Water with high turbidity can significantly reduce the aesthetic quality of lakes and streams, having a harmful effect on recreation and tourism. Besides, it may harm fish and other aquatic life by reducing food supplies and affecting the function of fish's gill. Turbidity and Total Suspend Solids (TSS) are among the main parameters used in water quality indicators. The objectives of this study are to remove total suspended solid (TSS) concentration and turbidity (NTU) by using Non-Woven Geotextiles (NWG) as a filter media. Other parameters such as BOD, COD, DO, pH and NH3-N were also taken into account to determine the quality of Penchala River in Kuala Lumpur. Performance of NWG was also assessed with Water Quality Index (WQI) calculation. The baseline data showed the TSS value was 150 mg/L (Class III) and the value for turbidity was 154 NTU (highly turbid). NWG properties used are 100% polypropylene materials, with properties design of 190 r m (0.19 mm) AOS, 2.2 mm thickness and permittivity 2S-1. Results showed that the NWG was effectively removed TSS and decreased the NTU level by 70% reduction, therefore, significantly improved the river classification from Class III to Class II. Other parameters that showed improvement was COD, with average percentage improvement of 17.2%. Meanwhile data such as BOD, pH and NH3-N were remained unchanged throughout the study period. As overall, the WQI for Penchala River during prior time of study was in range 83.78-86.70 (Class II) and will be transformed to Class I after continuous treatment with NWG filtration media.

Superstructures such as reinforced concrete bridges, often suffer from exposure to extreme corrosive environments. The corrosion of the reinforcement leads to a decrease of their capacity and their structural performance needs to be upgraded with strengthening measures. Lately, the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) in retrofitting schemes has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper the interface response of adhesively bonded Carbon FRP (CFRP) fabrics applied on concrete substrates is investigated. This paper deals with the study of the integration of CFRP fabrics using different adhesive layers as the composite's matrix, first using a conventional adhesive and next using an enhanced toughened adhesive layer. Two different scenarios of substrate integrity were studied: a) healthy concrete and b) substrate with corrosion products. The bond-slip behavior of the interfaces between concrete and the laminated fabrics was investigated with a modified double shear test configuration. The use of the toughened matrix increases the shear stresses up to 61% in failure, nonetheless in significant lower ratio of strains. The corrosion reduces the maximum shear stresses of the interface up to 20% and the corresponding strains up to 23% in failure. For the scenario were the toughened matrix was used, there is a shift in the response from a pseudo-ductile to linear with a tendency to fully elastic. The crack propagation is depicted in distinct stages. The use of toughened adhesive layers with reduced stiffness shifts the mindset of creating high stiffness retrofitting solutions to achieve high mechanical performance and still ensures an efficient strengthening response.

The paper deals with the analysis of a reinforced concrete shear wall under varying cyclic loading with focus on its global behavior until collapse. The structural shear walls of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant were reported to sustain no significant structural damage during the 2007 Chuetsu earthquake. It was the initial motive to analyze the resistance of the applied shear walls. The IRIS research project on industrial safety assessment and management included the cyclic testing of full-scale reinforced concrete walls. During testing each wall was fixed at the bottom and subjected to a combination of constant vertical load and variably increasing horizontal load applied at the top of the shear wall. The test data have been analyzed. The most important results of testing are the load-displacement curve and diagram of shear displacement vs. cumulative vertical displacement. With help of both diagrams it is possible to identify the steel yielding and the collapse of the wall. The numerical model of the wall was derived, validated and applied in seismic analysis. The results may point towards unaccounted overstrength of RC shear walls.

This paper presents the details of numerical investigations on exterior beam-to-column joint sub-assemblage, using a fuse link connection, under cyclic loading. The fuse link beam-to-column connection is developed to act as structural fuse in the event of strong earthquakes, thereby preventing collapse of buildings to ensure occupant safety and also enables rehabilitation of such buildings after a strong earthquake. The fuse link connection consists of two fuse links, which connect the beam to the column flanges and one standard shear tab, which connects the beam web and column flange. The developed connection confines the inelasticity within the fuse links and limits damage in the primary members, standard shear tab and the connecting bolts. To demonstrate the behaviour of the developed fuse link connection, numerical studies are carried out on exterior fuse link beam-to-column joint sub-assemblages. Numerical model is validated using results of full-scale experimental investigations, with focus on both global and local component's behaviour, to demonstrate the efficiency of developed models. Further, it is demonstrated that the inelastic actions are concentrated only in the fuse links as envisaged at the design stage.

The structural system composed by composite steel-concrete shear walls (CSW) represents one of the recommended solutions for resisting structures placed in seismic areas. The system is able to provide high strength and limited displacements that successfully fulfil the requirements of earthquake resisting structures. The CSCSW are made of one reinforced concrete web panel which has embedded on the edges different types of steel profiles, with the purpose to improve the behaviour of the conventional reinforced concrete structural walls and to solve some technological issues on the boundary regions, such as reinforcement congestion. In practice, the CSCSW, either exterior or interior, need centred or staggered openings along the height of the structure, due to architectural or functional requirements. In the last decade the solution of solid composite walls without openings was investigated but there is a lack of information about the behaviour of such CSCSW with openings. This paper presents the experimental results on the behaviour of composite steel-concrete coupled shear walls with central openings. The specimens have partially embedded steel profiles on the edges and conventionally reinforced couplingbeams. The influence of different composite connections and the performance of the reinforced concrete with steel fibres in the overall seismic behaviour were studied. The failure modes, strength, stiffness and cracking analysis of the tested specimens are discussed herein. From the experimental tests, it was found that the ductility of the walls could significantly be improved if the traditionally reinforced concrete material is replaced by fibre reinforced concrete using hooked steel fibres.

The excellent performance of near-surface mounted (NSM) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) method in enhancing the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams has been proved by abundant experimental studies over the last two decades. However, premature debonding of FRP in NSM FRP flexurally-strengthened RC beams was still frequently observed, which significantly limited the utilization of expensive FRP materials. To delay/suppress debonding failures and further improve the beam performances, the use of FRP U-jackets as the anchoring measure for NSM reinforcement in the strengthened beam is an attractive approach. Although there have been a number of relevant experimental studies, tests on the large-scale RC beams are still very limited. Against this background, an experimental study consisting of 4 large-scale RC beams strengthened with NSM CFRP strips was carried out to investigate the effect of CFRP U-jackets on the flexural behavior of such strengthened beams. Test results show that the CFRP U-jackets arranged at the ends of NSM FRP strip can effectively suppress the end concrete cover separation failure and thus enhance the load and deflection capacities of the NSM FRP strengthened beams.

This paper aims to focus on the participation of community in smart management of neighborhood parks/playgrounds (NPP) in Hanoi. In response to the changing functions and characteristics of public spaces (PS) upon the context of different local communities, this research primarily examines howto smartly manage PS in Hanoi where has been facing increasing challenges of hyper-urbanization. Meanwhile, the term NPP can be referred to as the physical environment and social areas for people, especially elders and children, to relax, exercise and interact. Therefore, it is imperative for NPP to be planned and managed with the participation of local residents who have the best understanding of their needs and expectations, not to mention their interest in improving living standards. Accordingly, this paper began with a review of the reality of NPP management in Hanoi and how participation of community has been taking place. Through a deductive process for the reflection on reality, the paper provided in-depth discussions on the effectiveness of local community involvement in NPP management. Specifically, it came to the conclusion that inclusive stakeholder participation under a strategic partnership can be a key to the success of PS planning and smart management. In an extensive scope, the paper also highlighted how application of digital transformation should be a major driver in NPP management?

A piled embankment is a complex system, consisting of the stratum, the soft soil, the rigid pile, and the load transfer platform. Its behavior is also complex, especially, the arching effect within the load transfer platform and the settlements and the negative skin friction around the pile shaft. The selection of constitutive model for soil is one of the important criteria, it decides the accuracy of the results. In the paper, the influence of constitutive model of embankment on the behavior system is investigated. Two models are considered including the Mohr-Coulomb (MC) model and the CYsoil model. The modified Cam clay model is used for the soft soil. The numerical results compare and evaluate the effectiveness of the two models in simulating the mechanical behavior of a piled embankment in terms of the soil arching effect, the embankment and soft soil settlements and the axial pile force. The numerical results figure out that there is a similarity between the MC and CYsoil numerical results in terms of the arching shape and the stress transmitted to the pile head and the soft soil. The settlement of embankment of MC model is significantly smaller than that of CYsoil model, it is only two-thirds of that of CYsoil model.

A new lightweight floor system was developed to tackle the sustainability issue in the construction sector. The proposed flooring system is suited for rehabilitation of degraded timber floors in existing building. Despite the great potential that sandwich construction shows as load bearing elements their use has been hindered by the high initial cost. Three alternative architectures, all including cold-formed steel (CFS) face sheets, were envisaged, namely i) CFS webs and polyurethane (PUR) foam core system, ii) glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) webs and PUR foam system and iii) outer CFS webs and balsa wood core. The structural, thermal, acoustic and fire resistance requirements were identified in the Portuguese national codes. Particular attention is given to the description of the materials adopted for the different components with respect to the driving factors of the design of the panel, namely weight, cost, environmental impact, load bearing capacity, rigidity, thermal and acoustic properties and fire resistance. The preliminary design of the three sandwich panels is carried out considering the value of the actions established in the Eurocode standards. The final layout and cost estimate are the results of a parametric study aimed at retrieving the lightest and most economical solutions.

Present paper summarises a case study aiming to evaluate the robustness performance of a multi-story steel frame building designed for persistent and seismic design requirements. On this purpose, a reference 6-story steel building with dual inverted V bracing and moment frames was first designed. Then, the robustness performance of the structure was assessed considering extreme events that are deemed credible after an earthquake, i.e., internal gas explosion and localized fire. The structural performances were evaluated using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. Numerical model was calibrated against experimental test data.
