Historic structures are not only a part of our cultural identity, but also a component of our daily life. Most of these heritage presences - objects, buildings, landscapes - are embedded in our habitat, in our cities and are influencing the way we are foreseeing the future. The strategies and methodologies developed for the material conservation of historic structures must be integrated with the projects for tomorrow. It is not only about blending old and new, but about integrating the reshaped, re-informed elements of the past into an evolutionary process. Our office, "Andreescu&Gaivoronschi", has been involved in heritage projects from conserving singular objects to large-scale urban landscaping and landscaping designs. We confronted challenges regarding methodologies, proceedings, material research. During our work we discovered the important, less evident parts of heritage: geometry, visual connectivity, meaning;we also became aware of the benefits of using contemporary art. The goal was to imagine new and meaningful roles for the remnants of the paSt. The paper presents our quest and findings, following a string of projects organized according to scale.

In this study we present the isotopic signatures of quarries located in North-East (Tempi, Tisaion, Pangaio), Southern (Hymittos, Penteli) Greece in order to enrich the existing databases used in ancient marble provenance. This expansion of the databases will enhance our understanding in the archaeological characterization of ancient monuments and potentially determine economic and cultural associations and trade routes. Furthermore, it will reduce the overlap of the isotopic signals of marbles in the up to nowdatabases, enhancing the dissemination and facilitate the provenance studies of the ancient marble monuments

Characterization, assessment, and management of the complexities and uncertainties incorporated with flood risk are important for the operationalization of flood risk management. Flood risk is required to be managed by the integration of objectives all stakeholders who are associated with it. Therefore, the operationalization of flood risk management is determined by the conceptualization and assessment of flood risk in the planning process, as well as the discourse of the stakeholders in the governance context, and the available interaction mechanisms for participatory decision making. This research paper reviews the level of operationalization of flood resilience of the current practice of flood risk management considering the Sri Lankan context. Panadura urban area has been selected as the case study and it is a coastal urban area, which located in the downstream of the Bolgoda basin. Bolgoda basin which is in the wet zone of Sri Lanka is affected by frequent floods particular during the southwest monsoons. The case study has highlighted that flood risk and land uses are planned and managed separately in the current practice. This study has further highlighted, that at present, spatial planning is not able to provide a common guideline for stakeholders' integration in the face of increasing flood risk. There is an obstruction in the practice of Flood Risk Management due to the absence of a common framework for risk assessment and management of all the stakeholders. Therefore, this study has highlighted that spatial planning practices are yet to adapt to the notion of resilience for structuring the uncertainties in flood risk management.

Shaking table tests are planned in order to deepen the understanding of the behavior of confined masonry structures with or without openings. This paper presents the observations from a series of shaking-table tests done on a 1:1 scaled confined masonry wall model without openings (model CMF). Frequency and stiffness changes before and afterGFRPwall strengthening are analyzed. Themain targets of this research are assessment of the influence of location and area of the opening on the load-bearing capacity, rigidity and ductility of confined masonry, definition of appropriate systems for improvement of the stiffness, load capacity and ductility of the system and contribution in the assessment procedures proposed formasonry building in Eurocode 8. The initial frequency of the undamaged model CMFuS is 24,63 Hz, while at the end of the testing, the frequency decreased to 10,60 Hz. This emphasizes the reduction of the initial stiffness of the model due to damage, especially in the masonry and tie-beam to tie-column connection. After strengthening of the damaged wall, the natural frequency increases to 19,78 Hz. This highlights the beneficial effect of the strengthening. After completion of dynamic testing at CMFS, the natural frequency is reduced to 12,48 Hz.

Continuous plate members are often used as structural elements of building such as roofs, parking and deck of bridges. When designing such structures, approximation methods are usually employed, because analytical approaches based on the plate theory are complex and require a lot of mathematical manipulations. In the present investigation, a simplified method obtained by using plate theory is proposed for analyzing continuous plates over rigid supports. This simplified method for continuous plates are obtained by considering the force method technique, introducing hinge at intermediate supports and apply redundant moments at those supports to substitute the removed restraints. Afterwards, a three-moment equation and seven-moment equations for continuous plates are derived by using superposition of the Levy's solution and the Navier's one as deflections of plates, and consideration of the continuity of the slope at adjoining edges. To confirm the validity of the present method, numerical examples are performed and the results are compared with those by Finite Difference Method and solutions obtained by means of Marcus Table.

This study focuses on developing a geospatial clustering-based methodology using the k-means method, which could be applied by city planners to effectively classify key urban form indicators concerning the ventilation environment in Bangkok city, Thailand. All indicators were calculated with standard GIS-based tools commonly utilized by urban planners. The results showed that the inner core of the city's forms is heterogeneous, including three precinct ventilation zones. In this study, the precinct ventilation map could be used to propose primary investigations for delimiting the main problem areas in terms of natural ventilation performance during the initial stage for urban heat mitigation and air quality management planning.

For the preservation of historic architecture, historic building structures in areas prone to seismic excitations should have sufficient aseismic performance. A useful approach for enhancing the aseismic performance of historic buildings is aseismic retrofitting, where energy dissipation elements, such as frictional devices, are installed. However, for conventional friction dampers (FDs), an increase in damper force increases the story shear force and response acceleration under earthquakes. The authors previously developed a passive variable friction damper (VFD) that produces a decreased frictional force when the device displacement exceeds a predetermined value. In the present study, a time history response simulation was conducted using a nonlinear analytical model assuming a historic building made of a reinforced concrete structure retrofitted by the VFD subjected to earthquakes. The seismic responses were compared to those obtained with the FD. The results show that the VFD reduced the peak response story shear force and acceleration compared with those for the FD.

The article presents the results of studies on the study of the contact zone of masonry mixtures, with the aim of developing compositions for the construction of walls and partitions made of bricks and blocks in seismically active regions. Analyzes of the developed compositions, theoretical and practical substantiation of high adhesive capacity in conditions of high seismic activity are presented. Methods of using non-fired binders based on high-modulus silicate components are proposed. The technological scheme and methods of obtaining universal masonry mortars providing high adhesive capacity and adhesion strength are presented. When studying the "brick-mortar" contact zone by X-ray thermal electron probe microanalysis, a regular relationship between the chemical compounds of the system was established and the correlation dependence of the micro hardness of neoplasm's in the contact zone was determined. It has been established that an increased concentration of sodium, aluminum, silicon is observed in the contact zone, which contribute to the intensification of the formation of a dense microstructure due to the presence in it of water-resistant neoplasm's such as low-basic hydro silicates and alkaline hydro aluminates. These new formations constitute the structural matrix (frame) of the contact zone and play the role of a damper at the time of the action of alternating seismic loads. The developed compositions have found application as universal masonry mortars in the construction of brick walls with the provision of category I adhesion strength.

This paper presented an investigation on the effective charging time of electro-osmotic consolidation (EC) formarine clayey soils. According to the previous experimental data, the theoretical analysis and the relevant formulae are deduced for the soil parameters, including water discharge, water discharge rate, normalized current, effective charging time, and so forth. Based on the different experiments, the water discharge-time curves can be approximated as a polynomial curve. The water discharge rate is defined as the water discharge in a unit time, it characterized the drainage velocity during the electro-osmosis process. The normalized current I-0(t) which is defined as the ratio of the current at a certain time to the initial current is employed to analyze the termination time and current. The analysis results provide the reasonable theories for the related researches and also demonstrate the feasibility of EC for the clayey soils.

Currently, the plans for the protection of historical groups tend to be sustainable in the management of Heritage, covering the conservation, intervention and dissemination phases. The interoperability of operators in rehabilitation - archaeologists, architects, historians, engineers, restorers - is essential and for this it is necessary that there is a workflow. In addition, new data acquisition technologies, scanning and photogrammetry techniques, are helping to capture the real state of historical constructions, allowing an analysis of processes, materials and pathologies, essential for prevention and maintenance. of the historical building. These standardized operations provide us with data that must be continuously recorded. A para-loyal commitment is the management of the information collected by the different experts, its sharing and the deposit in an alphanumeric data container model. It is here that the H-BIM project takes a fundamental role, having a virtual 3D model of multidisciplinary information. In this investigation a workflow is developed in which the numerical models obtained through laser and photogrammetry scans and the parametric model based on the orthophoto sequences generated in a previous restoration are superimposed. For this, the Church of the Society of Jesus is taken as a study, emblem of that Latin American baroque that the Jesuit order built between 1605 - 1765 in Quito (Ecuador). The preparation phases are structured to adequately model a historical building of these characteristics, breaking down the different stages and presenting its Level of Development -LOD-, detail and information.
