Kannur International Airport Ltd. (KIAL) is a new Greenfield airport project with airside development on an undulating terrain with an average height of 90 m above mean sea level (MSL) and a maximum height of 142 m. To accommodate the desired Runway length and runway end safety area (RESA) at both the ends along the proposed alignment, it resulted in 45.5 million cubic meters in cutting and filling. The insufficient availability of land for the construction of free slope embankment at RESA 07 end resulted in the design and construction of reinforced soil slope (RSS) system with a maximum slope of 65 degrees. An embankment fill of average 70 m height with steep slopes located in high rainfall area is a unique feature of this project. The fill was reinforced with high-strength uniaxial geogrids laid perpendicular to the slope. Weld mesh wrapped with coir mat acted as facia units to protect it against surface failure. Considering high rainfall received on this table top airport site, extensive drainage system was designed for the high embankment fill. Gabion wall up to 9 m height were also designed and constructed along the boundary to accommodate the toe of the RSS fill beside the jeepable track at the base level. The design of RSS fill was done using ReSSA software and verified in PLAXIS 2D modeling. The site won excavated laterite soil was used as the fill material for the construction. Extensive field and laboratory tests were conducted during the construction of RSS system for quality assurance.

Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is adopted globally in the development of toll road infrastructure projects, and in Vietnam, there is no exception. Within this project delivery, to mitigate revenue-based risk, the public sector authority offers a guarantee or subsidy, as a form of the financial agreement, to the private sector concessionaire. The recent literature provides a great deal of study on introducing managerial flexibilities, embedded with Real Options, in such financial agreements. Those financial agreements that reflect how risk-sharing mechanisms between the two parties, the authority and the concessionaire, can be classified into two groups: onesided protection and two-sided protection. One-sided revenue protection provides revenue protections to either party to cope with fluctuating revenue, while two-sided revenue protection combines both minimum revenue guarantee and revenue cap to create a band of revenue that benefits both parties. Each of the above protection scenarios is discussed in independent research. The literature lacks a comprehensive reviewcovering all revenue guarantee options available in PPP toll road projects. This paper thus summaries all existing revenue-related guarantee options available in the worldwide literature and analyses international experiences that provide potentials and valuable lessons for developing road infrastructure in Vietnam.

In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning was applied to evaluate settlement of the ground. Firstly, the database of 1200 images was captured and labeled for three classes of damage levels. Seven CNN architectures were then selected for the transfer learning, in which the highest accuracy of approximately 96.11% for the testing set was observed from the DenseNet121 architecture. Herein, a comparison in terms of accuracy with various optimizers-algorithms for optimizing the loss function in machine learning-have been implemented in the DenseNet121 architecture. The goal of this study is to propose a better architecture with higher accuracy for practical applications in geotechnical engineering using the CNN technique. The results indicated that the DenseNet121 architecture using the Adam optimizer performed the most effectively with accuracies of 97.59%, 95.00%, and 96.11% on training, validation, and testing sets, respectively.

In order to solve existing engineering problems, such as variable and dynamic slope stability issues of railway embankments, limited soil bearing capacity, and post-construction settlement of foundations in fluid-plastic soft soil, etc., the Cement-Fly Ash-Gravel (CFG) rigid pile composite foundation has been used as the main foundation design method. However, due to the lower shear strength and the thixotropy of fluid-plastic soft soil, and the lack of research on pile-soil interaction mechanisms especially for the pile-soil modulus ratio, these will influence the effectiveness of CFG rigid pile foundation design. Therefore, it is crucial and essential to study the anti-shear contribution and the failure mode of CFG rigid piles in the foundation treatment of fluid-plastic soft soil. This paper starts with the finite element analysis of the structural mechanism of single rigid piles in the fluid-plastic soft soil under different working conditions. The results show that the stiffness of the pile body itself, the pile-soil modulus ratio, the shear strength of soil, and the angle between pile and the sliding arc tangent of soil are the main influencing factors of the apparent shear strength (defined as the maximum anti-shear force the pile can provide). Furthermore, with an increase of the angle between the pile and the shear plane, the failure modes of piles will gradually transition from the tensile bending failure to compression bending failure. When the pile-soil modulus ratio is greater than 4000:2, the CFG pile and other rigid piles are not suitable for fluid-plastic soft soil foundation. Considering both safety and economy factors, drainage consolidation treatment should be used to improve the shear strength of fluid-plastic soft soil foundation, then follow with the CFG rigid pile composite foundation treatment. Monitoring and inspection of apartment building facades with the help of thermography aims to identify and evaluate construction defects and their effects on thermal efficiency. The analysis of facade cracks is of great importance in the investigation of construction issues, especially in the rehabilitation processes of buildings. In this paper we studied the thermal rehabilitation efficiency of apartment buildings in Bucharest. The used approach was to compare the facades of insulated with non-insulated ones in two periods of time to identify defects and detailed analysis of thermographs in areas with heat losses. The study focuses on the temperature gradient, temperature variation and distribution, but also on AT value which is a thermographic analysis tool that shows the temperature differences between two components, being a criterion to identify and evaluate defects.

Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) with beam-only-connection provide a ductile behavior and reduce damage of columns when subjected to horizontal shear loads. In this study, the effectiveness SPSW with beam-only-connection on failure modes of three-story shear walls with two different types of beam-to-column connections is numerically investigated. The parametric studies are focused on the web plate slenderness and gap between columns. To achieve this aim, a finite element method for simulation and validation has been calibrated according to the recent experimental investigations. Therefore, two different gaps which were constant in the web plate length are selected. In addition, a solid shear panel is chosen as a reference study to compare the numerical results in terms of failure modes and structural behavior. The numerical results illustrated that the maximum shear strength, initial stiffness and energy-dissipating capacity of computational specimens are affected by changing the web plate slenderness and gap between the columns. Finally, the specimen which has improved the failure modes of shear walls is suggested.

According to current design recommendations in Japan, column joints of steel building structure are required to remain elastic under severe earthquake, even ultimate state of the structure is reached. However, the rules for designing column joint are mainly based on experience, and there is no previous research that focuses on the behaviour of column joints within bidirectional steel moment frame under severe earthquake. This paper conducted numerical analyses with steel moment-resisting frames subjected to bidirectional ground motions to investigate the behaviour and required bending strength of column joints. Firstly, from the analysis results, factors that affecting the maximum bending moment at column joint have been revealed;moreover, the shortages of current design recommendations in Japan have been figured out. Secondly, the effects of column joint yielding on the seismic response of steel moment-resisting frames under bidirectional ground motions are considered, and the required bending strength of column joint has been examined.

Research on the mesoscopic geometrical characteristics of joint surfaces has been a topic of considerable interest. Based on discrete cosine transform theory, this paper presents a novel morphology characterization and reconstruction method to quantitatively analyze the 3D geometrical characteristics of rock joints. The joint surfaces are segmented and transformed into standard grid data sets, which are termed, the discrete time-domain signals. Based on discrete cosine transform algorithm, it is possible to convert discrete time-domain signals into a discrete spectrum. Then, the normalized amplitudes of the spectrum are defined as descriptors, which are found to be applicable to characterize and reconstruct the joint surface. Further, the proposed method is used to analyze 205 measured 3D joint samples, and is validated by comparing the surface of the real rock joint with that of reconstructed surface. The research provides an insight into the rapid random reconstruction of joint surfaces, which is beneficial for field identification of discontinuities and providing virtual test samples for numerical modeling.

Rapidly growing urbanization in developing countries has led to high level of traffic demand and vehicle emissions. Consequently, the rail-based transport system is preferred in growing metropolises as an advanced transport mode, potentially resolving mentioned problems. The huge capital requirement of urban metro projects, however, far exceeds the availability of the state or central government funding. To meet the gap in finance, the public sector has implemented publicprivate partnership (PPP) framework to build the system. This contract form offers valuable benefits, such as access to finance, appropriate risk allocation, and efficient management ability. Nevertheless, international experience in metro plans reveals that the successful application of PPP in this transport mode is significantly challenged by various critical issues. Hence, prior to engaging in PPP urban metro projects, key elements justifying the benefits and possible threats, need to be evaluated. This paper, by reviewing international experience, intensively from emerging markets, and by carrying out an in-depth case study, attempts to clarify key issues, and strategy implications to promote successful PPP mechanism for urban metro system in Vietnam.

The overall goal of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the sustainable logistics system, especially in the context of Vietnam. For this investigation, policy implication for the sustainability of logistics sector in Vietnam will be formulated. The research described in the paper is expected as the first step to a decision support system for enhancing the sustainable economic development focusing on logistics sector in Vietnam.
