Building maintenance planning strategy has always been of capital importance to improve building asset life cycle, and Building Information modelling can improve the efficiency of maintenance processes. The research work under this paper performed a literature review addressing the H-BIM strategy for building maintenance management and planning. Heritage Building Information Modeling H-BIM, is the application of the BIM strategy to the existing building stock, with the aim of creating a method and tools for building information acquisition and management. Actual implementation of H-BIM based strategy for building maintenance management aims at planning and controlling technical maintenance operations, also addressing environmental sustainability. Sustainable building maintenance mainly refers to materials and product re-use. Therefore, in case of existing buildings without cultural value, building maintenance sustainability refers to the Design for Deconstruction problem and H-BIM can be used to improve End of Life sustainability. H-BIM contains all pieces of information available to minimize Construction and Demolition Waste while deconstructing and reusing the building materials in a circular economy perspective. Digital Twin is the virtual replica of a built asset, that can support analysis, control and simulation functions with the objective of creating a Decision Support System for maintenance management. The use of sensor systems distributed within the building will become essential tools in the maintenance process. The owner will always be updated about building functions efficiency, and related maintenance requirements and operations. Even the model of use of the building can be designed and controlled, addressing specific living experiences of the users, the Building-Enabled lifestyle management.

In the past the thermal insulation of buildings was poor and the incidence of the energy losses by transmission on the overall energy balance of the built environment was high. Therefore, the building envelope was considered a key element to provide adequate comfort levels and energy performance. In order to tackle the issue related to the energy losses, the properties of the building envelope that have been typically pursued were those of "separation", "insulation", "tightness" and "waterproofing". From the point of view of the technological development, this meant to focus almost completely to the enhancement of the thermal resistance of the components. The benefits deriving from these policies were unquestionably relevant and allowed, especially in their first application phase, to realize more sustainable and healthy buildings and better facades. Nevertheless, in the first decade of the new millennium, the ambitious objectives aimed at achieving nZEB or ZEB buildings demanded an evolution of the traditional constructive habits. This meant to switch from static to dynamic building components, in order to better exploit the opportunities offered by the local climate and by the natural resources. Such innovation was the driving force of the R&D in the last ten years and up to the present. Still today, the main keywords in the field of the research on the building envelopes are: responsivity, adaptability, active response, integration, interactivity, multifunctionality. Remarkable results have been obtained as far as the R&D is concerned and today the major problem, if anything, lies in the massive deployment of these achievements in the real world of constructions (costs, users trust, reliability and construction easiness are still open problems). As part of the SydneyMetro-Western Sydney Airport, Station Boxes and Tunnelling project, there was a need to excavate a circular shaft with a depth of 22 m and a diameter of 29 m. Notably, this shaft also incorporated a rock bench at its base to facilitate construction of four tunnel portals. A temporary retention system to support the shaft excavation comprised (a) Secant piles within the upper 11 m of the shaft. The secant piles were supported with a capping beam at the top and a ring beam at the bottom, (b) Eight piles situated on the sides of the tunnels, extending below the final excavation level to offer additional support to the retention system during tunnelling activities, and (c) Utilization of pattern rock bolts and shotcrete to stabilize the rock between the toe of secant piles and the final excavation level. To enhance stability of the rock bench and facilitate the breakthroughs of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), a pre-support system comprising spiling bar tubes and a shotcrete collar was employed. In the design of the retention system, various aspectswere carefully considered, including loadings from ground, groundwater, and swelling rock, and interfacing with tunnels entering and exiting the shaft. This paper details the components of the retention system employed during shaft excavation and TBM arrival and relaunching activities. It outlines the design process involving finite element analyses to assess structural actions acting on the retention system elements. Finally, the paper discusses the instrumentation and monitoring program implemented to confirm the stability of the system throughout construction.

Climate change is the greatest challenge facing our planet. Heavy overbuilding and the associated sealing of soils in recent decades have limited the availability of green spaces in cities, the fundamental importance of which is now recognised. The urgent need to create more green spaces and areas in the built environment draws attention to nature-based solutions configured as preferred adaptation solutions that enable the built environment to cope with the effects of climate change. The focus of this study is on the impact of climate change on urban areas, which are recognised as a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and a significant proportion of energy consumption. After analysing the concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) with particular reference to green and blue strategies, this study proposes an investigation of the application of NbS in different European cities in order to define a framework that outlines the phases for the implementation of NbS in urban areas and promotes climate adaptation. This framework consists of five phases, ranging from the definition of the challenge to the monitoring of the proposed solutions, to the phases in which the application circuits, the scale of application and the associated measures to be implemented are defined. Although cities are defined as complex systems responsible for high energy consumption, this study highlights the key role of nature-based solutions from an environmental, social, and economic perspective, configured as best practices and preferred solutions to test and outline city-level adaptation strategies whose replicability is essential for orienting urban environments towards a sustainable ecological transition. The inclusion of NbS in planning enables the creation of sustainable cities and communities in line with current European policies to achieve climate neutrality and sustainable development goals.

The process of preparing a technical project for the restoration of a historic building includes mobilizing teams to conduct topographic and architectural surveys, photographic reports, and characterize the construction systems. In the case of buildings of historical interest and in precarious structural conditions, this process becomes more complex and time-consuming. In this context, the Mais Incra Project was developed, an extension project involving university students and professors from the civil engineering course at IFRN, with the objective of developing technical proposals for the use of existing buildings in rural settlements of INCRA, a Federal Agency. The selected buildings were those included in the architectural complex of the former country house of the Barons of Serra Branca, located in Sao Rafael/RN, Brazil, built in 1832, with a total area of 1,783.63 m(2). This article presents the project optimization tool called Digital Twins, which enabled the modeling of the entire building system and improved the accuracy and agility of technical projects. Finally, it presents a comparative structure between modeling with digital twins and traditional technologies. A digital model of the built environment was created using the Matterport platform to generate digital twins, using a 360 degrees camera and its native image processing software. The digital model of the built environment made it possible to reduce the number of field visits and improve the technical reports and projects generated.

Aluminium curtain walls are widely chosen for the facade restoration of historical buildings due to their light weight, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal. However, the high deformability of aluminium alloys can make it challenging to meet code requirements for serviceability under wind- and seismic-induced building sway. This research explores a novel reinforced aluminium curtain wall profile to address these limitations. Previous numerical studies have investigated the use of tensioned steel wires within extruded aluminium profiles to enhance stiffness and strength. Building on this earlier work, the current study presents an experimental investigation of the aluminium curtain wall system with wire reinforcement. Various configurations of the wire reinforcement are tested to identify the optimal arrangement for maximizing stiffness and strength compared to unreinforced aluminium profiles. The experimental results for the reinforced curtain wall system, designed to restore historical building facades, are discussed. Key performance metrics, such as lateral drift control and load-bearing capacity, are evaluated to assess the system's suitability for retrofitting existing structures while preserving architectural heritage. These findings contribute to the development of innovative solutions for the protection and restoration of historical buildings.

Railway subgrades are always subjected to cyclic loading with intermittent rest periods. When railways are built on low permeable soft estuarine clays, excess porewater pressures (EPWP) can accumulate and reach critical levels under prolonged loading conditions. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the clay subgrade under continuous cyclic loading, the behaviour during the rest period has not been studied to a greater extent. Large-scale cyclic consolidation tests conducted in the laboratory, considering two-way drainage, suggest that accumulated EPWP during cyclic loading redistributes during the rest period. Therefore, when adequate rest periods with proper drainage are present, the occurrence of EPWP reaching critical levels can be avoided. This paper presents an analytical model that can predict EPWP accumulation and dissipation. The proposed model is validated using the results of large-scale cyclic consolidation tests.

In order to evaluate a five-storey residential building's seismic study using ETABS, this study compares the seismic requirements of the recently proposed seismic draft code IS1893 (parts 1&2):2023 to the previous Indian and American seismic standards IS1893:2016(part1) and ASCE7-16. The study's conclusions showed that stronger base shear is produced by IS1893:2023(Draft) because of its higher coefficient of base shear. According to Indian standards, base shear in the direction of X and the direction of Y are roughly equal, but less according to American standards. As the storey count increases, the disparity in displacement between the draft code and the currently in use code also rises, It implies the deduction that the current code, IS1893:2016, delivers more displacement efficiency than the proposed code and American code without sacrificing strength and stiffness. It is concluded that IS 1893:2023(Draft) aligns more closely with ASCE7-16 and provides improved seismic provisions when compared to the currently employed standard.

Rapid urbanization have resulted in an increase in the demand for new housing, commercial buildings, and infrastructure projects. This may require getting rid of existing old structures leading to the generation of waste from construction and demolition (C&D) activities. The major part of the generated C&D wastes is typically dumped into landfills posing a severe threat to the environment. Recycled sand derived from C&D wastes can reduce the need for natural sand extracted from rivers beds, beaches, and other natural resources. In the present study, the viability of using recycled sand derived from a C&D waste recycling plant in the construction of road pavements is studied. The strength, deformation, and compaction characteristics of treated recycled sand are studied considering different cement contents (2, 4, and 6%). Based on the gain in the unconfined compressive strength of cement-treated recycled sand, broad guidelines to utilize treated recycled sand in low-volume road construction projects are proposed in the study.

To investigate the impact of motorcade loads on the dynamic responses of the floating bridge, this paper establishes the numerical model of the hinged floating bridge based on the Kane method. The accuracy and rationality of the proposed method are validated by comparing the numerical results with those in the related literature. Furthermore, the numerical model for the elastic hinged floating bridge is developed, and the influence of hinge stiffness on the dynamic responses of the floating bridge is analyzed. Subsequently, the case of motorcade loads passing through the floating bridge is considered, and the impact of load distance on the dynamic responses of the floating bridge is investigated. The study reveals that increasing the hinge stiffness can improve the smoothness of the load traveling through the floating bridge, but it also leads to an increase in the bending moments of the connector. The superposition effect of the loads can be utilized to prevent excessive forces on the floating bridge connectors by choosing an appropriate load distance.
