The paper presents the outcomes of an experimental campaign investigating the in-plane behavior of stone masonry walls reinforced with cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels fixed to the masonry by using steel rods and adhesives. Timber panels are intended to be positioned only on the internal side of the building walls, to preserve the integrity of the external facades and for better durability. The campaign is part of a broader project that already saw testing (from connections to full-scale walls) of clay brick masonry strengthened with timber panels fixed to the masonry by using screw fasteners inserted dry. The research phase presented herein comprised 1) shear testing of timber-masonry connections fixed with epoxy-based resins and 2) in-plane diagonal compression testing of as-built and retrofitted masonry wallets to evaluate the shear capacity of the walls with and without the strengthening.

The investigation discusses the history of construction of the Orthodox Christian architectural complex St Stefan in Constantinople, comprising a steel church and a convent. The paper pays special attention to the third stage of the creating of the complex: the steel structure of prefabricate elements and the ornamented cast-iron cladding manufactured and fitted by the Vienna-based company Rudolph Philipp Waagner in 1896-1898 on a design of Turkish architect Hovsep Aznavur. The church is a monument of cultural heritage of Bulgaria and Turkey. The study is a result of in situ work and of an analysis of unpublished records kept in the Central State Archives in Sofia. The paper deals with some structural features of the church. The application of the steel for structural purposes is an important step in the structural design. The concept of the structure is analyzed and some general conclusions are presented based on the comparison of the church with similar steel structures from this period. Comparisons are made between the St Stefan Church, the steel churches in the other countries as Latvia, the Philippines, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Russia that are a product of the industrial development in the 19th century and now are the rare architectural monuments.

The Historic Wharf is situated at the Port of Lavrio in Attica Greece and was constructed in 1887-1888 It is a technologically advanced Industrial construction, a significant landmark, a listed monument since 1995. The people of Lavrio are very concerned about the degradation of the monument, because they always considered it as a valuable symbol of their recent history and demand it's conservation. The documentation, conservation and reuse project of the wharf was a very difficult and challenging project that needed intensive interdisciplinary collaboration. The geometric documentation was executed using contemporary methods of data acquisition and processing and was part of an interdisciplinary approach concerning historical, architectural, structural and mechanical documentation. The architectural reuse proposal aims to conserve and revitalize the Wharf, reactivating it as a "living" cultural monument open to society. The stone walls and the metal structure will be conserved and other parts will be reconstructed. The circulation of people on the metal part will be restricted to modern corridors, following the rails where the wagons used to circulate. The architectural proposal also emphasises sustainability and viability, proposing changes to the surrounding urban fabric.

The aims of the study are to achieve an understanding of urban morphology and classify essential morphological characteristics, and to measure the degree of urbanity. Chiang Mai's old town and its surrounding radius one-kilometer buffer were used to be the study area. In this study, the analysis of urban morphology properties including street network configuration and the degree of accessibility, density of buildings and open space, and patterns of land use and building, which investigated with tools called space syntax, space-matrix, and mixed-use index, respectively. All three analytical tools were combined through the Geographical Information System (GIS) to classify the morphological characteristics. The characteristic results show that there are quite high degrees of accessibility in the old town and main roads in its buffer. All building types in the old town are low rise, most of them are mixed functions between living and doing small business. The combination results reveal that there are mixed of various degrees of urbanity in the old town;highlyUrban, in-between (high), in-between (middle), low-Urban and suburban. The results of the study can be used to develop strategies and design planning for the old town of Chiang Mai city and applied to be an approach of the urban planning study for other Thailand's cities.

Although monotonic bond tests are available in the literature, limited experimental studies exist for cyclic loading conditions. To fill this gap, this work describes results from cyclic pull-out tests of eleven specimens with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) rebars embedded in high strength concrete (f(ck) > 50 MPa). Six of the samples were sand-coated while the remaining five were ribbed carbon fiber rebars to account for various bond conditions. CFRP rebars were concentrically embedded into U-shaped 350 mm x 350 mm x 300 mm concrete blocks that provided sufficient development lengths. Rebar surfaces and development lengths with multiples of rebar diameters of 5d(b), 10d(b), 15d(b), 20d(b), 25d(b), 30d(b) and 40d(b) were taken as the main parameters in this experimental work. Both tension load versus slip relationships and CFRP bar strain measurements were obtained and presented. In order to observe the distribution of the tensile stresses between the concrete and embedded part of the CFRP bar, three strain gauges were attached on the surface of each bar before pouring the concrete. During the tests, typical bond slip (i.e. debonding) and concrete splitting failures were observed. According to the experimental data obtained in this work, bond strengths were in the range of 7-11 MPa and 9-14 MPa, for the sand-coated and ribbed CFRP bars, respectively. These values indicate that the bond strength obtained for ribbed rebars is considerably higher, and therefore, it is necessary to take into account the change in the bond strength of CFRP rebars embedded in RC elements according to the rebar surface conditions. When the obtained results are compared with current specifications, it is seen that relationships and limitations proposed for the design are not in good agreement with the experimental data obtained in this work. The use of composite FRP pultruded elements in civil constructions is nowadays widely accepted as a valid alternative to classic materials. In the case of emergency applications (as for temporary shelter after earthquakes, floods and all disastrous), the lightness, ease of transport, assembly, safety of use, possibility of disassembly and reuse are key aspects that composite FRP structures can provide easily. This paper presents a design-to-testing-to-production process of a full-scale pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) structure to investigate the structural performances according to the design at ultimate and serviceability limit states by cyclic and monotonic loads up to the failure. The capacity of the composite structure was assessed with respect to instantaneous and time-dependent loading effects. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of a numerical model based on the experimental mechanical characterization of the materials and the substructure such as frame elements and connections. The results indicate that the high performances of the structure provide a very good capacity in view of facing service loads and also in extreme conditions.

Flood is one of the most dangerous disasters in Vietnam, the problem of floods is getting more serious and floods have caused great damage to people and property in the context of climate change. In this study, the methodology emphasizes weighting crucial variables using spatial analyst tools, Analytic Hierarchy Process, and Fuzzy-based Geomatics for flood disaster risk. The Fuzzy contains three input indicators: the hazard factor, the exposure factor, and the vulnerability factor. Hazard factors are obtained using the flooding map was constructed from radar satellite imagery (Sentinel-1). Then, hazard factors, exposure factors, and vulnerability factors are all put into the Geographic Information System (GIS) to accomplish overlay analysis, AHP, and Fuzzy matrix calculation. This methodology has been successfully applied to the flood risk map in the Lai Giang river basin, the South Central Coast, Vietnam. Finally, the weights of these variables on the risk of the flood were assigned as 50% for elevation, 40% for distance from Lai Giang river, 5% for Manning's coefficient, and 5% for population density.

Prestressed (PS) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)-reinforced steel columns are novel multiparameter systems exhibiting complex nonlinear buckling behavior, which was investigated herein with the finite element method (FEM) and an artificial neural network (ANN). First, FEM models of the columns under axial and eccentric compression were built. The numerical and experimental results were in good agreement. Based on the validated FEM model, key parameters (CFRP initial prestressing force and supporting length) were studied, and the influencing rules on the buckling capacity and reinforcing efficiency of the reinforced columns were obtained. Then, 312 data sets from the validated FEM model covering 8 key parameters were generated using non-linear finite element calculation software ANSYS. Finally, as ANNs are good at handling highly complex and nonlinear problems, a practical ANN tool was developed for predicting the buckling capacity of PS CFRP-reinforced steel columns, which gives results with a high accuracy compared with FEM results.

Despite the numerous advantages of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) composites, ductility is still a major problem of these materials. Usual FRP composites are stiff and strong with little or no warning before final failure. The mentioned drawback can be mitigated using unidirectional (UD) hybrid composites (i.e. composites in which two or more different reinforcing materials are combined in the same polymeric matrix). In these materials the development of tensile pseudo-ductile behaviour during the failure process can be achieved. The amount of resin used to manufacture hybrid FRP composites is responsible for significant changes at their tensile stress-strain curve. It is believed that these changes are dependent on the interlaminar fracture toughness of the interface between layers. In the present work, the effect manufacturing methods on the tensile properties of hybrid composites was studied. Hand lay-up and vacuum bagging techniques were compared. Three combinations of dry unidirectional fabric materials were used to produce hybrid FRP composites, namely: i) high-modulus carbon, ii) standard carbon, and iii) E-glass. An epoxy-based resin was used as matrix. Failure modes, tensile elastic modulus, strength, and stress-strain curve were analysed. Finally, experimental results were analytically simulated.

Saxe Street footbridge is a new glass Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) footbridge designed by WSP on behalf of Balfour Beatty on a Design & Build contract with Network Rail. The new FRP footbridge replaces a wrought iron iron footbridge built in 1884 that was suffering from extensive corrosion. The new bridge carries a footpath over the Great Western Railway line in Teignmouth (UK) and consists of a single 12.7 m span simply supported deck made with pultruded FRP modular panels and connections and clad in moulded FRP panels. The design solution combined rapid and safe installation with a considerable reduction in future maintenance requirements that provided economic, operational and sustainability benefits. This paper presents some of the challenges faced during the design stages. These challenges include understanding the effects of the material's behavior on the robustness and serviceability of the structure, together with its effects on the substructure and local site. Site-specific challenges were encountered due to the lightweight nature and low stiffness of the new footbridge, linked to the structure's location over a railway and the stability of the existing substructure. The new and old footbridges are shown in Fig. 1a and Fig. 1b respectively.
