Evaluation of seismic stability and behavior of structures involves several important aspects and activities that should be considered. Among these is testing of scaled models on a shaking table. Within several complex international projects related to the problem of seismic stability of historic masonry structures, a number of tests were performed on the 5DOF shake table in theDynamic Testing Laboratory of the Institute of Earthquake engineering and engineering Seismology in Skopje. Most of these tests were aimed at experimental verification of new proposed methodologies for repair and seismic strengthening by testing models of representative existing prototype structures for specific types of monuments. Some models were tested mainly for the purpose of assessing the vulnerability of a particular monument or to estimate the intensity of a past earthquake as a reason for existing damage. The applied testing procedure, the obtained experimental results and the main conclusions on selected and characteristic historic masonry structure models tested in the past, as well as recently tested models of the stone masonry arch bridge - the Old Bridge in Mostar and the ancient dry masonry Protiron structure in Split will be presented.

The development of lower to middle-class apartments in big cities in Indonesia continues to increase due to urbanization. The increase in the growth of apartments in this class will of course directly affect the rise in building material needs for construction. This is also elevating energy consumption and carbon emissions. This research will explain how the use of materials in apartment building construction can affect embodied energy and carbon emissions. This study uses the IO table method as method for calculating embodied energy and carbon emissions. This research selects three case studies of low-cost and middle-class apartment construction in several big cities in Indonesia. The results indicate that the EE value and GHG emissions in low-cost apartments have a similar pattern. Works that use cement and concrete materials are the ones that have the biggest contribution to architectural work, such as screeding work and precast work. The volume reduction and the selection of the right construction technique such as high-intensity cement materials can be an option in reducing the value of embodied energy and carbon.

This paper aims to present the first results of a research program(In the context of the doctoral thesis, conducted by the architect Mrs. Eirini Tsetine, with a scholarship from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI), supervised by Prof. Mr. N. Lianos and is part of the research programs of the Morphology-Rhythmology Laboratory of DUTH.) which examines the refugee settlements that were established in the prefecture of Xanthi, in northern Greece, after the end of the Asia Minor Campaign (1919-1922), to permanently accommodate the refugees coming from the regions of Asia Minor, Eastern Thrace and Pontus. The refugee flowtowardsGreece, whichwas originally initiated before the armed conflict, continued during the events of the Asia Minor Campaign (1919-1922) and was finally concluded with the exchange of population between Greece and Turkey, as dictated by the Treaty of Lausanne (Lianos 2013, p. 1). The permanent settlement of the refugees was carried out under the auspices of the League of Nations, via the establishment of the Refugee Settlement Commission (RSC). The refugee settlements were divided into two main categories, rural and urban. Urban refugee settlementswere created in cities such asAthens and Piraeus and regions such as Thessaly, central Greece, the Aegean islands, Macedonia and Western Thrace. Especially in the last area, where Xanthi is located, the need for housing was higher, as the Muslim population had been excluded from the compulsory exchange and for this reason, there were not enough empty properties to be reused for the settlement of the refugees. The urban refugee settlements of Xanthi belong in this wide network, that was established throughout Greece, and they consist of four areas known as "Stratonon", "Kyplselis" and "Gymnastiriou" settlement and part of the "Assa" district. Hot-dip Al coating is an effective and economical protection method for steel structures. Hot-dip Al coated steel members have also been used in the case that contact with concrete. Al is an amphoteric metal that can react with acid and alkaline. Concrete is an alkalinematerial. The corrosion behavior of hot-dip Al coating contact with concrete is studied by measurement OCP and monitoring the change of pH during the hardening process of concrete. And the atmospheric test that simulates the actual structures. The corrosion products are analyzed by the diffraction of Xrays (XRD). The hot-dip Al coating can be dissolved during the hardening process. With the decreasing pH of concrete, the Al coating also has a relatively stable due to the passivation effect. In the dry and no stagnant water environment, the hot-dip Al coating has a better anti-corrosion behavior due to the passivation and shielding effect of complex calcium-aluminum compounds.

This study aims at the acquisition of a reliable image of the nonvisible parts of historical masonry buildings in Greece by in-situ application of non-destructive techniques (NDTs). To serve the purpose of obtaining overall conclusions on the documentation of the monuments' internal condition, the deriving results are examined and combined together with the in-situ observations. The structures under investigation are the Katholikon of Osios Loucas Monastery (Boeteia), the Monastery of Kaisariani (Attica), the Agia Paraskevi Church (Chalkida) and the Nativity of Christ's Church (Athens). The main investigation method applied on all monuments was that of the Ground Penetrating Radar. Additionally, the methods of Boroscopy and Schmidt Hammer Testing were also used when further investigation was required. The techniques were applied on targeted areas, representative for the entire examined structure. Thanks to the assessment of the results, it was possible to identify data relevant to the dimensions and the type of stones used in the piers and the three-leaf masonries, the thickness and the condition of the mortar and the infill, the coexistence of different construction types in a structure, as well as the approximate compressive strength of stones.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the thermal and energy performance of different earth construction methods, particularly in Jordan's Mediterranean climatic zone. AnIES-VE simulationwas conducted to compare five proposed earth construction methods against historic and conventional construction methods used in Jordan, in terms of indoor air temperature performance and operational heating and cooling demand. The findings from the simulation analysis show that a double compressed earth block (CEB) wall constructed model and a hybrid wall constructed model consume the smallest amount of operational energy and have the best thermal winter performance. Moreover, the historic earth wall construction methods perform slightly better than other options during summer. It is concluded that if the appropriate earthen construction method is adopted and combined with suitable passive strategies, earth construction can perform better than conventional building methods used in Jordan's Mediterranean climatic zone, resulting in energy-efficient and comfortable structures.

The building is a masterpiece of the industrial architecture in the thirties of XX century. The original design is the work of the architect Rudolf Fischer. The construction of the building is realized in the period 1924-1925. The combination of different construction materials: masonry, reinforced concrete and timber, gives a unique structure. This contribution introduces a structural investigation, using MFE software, into the stability and efficiency of the design of the roof truss of the storage heritage building in Kustendil. A two dimensional model was used in numerical analysis to discuss and highlight structural sense of Austrian architect R. Fischer in the period of 1925-1925. The modeling of timber construction and the final conclusions are basic for the decision concerning the possible interventions in the building and the possibility to extend the service life of the roof structure.

When central Mexico, was conquered by Spaniards, the Conquistadors immediately began the process of colonization for which communication channels were necessary to bring the population under the power of the Spanish Crown. Since one of Spain's principal interests was extraction of precious metals: silver and gold, new regions were colonized and mines developed. Roads were built to access these mine fields, supply them with inputs and export the products which simultaneously led to growth in other productive sectors. Two main, perpendicular communication axes were opened during the Viceroyalty period. The first was opened from east to west from Veracruz port (Gulf of Mexico coast) to Mexico City and then to Acapulco port (Pacific Ocean). A north-south axis connected Mexico City with mining regions to the North and to the South. This investigation shows the methodology used to georeference a part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, in the Queretaro State. It started with old cartography review (XVIII and XIX century maps);followed up with the direct walk of the route in almost 300-km long trip, obtaining direct information, a photographic survey of the route and face-to-face interview with people still living close to the Camino Real vestiges.

Traditional architecture usually had its characteristic related to its users and climate. For Thai traditional houses, daylighting sequences between spaces were considered as their dominant characteristics to provide visual comfort during the daytime. The highlight is the daylighting characteristic of the verandah, a blurred space between brightness and darkness. The average luminance in the field of view, vertical illuminance at the eye level, and several daylighting glare evaluation indices were analysed to understand daylighting conditions of the verandah. The methods included a field study, an image processing technique, and a discomfort glare evaluation. The results found that DGP and DGI scores reported satisfying condition of discomfort glare. This semi-outdoor verandah showed to have a low level of luminance, which help reduced discomfort glare sensation along with its building form and wooden construction. The results also confirmed that the setting of Thai traditional houses among tropical gardens is vital to ensure visual comfort to lesser the glare sources. The understanding of daylighting ambiance would help designers and architects to recreate local identity and aesthetics.

This paper examines the experimental structural response of clay brick lime mortar masonry walls in wet and ambient-dry conditions. The properties of fired-clay bricks and hydraulic lime-mortar materials are selected to resemble those of existing heritage masonry structures in Historic Cairo. The investigation includes tests on square panels under diagonal compression, and large-scale walls subjected to gravity loading and in-plane lateral cyclic displacements. In addition to the conditioning type, the effectiveness of strengthening with helical bars in horizontal bed joints is also investigated. Implications of embedding helical bars in lime mortar as well as the provision of end anchorages are assessed. The complete load-deformation response of the large-scale members is also evaluated, including the main behavioural characteristics and failure modes. The results show that moisture has a notable effect on the main mechanical properties and overall structural response of such masonry components. For the panels subjected to diagonal compression, the strength reduction under wet conditions is shown to be more than 40% compared to the dry counterparts. For the large-scale walls, subjected to combined lateral loading and precompression, this reduction is significantly lower but can exceed 10%. It is also shown that the provision of helical bars can, depending on their end anchorage and arrangement, double the diagonal tension strength of masonry and offset the adverse effects occurring due to moisture.
