The new model of circular economy and digitalization promoted by the recent normative framework of the European Union opens new scenarios of integration between sustainable buildings and built heritage conservation that led to the emergence of a new transversal ethic of sustainability based on knowledge of materials and their circular use in construction with a leading role for the expertise of the scientific-disciplinary sector of Architectural engineering. The building sustainability requirements and the widespread degradation of the built heritage, in many cases reduced to the state of dilapidated buildings or ruins, give to materials and building components an intrinsic value downgrading the need for the conservation of the building organism or what remains of it. Circular design offers the possibility of a reformulation of the connections between construction and the life of materials and building component that neither begins nor ends with their use in buildings or specific locations. On the contrary, the reuse of heritage materials and building components can transform the loss of construction into a potential gain in a continuous history of use, deconstruction, and reuse. The paper focuses on the study of the state-of-the-art on Materials Passports with the objectives of the development of Building Heritage Materials Passports (BHMPs) for the recovery of materials and building component belonging to dilapidated built heritage in the inner areas of the Basilicata region, the rediscovery of local buildings technologies and their recognition by communities as common goods and inexhaustible resources. By leveraging the sustainability of the ancient ways of building and inhabiting places, the paper promotes "care actions" of tangible and intangible building heritage with the involvement of communities in Living Labs able to strengthen the resilience to abrupt climate change, transforming needs into opportunities for sustainable development.

The integration of semantic web technologies in the Architecture, engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry has gained momentum in recent years, with promising studies being conducted for various use cases. Furthermore, its necessity has been implied in the Building Information Modelling (BIM) Maturity Level 3, which focuses on fully integrated collaboration and open data standards and transfer. The main drivers of implementing semantic web technologies in a multi-data environment like the AEC industry are to overcome interoperability issues, link across domains, and facilitate logical inference and proof. The construction execution phase encompasses multiple stakeholders delivering data from multiple domains in heterogeneous formats, which needs to be put to better use for optimal project delivery. Thus, this study explores how semantic web technology can be applied for BIM-based project management and control during the execution phase through a comprehensive review of the literature to identify existing semantic web applications and their limitations to determine the gaps in knowledge. The development of ifcOWL ontology has spurred attention on developing domain ontologies to be integrated with the ifcOWL for the seamless automation of construction activities. The study identified several ontology-based semantic web applications for project control in a BIM-based environment, for example, 4Dcollab ontology for Synchronous Collaboration Sessions for decision making, LinkOnt for lookahead planning enabled construction constraint checking, CPPC ontology for construction product control, etc. Furthermore, many studies were recorded related to semantic web technology-based 4D BIM use cases, such as automated schedule generation, automated construction sequencing, collaboration, and constraint checking. Masonry structures behave in a heterogeneous manner since they consist of different materials (i.e., blocks, mortar, grout, and reinforcement) with different mechanical properties. This makes their behavior more arbitrary, complicated, and challenging to predict due to the presence of various components. Although there is a considerable number of experimental investigations for masonry prisms in the literature, these investigations mainly focused on the ultimate capacity and corresponding strain, whereas complete data, including the post-peak behavior, is minimal. The interpretation of the complete compressive stress-strain curve of fully grouted and ungrouted web and boundary element assemblages is essential to understand the response of reinforced masonry shear walls (RMSWs) as structural elements subjected to lateral forces. Therefore, this study presents an experimental investigation of the mechanical properties of masonry assemblages under axial compression loading. Twenty-eight masonry prisms were constructed and tested to investigate the axial compressive response of fully grouted, ungrouted, and boundary element masonry assemblages according to CSA S304-14. Additionally, 100 x 200 mm cylinders of grout and 50 mm mortar cube specimens, sampled during the construction of the prisms, were tested according to CSA A179-14 and ASTM C109M-13, respectively. The results provide complete compressive stress-strain curves for grouted, ungrouted, and C-shaped boundary element prisms. The results showed that the ungrouted prisms have higher peak compressive stress than their grouted counterparts. Moreover, the boundary element prisms demonstrated relatively higher compressive strength than fully grouted web prisms.

civil structures may experience various levels of damage during their life cycle due to exposure to different load conditions. Damage severity prediction in structural elements is a critical task to provide optimal maintenance in a timely manner that leads to reduced maintenance costs and avoids any catastrophic failure that may cause serious loss and danger to the owners and end-users. The acoustic Emission (AE) technique is one of the powerful non-destructive testing (NDT) methodologies that can be employed to detect and predict the severity of damage in different systems. Multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) is the extended version of EMD that can analyze multichannel signals collected from different sensors. In this paper, the damage severity prediction approach based on the combination of MEMD and the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) model is proposed. Unlike existing methods that rely on a single AE measurement, MEMD is used to extract the key AE components that belong to cracks using AE data collected from multiple sensors. The statistical features (e.g., mean, root mean square, kurtosis, skewness, and crest factor) of AE components obtained from MEMD are subsequently estimated. The selected features are then used in the GMM model to predict different severity damages (e.g., minor, and severe levels of damage). Numerical and experimental studies are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed method using a sine example and a large-scale reinforced concrete (RC) beam, respectively. The results show that the proposed approach can accurately predict the severity of damage in the structural elements.

The conventional disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste increases the burden of landfills. Recycling and reusing can be an environmentally friendly and economically affordable means for the management of C&D waste. This paper investigated the performance of aggregate with different mixture percentages of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and natural aggregate (NA) with diverse fine contents as road base materials. The compaction behaviour, California bearing ratio (CBR), and resilient modulus were determined. The results indicated that the mixture containing 50% RCA had the highest CBR values and resilient modulus. This suggested CBR and resilient properties of NA can be improved by the incorporation of RCA.

Plant roots can provide mechanical reinforcement to the soil by increasing its tensile strength. The ability of roots to resist pull-out forces from soil is known as root tensile strength (T-r). Understanding the factors affecting tensile strength is important in evaluating the effectiveness of vegetation in soil reinforcement. The slope stabilization using grasses is an effective way to mitigate the coalmine overburden dump slope failures. This paper aims at exploring the root tensile strength of Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass) cultivated under six different proportions of coalmine overburden mixed cow dung. A detailed discussion has been presented on the importance of Tr for estimating the enhanced shear strength. It was observed that the root diameter is inversely associated with the T-r (MPa). Among all the six plants, the highest T-r (324.54 MPa) was found in the plant under overburden with 20% organic amendment. The species-dependent scale factors and rate of strength decay were also determined for each plant of Lemon grass. These values can be utilized in conjunction with root area ratio to determine the extent of soil reinforcement indirectly. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved in root-soil interaction can contribute to the development of more effective vegetation-based soil reinforcement techniques.

As cities continue to expand and densify, understanding how buildings affect people's perception and experience of the acoustic environment in context becomes more relevant. This paper presents a conceptual framework of the influence of facades on the urban soundscape, based on the ISO 12913 series, in order to analyze the three main elements of the soundscape: people, acoustic environment and context, along with facade as a fourth element. The methodology included literature review, as well as an exploration of the ISO 12913 methods for soundscape assessment via soundwalks and laboratory experiments involving a total of forty-three (n = 43) participants. The results provide a promising framework for facade analysis to progress toward the integration of human-centered approaches into the field of facade acoustics and complement current building physics practice.

Olive stone is a major solid by-product generated from olive oil mills. Due to its promising energy potential, olive stone is a suitable candidate for heat and electricity production via biomass gasification. Olive stone biochar (OSB) is the solid residue left after gasification. Typically, OSB is disposed of as a waste material in landfills. However, there is an opportunity to repurpose OSB as a sustainable geotechnical fillmaterial. In this study, the engineering and environmental properties of OSB were thoroughly evaluated to assess the feasibility of using OSB in construction projects. Furthermore, recycled glass (RG), a mainstream waste material that has been successfully incorporated in civil engineering applications, was subjected to control tests for benchmarking purposes. Geotechnical tests, including particle size distribution, standard Proctor compaction, California Bearing Ratio, hydraulic conductivity, and repeated load triaxial, were conducted on both OSB and RG. The test results indicated that OSB can be satisfactorily used as a geotechnical fill material for pavement subgrade. Environmental test results, including pH, elemental analysis, and leachate analysis, indicated that the implementation of OSB in construction works does not pose negative environmental risks. Instead, the reuse of OSB in civil engineering applications can promote the circular economy of biomass waste, as not only olive stone can be used for energy generation, but also the residue after gasification has the potential to act as a useful construction material.

In March 2022, multiple natural disaster storm events caused flooding and slope failures across southern New South Wales (NSW), Australia, with over 750 mm of rainfall recorded across the Illawarra. Prolonged rainfall throughout the year led to over 100 recorded slope incidents with multiple closures across the Transport for NSW (TfNSW) network in the South Region. Two landslide case studies affecting TfNSW assets during the aforementioned storm events are presented herein. The paper will highlight the collaborative design and construction methodologies that allowed for expedited repair of the assets. Site 8 was a large fill embankment slip along a mountain pass that under-mined the westbound travel lane, creating stability concerns for the road. Due to the slope failures, the local communities were isolated and reinstating access was designated high priority. Remedial options considered included lightweight fill, soil nails and embankment reconstruction with earthfill. The preferred remedial option incorporated soil nails and embankment reconstruction using rockfill. Delivered in collaboration with Private Industry, and awarded as a design and construct contract, the works were completed within 3 months. Site 81 was an approximately 150 mm long tension crack at the crest of a fill embankment along the Illawarra Highway affecting both travel lanes. Due to continued and significant movement, the Highway was closed. This resulted in up to 2-h detours for the community. Remedial options considered included soil nails, a piled wall and lightweight fill. The preferred remedial option was a reconstruction using rockfill in combination with synthetic geogrids. TfNSW delivered the design and construction in 1 month.

Permeable pavements possibly offer a dual solution to climate change challenges in increasingly urbanized areas. They mitigate flooding by absorbing moisture and they combat the urban heat island effect by promoting moisture evaporation, thus lowering surface temperatures. However, practical implementation has been hindered by a lack of comprehensive research. This study investigates the influence of material properties and top layer thickness on rainwater runoff and surface temperature through hygrothermal simulations, focusing exclusively on these factors for brevity. Examining material properties using the Van Genuchten - Mualem expressions reveals the key parameters affecting runoff and temperature. Capillary moisture content and capillary permeability significantly impact both outcomes. Moreover, a weaker correlation between mean pore radius and rainwater runoff is identified. Additionally, varying top layer thickness demonstrates its role in reducing runoff and surface temperature. The study also considers different climates, confirming the general validity of the findings. Ultimately, this research provides valuable insights into the efficacy of permeable pavements in mitigating flooding and the urban heat island effect, offering guidance for their practical application.
