Industrial FrenchWharf of Lavrionwas built in 1888 by French Mining Company of Lavrion and it was used by the ships in order to load and unload their carriage which mainly were mining materials, coal or commercial everyday products. Today it stands as a monument of significant industrial heritage. Referring to its operation, a different loading and unloading spot on the top of the wharf was used, depending on the type of the transported product. The loading of the ships with minerals was accomplished by means of carriages filled with the product, manually guided on railway lines in the top of the wharf by the workers. When the transportation of commercial products was desired, two steam cranes located to the left and right of the wharf were used, which around late 50s were substituted by a conveyor belt system to transport the minerals from the loading area to the end of the wharf in a continuous way using electrical power. It can be assumed that through the years of the wharf's operation, various mechanical devices and mechanisms were used and therefore understanding and describing their operation became of great interest form a historical and industrial point of view. This work aims to present, explain and evaluate the mechanical loading and unloading mechanisms of the wharf, which were found to be: a) carriages and rail way equipment b) a belt conveyor and c) one steam load lifting crane. Regarding the train-related equipment, this study focuses into understanding the operation of the carriages transportation as the design of the corresponding railways showed some remarkable characteristics, while the steam cranes were truly inovative at that time. Finally, the preliminary design of a particular lifting platform device for people with special needs is proposed in this study.

With the development of remote sensing and images techniques, the oblique aerial photography (OAP), which relies on the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), has become increasingly significant, showing advantages of high efficiency, low cost, and high spatial resolution in various disciplines. The OAP technology provides an efficient method for the acquisition of spatial information, site surveying, and mapping. It can also be applied to improve the scientific process of architectural design and planning. This article, therefore, introduces a methodology using point clouds obtained by the OAP and takes the Mengyuan resort hotel in China as a case to discuss the meaning and possibility of employing the OAP in architectural design. This research process includes five main steps: site investigation, drone route planning, data acquisition, model construction, and the application of 3D models. The design project of the Mengyuan hotel is finally fulfilled based on the built 3D point clouds, which can be a reference for future architectural analysis, planning, and research, combining with multiple spatial and remote sensing methods.

In the framework of the present study, the influence of the elongation degree on the phenomenon of out-of-plane buckling of reinforced concrete walls is examined. The present investigation is mainly analytical but it contains experimental results of 4 test specimens published by the first author in the past. These specimens simulate the extreme boundary edges of structural walls. All columns simulate only the extreme reinforced areas of the walls, in order to study the basic mechanism of the phenomenon. The detailing of the specimens consists of 4 rebars with a diameter of 12 mm for each bar. The geometric dimensions are the same for all specimens. What differentiates the specimens from each other is the degree of tension they have sustained. More specifically, the tensile degrees used are 10, 20, 30, 50%. The loading stages of each specimen for all specimens are as follows: (a) Uniaxial central tensile loading on each test specimen, (b) Uniaxial central compression loading on each specimen till its failure due to buckling or due to an excess of its cross-section compressive strength. The present study focuses on the tensile loading stage only. Extreme tensile strains are also used, e.g., 30 and 50%, to take into account the cases of extreme seismic excitations. First, the experimental results from a previous publication are presented and afterwards they are followed by the numerical investigation of these 4 specimens using an appropriate finite element framework. Useful conclusions are drawn regarding the precision of the experimental tests investigating the influence of the degree of elongation on the phenomenon of transverse buckling. These conclusions are substantiated both experimentally and analytically, since the results of the tensile experiments are compared with the corresponding results of the analytical investigation.

This study evaluates the impact of pedestrian flow through vehicular delays in a proposed DLT intersection located in an urban area with a high vehicular and pedestrian traffic volume. In addition, it evaluates the pedestrian-vehicle conflict points, the effect on the other accesses after the implementation of the displaced left turns, and the consequences of reorganizing pedestrian flow. Three scenarios are evaluated through microsimulation;the existing one, which is a conventional cross-shaped intersection;a proposed DLT intersection with two displaced left turns on adjacent accesses;and a third one, similar to the last one, but with the inclusion of a pedestrian underpass. Results indicate that a proposed conventional DLT increases the vehicle delays of the intersection by 6.0% compared to the existing condition, mainly due to the high volume of pedestrians and the conflicts it generates. However, with the inclusion of a pedestrian underpass, vehicle delays are reduced significantly by up to 34.0%.

The city of Galveston is located by the coast on the Galveston Island in Texas. Despite its flat and narrow land, the island became an important port in the history for thousands of people to enter the country and a significant market for trade and supplied labor to cotton planters. The city gained its architectural characteristics in the late 19th century as it grew to become a city of expanding commercial and shipping center. However, the hurricane of September 8, 1900, which is known as the deadliest natural disaster in North America, devastated the island by killing over six thousand people and destroying about one-third of the buildings. Hurricanes and tropical storms striking the coast along the Gulf of Mexico are known to have caused severe damage. Among the all, Harvey was the last destructive hurricane that affected the Galveston area in 2017. The community is still vulnerable, and in need of resilient design based on sound structures against hurricanes and storms. After the disasters, the economy has been adversely affected as well. The community has been in serious need for the revival to support the economy. The tourism industry of Galveston is based on leisure travel, conventions, and tourism. The city has an invaluable cultural asset. The majority of the cultural heritage is located at the East End Historic District, Silk Stocking National Historic District, Lost Bayou Historic District and Strand/Mechanic Historic District. Among these districts, the Strand hosts a great many number of historic buildings that are still in use today. Most of these buildings were damaged in the 1885 fire and numerous hurricanes and tropical storms. This research presents an investigation of the historical building profile of the Strand District. Historical structures have been investigated via the Rapid Visual Inspection approach. A traffic accident is one of the traffic problems that often occur in Bekasi. Accidents that occurredwere caused by several factors such as human factors, vehicle factors, and road environment factors. One of the efforts that can be done to overcome the traffic accident problems is analyzing black spots on the road and analyzing its causative factors so that we can determine appropriate solutions to overcome this matter. The analysis of black spots on the roads carried out using the Frequency and Equivalent Property Damage Only Method (EPDO). The result of the analysis showed that roads that are considered prone to traffic accidents (black spots) are Jalan Raya Narogong-Siliwangi, Jenderal Achmad Yani, and Sultan Agung. The result of secondary data analysis shows that the causative factors of accidents were caused by 70% of human factors, 22% of vehicle factors, and 8% of road environment factors, whereas the primary data analysis result shows that the causative factors of accidents were caused by the average vehicle's speed that exceeds the speed limit standard and poor road infrastructure conditions.

Digital documentation and 3D modelling find a wide application in the protection, preservation and restoration of Cultural Heritage Monuments. In the current paper, the use of these technologies is demonstrated in the case of the First Ancient Theatre of Larissa, one of the largest and most important theatres in Greece, the restoration of which has been ongoing for more than 20 years. In the NSRF 2014-2020 funded project "Restoration of the first Ancient Theatre of Larissa - Phase E", part of the koilon (cavea) is restored by repositioning 300 ancient marble seats, "edolia", to their original or corresponding positions, and by the addition of 240 new "edolia", according to the approved restoration study. The koilon is documented through 3d laser scanning and photogrammetry methods to produce a three dimensional reconstructed model. Then, an as-designed model of the koilon is created, depicting the curvature, elevation and the new position of both ancient and new "edolia". Separate 3d models are created for each new "edolio" that incorporate all the information needed to produce them on a CNC machine, ensuring the best fit. The paper also presents the implementation of digital documentation in the project's execution where modern technology meets ancient techniques.

With the introduction of the BIM methodology, the digitalization is consolidating mostly the process of new building design defining new standardized working procedures in order to optimize the data flow. On the contrary, pertaining to existing buildings, the rules are still dictated by the traditional methodology leading to fragmented and disaggregated information flow. However, some tools have been recently developed and are quickly upgrading to meet the specific aim to pursue progress, dynamism and experimentation in order to stay in tune with market demands. One common issue, is due to the fact that the documents are paper, hard to find and numerous so that the digitalization represents the best real solution to improve their management. In this regard, the heart of the informative flow is represented by the Common Data Environment (CDE), a cloud storage in which the documents are collected once uploaded and easily manageable with specific platforms. Byway of example, a case study is developed in the paper in which the management process of the H-BIM of the XV century's structure placed in the old town of Naples is carried out in a digital way, through the *** (released by ACCA software company) using specific tools, like links, markers and tags. The goal of the paper is to define both a new organization for the data archive, in which the documents are structured and easily traceable, both a new way of conceiving the BIM model that it is thought as an informative vehicle and a key access to the information rather than a mere geometric representation.

On 21/7/2017 a strong earthquake with epicentre between the Greek island Kos and the Turkey city Bodrum shook the area. The magnitude of the earthquake was Mw = 6,6 and it caused damage both to build environment and to humans, two people were killed. Older masonry buildings and newer ones of reinforced concrete, as well as roads and the port, developed damage. The Gazi Hasan Pasha mosque, a structure built during the 17th century developed very limited damage during this seismic event. In 1933 an earthquake of the same size had also shaken Kos Island and nevertheless the damage was extensive, the load-bearing walls responded well without cracks or extensive deformations;the mosque developed extensive damage to theminaret and to timbermembers as is the roof and the floor. In this paper both the capacity of the structure under the seismic loads of EN1998-1 as well as the effectiveness of recommended strengthening measures are studied. Two strengthening schemes provided the insertion of steel tendons are proposed. In order to assess the effectiveness of these measures, the assessment was done according to the Greek Code for Interventions to Masonry Structures (KADET) that suggests performance base criteria.

The railway bridge would be vibrating when a series of train passed on it. The movement a train triggers a noise to the bridge structure which is generated by the combination of small-scales undulation between wheel of train, railway and bridge railway contact surfaces. Nowadays, railway researches focused on dynamic behaviour of railway track when the train passed on it. This study discusses the dynamic behaviour of railway bridges vibrations caused by train traffic load in terms of three axis direction (x, y and z direction). A field investigation was conducted by applied a series of accelerometers to find out the value of frequency natural and amplitude. The tools are placed on the beam at a half span and at a third span. The results were compared between passengers train and carriage train. During unloaded condition, the range of frequency natural is 0.78-3.73 Hz and amplitude is in between 1.82 and 1.89. When the train passes by, the range of frequency natural is in between 1.03 and 5.77 Hz and amplitude 1.70-4.
