Europe has a very rich cultural heritage, which is visible in the large number of historical buildings and museums. Many of our museums are located in old, poorly insulated buildings making them energy-intensive to maintain the required boundary conditions for the valuable artifacts they house. Maintaining the desired indoor conditions and curbing the energy dependency of historical museums is therefore challenging. This study presents the procedure allowing to examine the potential improvement of buildings housed/stored heritage. The examined case study, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts (KMSKB) museum, was assessed in terms of its energy efficiency and indoor climate management, considering collection preservation. More reasonable indoor climate control can be assessed by employing different levels of climate control, following e.g. climate classes provided by ASHRAE. The above-mentioned requires knowledge of the building dynamics to effectively perform necessary analyses. In these complex historical buildings, however, many uncertainties hinder the application of conventional techniques to optimize energy use while reaching desired targets of preventive conservation and indoor comfort. This paper presents a procedure for the identification of the historic building's dynamics employing numerical techniques: correlation analysis, energy signature (ES) modeling, and grey-box models (GBM). This approach can be used for indoor climate control or energy consumption forecasting of the building, as well as to uncover and deploy short-term optimization for the existing infrastructure. This study is a part of the ongoing Climate2Preserv pilot project, intending to develop a toolbox applicable for the optimization of museums.

The Italian architectural heritage, in particular that linked to education, learning and research, is rather dated since in some cases schools and universities are set up into historical buildings that have been adapted and reused (mostly former convents and barracks) or new buildings specially created, that largely date back to the last century, according to typology distribution and construction technologies that are difficult suitable with the needs of digital and computerized teaching and with the dynamism of research activities. It follows that spaces for education and research often demonstrate poor functionality compared to current requirements and inadequacy with respect to the needs of both energy-environmental and economic-management sustainability. Fortunately, since 2019 a season of modernization of university structures has opened thanks to two MUR tenders which have made over 1,900 million euros available to universities for redevelopment, modernization and renewal projects of spaces to be allocated to institutional activities. This contribution aims to underline the role that universities can play as drivers of urban regeneration and building redevelopment thanks to the projects that these fundings (absent for too long) will guarantee in the coming years. New buildings for learning and research can be the starting point for a new sustainable future because they can support the establishment of a sustainable culture due to their impact on next generation. Referring to a specific case study (the urban regeneration of the Scientific Institutes area of the University of Pavia) the paper highlights approaches and methods that can also be exported to other similar contexts (in terms of size, functions and organization) through a cognitive analysis, sustainability-oriented planning and programming followed by participatory and multidisciplinary planning, essential to achieve the objectives of quality education (SDG 4) and sustainable cities and communities (

A very important task to improve the sustainability of existing structures is to extend their service life especially in terms of resource conservation and sustainability. Therefore, the assessment and the required safety level of an existing structure are of particular importance (condition monitoring).This paper presents how the elements of reliability analysis can be combined with the elements of in-depth testing and monitoring procedures to periodically evaluate the degradation processes due to changing environmental conditions and new building materials. Subsequently, the remaining service life can be continuously updated with the help of semi-probabilistic partial safety considerations.

The damping ratio of site soil is one of the important factors in affecting the propagation and attenuation of ground vibration. Herein, a method is proposed to obtain the random distribution of subsoil damping ratio by field experiment and Bayesian theory. An on-site experiment was carried out and the experimental attenuation curve of the surface wave has been obtained by combining the half power bandwidth method in frequency-wavenumber domain. A priori probability distribution model and the likelihood function of soil damping ratio with depth is established based on the experimental curves. Then, the posterior probability distribution model is further obtained by means of the Monte Carlo Markov Chain-Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, which can be input to Thin-layered soil model to accomplish the interval estimation of ground vibration. Compared with the traditional deterministic prediction, the proposed probability prediction method is more reasonable and has more application value in predicting the environmental vibration induced by rail traffic.

Buildings are responsible for more than 40% of the world's energy consumption, with heating and cooling being the primary contributors, resulting in up to one-third of total greenhouse gas emissions. The residential sector accounts for a quarter of global electricity consumption, and in the Arab Mashreq and Maghreb countries, residential buildings consume around 41% of the total electricity, mainly for heating and cooling. Existing residential buildings constitute a significant portion of the total building stock and, as such, play a crucial role in the overall performance of the building sector. To address this issue, it is essential to invest in the energy retrofitting of existing residential buildings. The first step must be the characterization of the buildings performance and understand the impact of the current construction solutions. To that end, a year-long monitoring campaign in two occupied apartments in Jordan, one in Amman and another in Irbid, monitored air temperature and relative humidity in kitchen, bedroom, and living room areas. Results, evaluated using EN16798, revealed that the use of heating devices were necessary for winter comfort, while in summer periods with overheating risk, can be mitigated by natural ventilation through window openings. An initial discussion concerning the impact of the thermal properties of the construction fabric of the buildings is crucial, paving the way for retrofitting proposals based on sustainable and cost-effective alternatives.

In ocean engineering projects, submerged semi-cylindrical structures are used as sea crossing tunnels. Previous studies have extensively examined the flow field around cylindrical structures, but research on flow around semi-cylinders is relatively limited. This paper presents a physical experiment on flow features around smooth and coarse semi-cylindrical structures under current conditions. The experiment results demonstrate that the surface roughnesses of the semi-cylinders significantly influences the features of the flow field around the structure, including turbulence intensities and the turbulence kinetic energy of the wake flow. Specifically, a coarser surface on the semi-cylinder could decrease the turbulence intensity of the wake, which could effectively minimize potential local scour downstream of it.

This study discusses the development of a soundscape tool for urban park design utilizing audio-visual interactions. The results showed that shrubs and dense trees were the most favored options for sound insulation;with selection ratios of 16% and 76% under medium noise annoyance and 16.3%, 38.2% under high noise annoyance, respectively. Birdsong, insect chirping and rain were found to be the most favored additions to the augmented soundscapes, the selection ratios were 90%, 90.3% and 90% for low noise annoyance, 75%, 64.5% and 72.4% for medium noise annoyance, and 40%, 64.5% and 69% for high noise annoyance. The study also discovered that as noise annoyance rise, so does the ratio of people who choose traditional soundproof walls, with a 37.5% increase from medium to high noise annoyance, as well as the types of augmented soundscapes chosen, with an average of 3, 4.6, and 5.3 types of augmented soundscapes per person under low, medium, and high noise annoyance, respectively. The soundscape tool is expected to provide guidance for the design of audio-visual interactions in urban parks.

Measurement of heat transfer holds significant importance in the construction industry, especially with new regulations aimed at reducing energy consumption. Various types of measurements are required to assess the thermal performance of walls. Among the most common is the HFM method, based on the measurement of heat flow using heat flow sensors (HFS). New insulation materials used in construction are often highly hygroscopic, or at least vapor permeable, which means that heat transfer through these materials also involves simultaneous mass transfer. Using heat flow sensors can locally alter this mass transfer, sometimes acting as a vapor barrier: this alters local moisture transfer and the associated latent heat flux. In this study, the aim is to gain a better understanding of the latent heat flow associated with these transfers. For this purpose, the focus is on developing a new method for measuring heat transfer, using solid (vapor tight) and perforated flow sensors, the latter allowing mass diffusion through materials. A test bench is set up incorporating a heated plate. This approach is applied to vapor-open insulation materials, such as mineral wools with large or low mass transfer.

The utility tunnel built under roads are important facilities for daily life, and the disruption of utilities due to damage has a significant impact on urban functions. In the inspection of utility tunnel, it is necessary to accurately record the state of damaged areas in the facility and to share information among the affiliates for appropriate repairs. In this study, we developed a system to visualize the location and contents of inspection and damage information by linking three-dimensional point cloud data with two-dimensional maps, with the aim of realizing maintenance and management of utility tunnel. For this purpose, we showed the points to be considered by measuring and constructing three-dimensional data in the unique environment of underground ditches, and devised a system to utilize the constructed data for maintenance and management. The proposed system is based on a two-dimensional map and three-dimensional point cloud data, and in addition to the conventional management method for grasping the distribution of damage and its positional relationship with the ground through a bird's-eye view, it is equipped with a function to grasp the surrounding conditions and the three-dimensional location of damage while checking inspection information. The evaluation results suggested that measuring, constructing, and visualizing a common duct as three-dimensional data is useful for understanding the location of a ditch in relation to a cave channel at another level and for evaluating the deformation of the structure, and that it is also useful as a base for combining information such as inspection information and map information.

The built environment is composed of multiple heterogeneous independent systems that are distributed across multiple levels (e.g., team, project, regional, state, and national) forming its functional hierarchy. The low-level interactions continuously taking place between the connected subsystems in the built environment result in a collective emergent behavior that can be observed only at the upper level. Such behavior can be either desirable or undesirable, significantly impacting various planning and management considerations at different levels within the built environment (i.e., ranging from construction productivity and safety management to infrastructure planning and operations). While the concept of emergent behavior is well known in the field of systems engineering, its consideration remains limited in the built environment-related research and practice. In order to fill this gap, this study aims to develop a taxonomy for emergent behavior in the built environment. It reviews and analyzes existing studies in the construction and infrastructure engineering and management literature where the phenomenon of emergent behavior was acknowledged for the purpose of identifying emergence-related distinguishing patterns. As such, four main types of emergent behavior in the built environment are identified, distinguished based on three principle discriminating features: (i) the nature of underlying interactions, (ii) the level of complexity, and (iii) the boundaries of the information available. The proposed taxonomy is used to guide and facilitate proper modeling, analysis, and quantification of emergent behavior in construction and infrastructure-related contexts. Ultimately, this can serve as a foundation for harnessing the concept of emergence in the planning and management of more optimized and controlled processes in the built environment.
