while transposing research into a concrete engineering/architectural action that could be reproduced in similar cases. The objective of the described site is preserving and enhancing the building while adhering to the materials and construction techniques characteristic of the local architecture. The comprehensive examination of this structure, grounded in the principles of applied research on rehabilitation interventions, in compliance with historical architectural norms and technical regulations, is not merely focused on the original intervention but is contextualized within a broader vision of rehabilitation. This vision, albeit perhaps progressing at a slow pace, is crucial for the growth of the entire city, fostering continuous engagement and repopulation by the residents of Palermo and beyond. The historical center, once neglected for many years, now represents an urban space housing an artistic and cultural heritage of significant international importance, with substantial growth potential for the entire metropolitan area.

Recycled tyre aggregates (soft particles) mixed with common granular material such as crushed rock (rigid particles) are considered effective solutions for a range of applications in transportation geotechnics in recent years. While extensive research has been conducted on the mechanical properties and behaviour of sand-rubber combinations as unbound soft-rigid mixtures, most studies on bound soft-rigid mixtures have focussed on utilizing brittle binders like Portland cement. On the other hand, there have been only a few studies in recent years exploring the behaviour of soft-rigid mixtures bonded with non-brittle binders. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the impact of binder elasticity and stiffness on the compressibility mechanism of soft-rigid granular mixtures. One-dimensional compression tests complemented with shear wave velocity measurements were conducted on bound samples, using different types of binders, to investigate how the characteristics of binders influence the fabric of the mixture and, consequently, its behaviour. The findings indicate a multiphase behaviour of bound mixtures, in contrast to the single-phase behaviour of unbound mixtures, particularly for higher contents of binder and for brittle and semi-flexible binders.

Indoor mould growth is associated with poor indoor air quality (IAQ) and increased upper respiratory disease. Mould growth in homes is primarily dependent on the presence of moisture in the indoor environment and the type of building materials used. Traditional interior sheathing materials, such as gypsum drywall, contain an organic paper coating which is a known active site for mould growth when exposed to elevated moisture levels. In conditions in which interior moisture levels are challenging to control (e.g., due to strong weather-induced vapour drive, high internal moisture loads from overcrowding, lack of availability and/or use of ventilation systems), substitution of interior sheathing materials may reduce the prevalence of mould. As such, the introduction of novel materials that can effectively limit mould growth in high moisture environments is of critical importance. Magnesium oxide (MgO) board is one material that is proposed as a potentially mould-resistant, inorganic replacement for interior gypsum board. While this material has been used in building in China, Russia, Scandinavia, and parts of the USA, there is little to no research exploring its mould growth sensitivity. Through this work, two MgO board products and gypsum board samples were placed in a constant climate chamber (85% RH and 30 degrees C) and mould growth was observed over time. Both MgO products were observed to have a higher resistance to mould growth, indicating their potential as a replacement for gypsum wallboard in unfavorable indoor environments to reduce mould growth.

The downscaling calculation of wind environment has a significant impact on the reliability of urban microclimate simulation. The setting of boundary conditions in numerical simulation affects the accuracy of wind environment simulation. However, urban morphology is complex, and commonly used downscaling simulation methods are time-consuming and computationally intensive. In response to the above issues, this study proposes an ANN wind environment downscaling prediction model based on prototype block models (PBMs). The PBMs created in this study has added urban form indicators that can reflect the characteristics of wind environment. Taking the Nanjing area as an example, identify the prototype blocks within the research area and extract the geometric model of the prototype blocks. Then, through CFD simulation, build a wind environment database of PBMs. Then train the ANN model and validate its wind speed prediction performance with 7 PBM instances. By comparing the predictive performance of ANN under 15 combinations of explanatory variables, it was determined that the combination of FAR + FAI had the best overall predictive performance in terms of MAPE (0.144), RSME (0.237), and R2 (0.953). The ANN model based on PBM can be used to predict downscale wind speeds in cities.

During administrative modernization and its working environment, there is an increasing need to further develop the Pavement Management System (PMS) into an Asset Management (AM) system and also to organize the operating or delivery phase, which is the longest phase in the life cycle of an asset, with the help of BIM methodology. At present, there is no scientifically based method for estimating the future condition and development of the structural substance of the road structure or the useful life of the municipal road network in Germany. However, knowledge of the expected service life or the remaining service life of the individual asphalt layers in the superstructure is essential for a sustainable and economical maintenance strategy as well as the derivation and implementation of suitable maintenance construction measures. For this reason, a research project has been initiated. By linking a wide variety of data and its own measurements, the "DaRkSeit" project aims to develop software that for the first time maps the condition of roads in real time, taking structural aspects into account. This is essentially based on existing traffic observation data (8 + 1 classification of vehicles) and available weather and climate data as well as material data from existing roads. To achieve the project objectives, it is necessary to supplement the data in the road information system. This includes the specification of axle load data (classification in up to 60 vehicle types), the temperature condition in the road structure of asphalt roads and model parameters to describe the material behavior of the asphalts used. As a result, a prototype of a software-based real-time tool for calculating the progress of degradation and estimating the remaining service life of asphalt roads is to be developed.
